Don't Break The Chain

Now that I'm finished for college for the summer and have free time to get back into IM in a much bigger capacity I had before, it's time to use this time to create a new habit so that I can get my work done, get paid, and make this a profitable summer.

For this I'm going to use something I read about when I was researching writing jokes, for a Screenwriting class. I remembered hearing that Seinfeld(the show) would often write the end of the joke first then form that point write the episode backwards to get to that point. Interesting, but irrelevant fact. What I stumbled upon was Jerry Seinfeld's advice on productivity, getting better, and creating a new habit.

An up-and-coming comic named Brad Isaac approached Seinfeld once after a show and asked him for advice. Seinfeld said the key to success in comedy is to write better jokes, and to write better jokes you have to write every day. He then explained his method:

1. Buy a year long calendar and get a red marker
2. After completing your chosen daily task mark a big red X on that day
3. After some time you'll have a long unbroken string of X's

Seinfeld then said "Don't break the chain!"

It's cheap to implement, makes you will yourself to be productive, and you'll get better at your task while creating a new and beneficial habit.

There's a web-based app called Streakly designed to help people with this sort of productivity strategy. I'm not affiliated to it in any way, but it might be worth checking out

I am very much agreed with these lines:
    1. Buy a year long calendar and get a red marker.
    2. After completing your chosen daily task mark a big red X on that day.
    3. After some time you'll have a long unbroken string of X's.
These points can help one a lot to do his task daily and they also help to make him happy.

I'm using this method now and have accomplished quite a bit. My chain is still unbroken, but I haven't had any major setbacks or ran into difficult times where it's hard to do my task everyday.

I have my calendar set up on a wall next to my computer so I have to look at it all the time. It's a great way to pressure yourself to get some work done so you don't break the chain.

Putting that X feels good every day

Another thing that helps is doing the activity you're setting to habit during the same time each day. We work off of internal time clocks that we really don't think about, but we subconsciously base our habits around that time clock. Complete consistency will reinforce your new habit quickly and more efficiently.

Definitely well worth doing, it makes things so much easier in the long run and much less likely to procrastinate/put things off

    Great post!

Not only is it a good idea, I can imagine a Seinfeld episode built around it, either George or Kramer!

Has anyone implemented in this strategy yet?

I've got 7 X's now and it's been tough these last few days. I only have to write 1 article a day(something that shouldn't be too hard to do on the surface of things) and so far I've been ok. Some days I write more than one article, but to get that X I have to do at least 1.

I've done 15 articles in 7 days. Not the most amazing thing, but without that calendar I probably would still be working on my first batch of articles.

You say it's not the most amazing thing, but the fact that you are trying something new, and sticking to it, is impressive.

Your comment that you wouldn't have got that many articles done without this technique shows that the idea is impressive too.

Well done and keep it up!

An article a day, every day, during the summer is hard to do. I've got 13 days right now. The goal, for myself, is generally to write something so I'm creating some kind of content I can hopefully use somewhere.

This has been helping me get things out there and in the marketplace and keeps me all kinds of productive. I even wrote an ebook and submitted it to Kindle the same day!

I have a question for those of you that are doing this. What are your solutions if you need to leave to visit family? Circumstances where you have to leave home and be away from your base of operations for awhile.

What are you solutions to staying productive when the travel itself could break the chain(I have a 10 hour drive)?
