WHAT IS THE #1 BARRIER TO SUCCESS?

Is it not having a list?

Not building your own product?

Not mastering traffic generation?

A lack of money? or resources?

Not having the right connections?

Not finding the winning strategy? The magic button? The secret the gurus are keeping from you?

NO.

The #1 barrier to Internet Marketing success is -

LACK OF EXECUTION.

I'm not talking about GETTING IT DONE, once.

I'm talking about a CULTURE of GETTING IT DONE.

Getting it done, on a consistent basis.

In particular - finding the perseverance to move forward when roadblocks and disappointments loom...

When failure and public humiliation snap at your heels...

When disappointment and even despair threaten.

Finding a way to KEEP MOVING FORWARD

and to stay focused

Is invaluable.

I've learned this from my own Internet Marketing journey over the years...
And seen it with many friends and peers all over the Net.

The easiest thing when we find a hot new strategy, try it out, and hit a roadblock, or a failpoint, is to throw in the towel.

We either write off that strategy..

Or, even worse, we write off ourselves.

But the dirty little secret is that the most successful people don't succeed a higher percentage of the time than we do.

They just have more swings at the ball.

And when they fail, which is often, they study and tweak (rather than switch sports, or retire.)

So many of the success stories we admire, in any industry (not just I.M.) are folks who experienced devastating failure.

Do you know the Walt Disney story? His first big cartoon character was a rabbit named Oswald. That was stolen from him at the height of its success.

What about Colonel Sanders, of Kentucky Fried Chicken? In his mid-60s.
He was turned over ONE THOUSAND TIMES, before someone finally gave his chicken recipe a shot.

1,000 times failing at the same project... with the same overall strategy.

Crazy.

And forget about Thomas Edison. Over TEN THOUSAND FAILED EXPERIMENTS... on his path to becoming the most celebrated inventor in the world.

Kinda puts our own challenges on this Internet Marketing journey, in perspective.

I know I've experienced more failure than I would CHOOSE to experience... ha ha!

But each time it happens, I can choose to grow from the experience, or become deflated by it.

I won't lie - the deflation still happens...

But less so than it did at the beginning of my journey.

WHAT PREVENTS US FROM EXECUTING CONSISTENTLY?

FOR ME, IT WAS PROCRASTINATION.

I struggled with procrastination for many years.

The fear of failure would often cripple me.

I loved the beginning part of projects. So starting was never a problem for me.

But getting a project across the finish line definitely was. Too often, I would put a project on the backburner when I hit a roadblock that I couldn't figure out.

Eventually, I decided to focus on figuring out how to solve my problem.

These days, I'm doing a LOT BETTER with consistent execution.

I've learned (the hard way... ha ha!) that:
-There's no magic strategy that will get me to success...
-There's no short cut that will get me to success...

GETTING IT DONE is the KILLER APP
and PROCRASTINATION is often it's biggest barrier.

I'd love to hear your take on what your biggest barrier to success on your journey is.

Thanks.

Bolaji.

My biggest barrier to success is the starting push to get the ball rolling.
Once everything starts to grow there is no going back but you can never achieve anything if you always put it off till tomorrow.

That's a great point, Sun64. Thanks for sharing.

I've been talking to a LOT of people about their barriers to achieving results.
SOme people get stuck at the GETTING STARTED phase.
But once they actually get the ball rolling, like you, there's no turning back.

Others love to get projects started. They can start projects all day.
But after they hit one or two roadblocks that they don't know how to solve, they get tempted to start another project. (This was my pattern.)

Regardless of what our bad habit is...
the good news is that there are thousands upon thousands of people, in our niche, just like us. And they are doing well despite that bad habit.

We too, can harness our strengths, and manage our weaknesses.
If we put focus on them.

      Thanks for commenting.

My biggest barrier has been patience. I see a lot of threads that say, "I ranked on the first page of Google in x days". This can be discouraging, because it has taken me months and I am still not even within the first 25 pages.

I have to continually remind myself that it takes patience to be in internet marketing.

