Reason #1: Safety
We used to think you get a corporate job, you rise up, you get promoted, maybe you move horizontally to another division or a similar company, you get promoted again, and eventually you retire with enough savings in your IRA.
That's all gone.
That myth disappeared in 2008. It really never existed but now we know it's a myth. Corporate CEOs kept their billion dollar salaries and laid off about 20 million people and sent the jobs to China. Fine, don't complain or blame other people. But your job is not safe.
Reason #2: Home
Everyone thinks they need a safe job so they can save up to buy a home and also qualify for a mortgage. Mortgage lenders at the banks like people who are like them -- other people locked in cubicle prison
Well now you don't need to worry about that. Here's why you should never own a home in the first place. Save yourself the stress.

Reason #3: College
Everyone thinks they need to save up to send their kids to college. Depending on how many kids you have and where you want them to go to college it could cost millions.
Well now we know you don't need to send your kid to college. So you don't need to stress about that money anymore.

Reason #4: Their boss
Most people don't like their boss. It's like any relationship. Most of the time you get into a relationship for the wrong reasons. Eventually you're unhappy. And if you don't get out, you become miserable and scarred for life.

Reason #5: Their coworkers
See above.

Reason #6: Fear
We have such a high unemployment rate, people are afraid if they leave the job they are miserable at, they won't be able to get a job. This is true if you just walk into your boss's office and pee on his desk and get fired. But its not true if you prepare well. More on that in a bit.

Reason #7: The Work
Most people don't like the work they do. They spend 4 years going to college, another few years in graduate school, and then they think they have to use that law degree, business degree, architecture degree and then guess what? They hate it. But they don't want to admit it. They feel guilty. They are in debt. No problem. Read on.

Reason #8: Bad things happen
All the stuff I mention in the post "10 Reasons You Need to Quit Your Job" start to happen. And it gets worse and worse. You don't want to look back at your life and say, "man, those were the worst 45 years of my life." That wouldn't feel good.

Reason #9: The economy is about to boom.
I don't care if you believe this or not. Stop reading the newspaper so much. The newspapers are trying to scare you. Bernanke just printed up a trillion dollars and airlifted it onto the US economy. Who is going to scoop that up. You in your cubicle? Think again.

Reason #10: Your job has clamped your creativity
You do the same thing every day. You want to be jolted, refreshed and rejuvenated.
Note: Some people love their jobs. This is not for them but the 90% who don't.
Henry and Aaron asked a good question: you still need to support yourself, you still need to support your family, you can't just walk into your boss's office and quit.
Good point. You need to prepare. It's like training for the Olympics if you feel now is the time to move on from your job. You need to be physically ready, emotionally (don't quit your job and get divorced on the same day for instance), mentally (get your idea muscle in shape) and spiritual all ready.

    A good bud of mine worked his way through college mowing lawns and doing landscaping. When he got his degree, he found that he could land any number of good jobs making half what he was earning by cutting lawns. He bought a new pickup, hired some other kids who were working their way through school and now has operations in four states. He says college taught him that you are better off working for yourself although you will work harder, have more stress at times, and have less free time. You also reap the rewards instead of your watching your boss get the rewards for your work.



    I could not agree more. I spent over 20 years in Corporate America and grew to hate every minute of every day. You see, most over-educated middle managers and corp staff have a span of control or level of satisfaction in their jobs which is less than a crew chief at McDonalds. I quit in 1999 and have never regretted it ... it freed me from the angst I experienced each day with the pettiness and preverted values of my boss and co-workers. I planned this move for a number of years and finally pulled the trigger ... my only regret was that I had not done so 10 years earlier. One thing that struck me during 9/11 were the millions of pages of paperwork which drifted down from the twin towers. How many hours and needless deadline pressures where placed on preparing these reports ... and in the aftermath ... who really cared ... it was not that important. Think about it!



    I totally applaud you. I really liked my job, but my bosses and the office politics was actually effecting my health. I took a two week vacation just to take a break from the madness. But upon returning I sat down at my desk, and before noon I was shaking. I submitted my resignation that day. Now I work for myself and could not be happier. Starting was tough, but now I doing good. Still learning, but the satisfaction is very worth it.

    Most people won't quit their jobs because of the security of having a paycheck. Honestly, I don't knock that because you do need money to survive. However, there are some circumstances that require immediate action. Such as, if a job is affecting your health or you've got a bully for a boss.

    Also, you should have an exit strategy if going into business is a goal. It is very difficult to run a business and work full-time; I know, I've tried it. Sometimes, you just have to go for taking the risk.

      I agree! A list like this sounds good, but the practicality of each person's situation must determine whether they can quit their job or not. There are too many people out of work and just waiting for a job to open up for anyone to quit their job without spending much time first thinking and planning before they make their decision.

      Each individual needs to do what is the best for them at this time in their life. I've seen people quit their jobs for the wrong reasons and suffer because of it.

        Its easy for us to say, because most if not all of here, are of the entrepreneurial mindset. I think it comes natural for most of us. Many of us can probably look back to when we were kids and see that in our spirit. That we were freethinkers and like to challenge prevailing wisdom even in our childhood. However for many if not most others they weren't not born with it and many have been completely brain washed by a society in which the expectation is going to college or learning a trade then getting JOB is highly promoted from the time we are children. For most people going to their job is robotic and easy, although the work may not be easy in and of itself, the structure is, 8-5 M-F lunch at noon, go home not worry about anything because tomorrow will be the same. They need to be given direction they need to have structure or so they think. Which is really good however that we have both types of people, its what makes society work. If everyone was an entrepreneur we have no one to work for us, if we were all worker bees we'd have none to create and guide us.

    What people should do is build a home based business on the side if they are afraid of just leaving that job and jumping into working for themselves immediately.

    Well, I suggest that, if want to quit the job, make sure that one side of your income stream is steady and another side which looks unbalance to you, you can quit anytime, but for both side which not stable, just hold as long as you can and the time always come when there is balance stream of income flow into your pocket consistently. HAHA ~

    Thanks for the share. This guy has some entertaining blog posts, but that's exactly what it is, entertainment. Whether you strongly agree or strongly disagree on his viewpoints, I think you need to consider the source. This is guy who advocates going to India and getting dysentery in one of his posts.