    Exactly,

Execution and action is THE #1 BARRIER in online business and marketing.

    The cure?

-Pick one guru that's established, successful and teaches you how to build a great business...pick only one product that teaches you how to build an online business and/or make money in online marketing then execute it.

-This will produce more results than dissecting 5 products by the top 10 gurus in the world....

Pick someone to teach you, pick a product you're comfy with and rock out.

My favorites are Eben Pagan, Frank Kern, Ryan Deiss, Jeff Walker and Kevin Wilke. Pick one product that teaches you a WAY TO MAKE MONEY and then execute it and you'll make money

For me, I think my biggest barrier to IM success is the fear of failure and therefore, not taking CONSISTENT ACTION to get to the money making part.

It is good to learn how to do something but you have to implement what you are learning until you see the money coming in. Even if you don't make a whole lot of money at first, the experience is invaluable.

You don't have to do everything all at once because Internet Marketing is such a big beast but if you take consistent "money making" action then eventually you will start seeing the money coming in. Once that happens you will have the motivation factor kicking in and you will be on your way.

Working in the Internet Marketing industry is like eating a large elephant. "How do you eat an elephant? Once bite at a time."

I got the above quote from Travis Sago. The creator of the "Bum Marketing Method".

I just posted this quote because I saw a reference to my favorite philosophy (Buddhism) above.. But I'll repost the quote here as it is the simple answer to everything complex.

"There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth. Not going all the way, and not starting." Buddha

Please understand the simplicity; now understand the complexity. What is truth? Here our truth is possibly success. One must start the road to success before one can attain it's fruits. Not all roads to success are the same. What one must realize is that the truth is unique to the individual and what works for someone else may not work for you. This is a frustration commonly found when asking why a strategy failed for you when it worked for another.

What's up, fellow Warriors (and Productivity/Procrastination Afficionados).

I've been thinking a LOT about how to beat procrastination, how to focus, how to conquer info overload, etc. I was part of an Article Marketing challenge sponsored by Dr. Mani 2 years ago. The challenge was to write 25 articles in 30 days. I hadn't written a single article up until that point. But I completed teh challenge successfully. I've been HUGE fan of challenges since then.

Well, I'm playing around with my own first challenge!

It's a simple 7-day challenge. Here's the YouTube vid promoting it.
Let me know what you think! (100% free, btw.)

I think my biggest barrier is my lack of knowledge. I am learning right now and I do not have a lot of money to invest (probably $50 or less) and there is just so much information and so many people who claim to know everything and you want to listen and believe everyone but it is hard to know what is right and not so right.

      Whatup, shaynjordan!

You are in an enviable position, as a newbie. You don't have all the knowledge you need yet... but you also haven't (I'm assuming) wasted a boatload of money on all the hyped up products and promises.

It is by far the most difficult challenge with our market - HYPE MARKETING.

      The thing is this:
      - Many of the marketers who promise the world, the silver bullet, the easy button, are using sleight-of-hand, smoke-and-mirrors.

      - Others are quite honest, despite using hyperbole that is designed to inspire excitement, scarcity, social proof, and ultimately, sales. It's lie someone using very convincing language to tell you how delicious broccoli is. It's good for you, but comparing it to chocolate? Come on.

Even with the products from honest marketers though, it is likely that 90% of those products won't be right for you AT THE TIME.

One of the lessons most experienced Internet Marketers all learn, is to only buy tools and products WHEN you need them. Not buying them with plans to use them in the future.

It is also a mistake to deviate from your plans, and use a good-looking tool.

Your $50 budget is more than adequate. Don't even look to spend $1, until you have a goal and a plan of attack that you're willing to stick with for 3-6 months.

      Honestly.

There are a million ways to make money online. Therein lies the challenge.
Those who are successful pick one... implement... fail, learn from the failure, tweak, implement again, fail less, learn from the failure, tweak, implement again... (repeat until success).

THAT IS THE (most reliable) FORMULA FOR SUCCESS.

1: Do you have a mentor?
2: A group of peers journeying with you (mastermind group, meetup group, etc)?
3: Do you have a system to keep you accountable to taking daily action?
4: Do you have a specific plan?

These are 4 areas for you to focus on as a newbie.

For #3 above, feel free to check out the accountability event (100% free) I'm hosting:

#1 The lack of knowledge...I disagree...but you must find the right person to follow and learn from...there are a lot of people here and elsewhere that can and will teach you the right path to success...

      BUT...

#2 You are totally right on this one...WHO TO BELIEVE...and who not to...there are a ton of crappy fly by night marketers out there promising the key to the money machine, when in reality they probably made a few bucks selling peanuts or bought someones else product and re-hashed it to suit their needs...and sell it as their own...who knows why...there are a thousand reasons...

My point is to watch out for those people because they lurk everywhere these days, waiting to scam you out of a few bucks here and there...

What I suggest is to listen to what others are talking about and who they are talking about and follow that person...learn from them and CONCENTRATE on their techniques...if they are successful then you can also be successful...

Heck, ask your online marketing friends who is for real and who is not...you will get your answer very quickly that way...well most of the time...

Be patient and focus...success takes a little work but worth it in the long run...

      Enough of my ramblings...

      Peace...

      ~Sam

      LOL! I LOVE that quote!
      Nice one, JingQuimPo.

Procrastination has been my #1 barrier in the past.
      Not anymore.
But I don't believe I've BEATEN procrastination for good. I have simply set up systems that force me to not procrastinate.

My most effective system? Paying my best friend as my accountability coach.
We talk for 15 minutes every day.
I report what I'm going to get done for the day, and I get held accountable.
Being accountable to someone else is almost like having a boss. Except its a peer. (So I skip all the boss drama. LOL!)

I have other systems as well, like a time-boxing software tool, that gives me a hard deadline for each item I have to do, on the day. It forces me to get stuff done in a much shorter time. (Deadlines work!!)

I've enjoyed my increased productivity over the past 6 months so much, that I'm trying to build tools to help others get the same sort of productivity improvements.

http://www.Nocrastinator.com/7days is my attempt to use the Wordpress plugin Contest Burner, to facilitate a free 7-day productivity challenge. We'll see how it goes! (First time doing it.)

I agree with a couple of points - you can only succeed if you take action instead of spending all your time reading about what you need to do to succeed.

The other thing is if find you are heading in the wrong direction you must find someone or some way to get yourself going in the right direction.

I've been blessed during the past year to find several good people to follow - one in particular is active on this forum. They have given me direction and focus, and now I'm finally getting the big picture. Now that I'm heading in the right direction, thanks to their guidance, I just need to keep moving forward (by taking action).

True indeed, Edie47 - finding a trusted mentor saves one a LOT of wasted tears and misery! LOL!

Emphasis is on "trusted", of course. Sounds like you have that - and you're very fortunate.

The mentors I've found most valuable (don't have personal relationships with them) include:
      - Lee McIntyre
      - Alex Jeffreys

I have a personal relationship with another successful Internet Marketer, who took me under her wing last year. She's an amazing family woman, and has taught me a LOT about the biz. I got fortunate to have her "adopt" me as a mentee!

I'm looking to help others now, with the stuff I've learned. Each 1, teach 1. There's room for all of us to grow.

        Hello,
I am a newbie too. I am working hard as a freelance data-entry operator/administrative supporter in renowned site to invest on IM. Its very hard to earn there as i m not skilled at any special area (i get .70$-1.5$/hour).

All i know about IM is its a good-profitable thing if done with patience and hard work.

Right now I want to learn- how to learn this field and how to choose a way to go with. How can find a mentor?

You said you are looking to help others now.

It would be great if u suggest something. I am so lost .

And i am planning to invest the precious 37$ on war room. I read about it many times.

        Can anyone ""help"" me??

          What's up, street shower?

Sorry for the late response, my friend!

I understand your frustration. But don't worry - where there is determination, there is hope. I've learned of more and more Internet Marketing experts / mentors / "gurus" (not crazy about that last word) that started as auto mechanics, train operators, and other jobs that seemingly have nothing to do with Internet marketing.

If they can succeed, you and I can succeed.

          It takes focus,

          it takes a stubborn determination,

          and it takes persistence.

          Do you have those ingredients?

Or are you willing to strengthen in those areas?

If you can do that, your (eventual) success will not be denied.

I would recommend not yet investing in anything. There are so many good and worthwhile investments. But spending on tools before you're ready to use them is largely a waste of time. And diverts money from the more appropriate tools.

Where are you now in your journey?

Based on what you've studied in Internet Marketing so far, what interests you?

          Bolaji O.

Yes - DETERMINATION is a good way of putting it.

              Determination ...
              Perseverance ...
              Persistence ...
The ability to KEEP GOING after you fall down, get put down, get held down, get turned down...

All of these will lead to a lack of EXECUTION. Unless you are really strong-willed, and/or have a good support system to help you keep you chin up.

Zara Marie, what's your personal story of determination?

The biggest barrier to success is your thinking. Everything starts with a thought. You live your entire life in the confines of your mind.

Are you impatient? That's a product of your thinking.

Are you lazy? That's a product of your thinking.

Are you careless? Do you fear failure? Do you procrastinate? Do you lack confidence?

All these are products of your thinking.

Change your thinking and you change your world.

      LOL! Indeed, Alfredo!

As you'll see in my signature, I've struggled with procrastination since I was a kid!
      Ha ha!

My parents had to bail me out TIME AND TIME AGAIN, after I missed college application deadlines (before college), college room and board (housing) applications (during college), etc. etc.!

      I WAS A MESS!

I realized after many years of guilt, shame, self-doubt, and lowered self esteem that trying to WILL myself to have discipline and strong will was like a kid trying to will himself to be able to pilot a 747 plane!

You have to start small. Put training wheels on the bike first. Grow from there. As your muscles and skills grow, upgrade your systems. But systems to help you achieve even as your ability improves are the way to go.

What do you know about procrastination though, Anthony?

I quite believe that the major barrier to success is lack of vision which brings about lack of purpose, indecision, procrastination, and laziness. We are enjoined in the book of proverbs 6 to learn from the way of the ants. Can you imagin, that God wants us to learn from that tiny creature? That tiny thing is simply an embodiment of industry and vision.

Exactly! So many people live in their heads and never get anything done because they suffer from paralysis by analysis and the fear of failure.

If you want to succeed just do something - do anything, whether it's wrong or right, just take action!

      Whatup, jcruz:

Hey, don't beat yourself up too badly. The truth is, MOST OF US are either in your position, or have been in the past.

The thing is - we're all disciplined at some things... and not so disciplined at others.

Some of us are very disciplined about not missing our favorite TV show every week...
Others are very disciplined about working out...
Others love programing so much, they spend way too much time doing it (and get really good as a result)
      and so on.

You're actually WAY ahead of most people, in recognizing that you have some work to do on yourself. Or more specifically, your habits. (I think you are just fine - you just have some good habits to gain).

I've found that willpower often lets one down, in areas where we are not naturally strong.
We see others doing it with ease, and feel that we should be able to do the same (since they can).

When this doesn't happen, we end up feeling bad, feeling guilty, and losing confidence. Which makes the task even more difficult, more unattractive, and less likely to be completed.

The breakthrough I had in recent years (after being a lifelong procrastinator) was to rely on external systems... not internal will power.

      Things like:
1 - Having an accountability buddy to check in with every day for 15 minutes...

2 - Ditching my endless to-do list, in favor of identifying the 3 most important things to be completed each day (and only doing those) (80/20 rule)...

3 - Hyper-Focusing for short periods of time, by using a timer...

4 - Using public accountability to create real consequences for my not meeting deadlines...

      and so on.

In the past year, I've gotten closer in real life to the person I see in my head.
My accomplishments are moving closer to my aspirations.

Not because I've built more willpower....
Not because I'm no longer prone to procrastination...
But because I've surrounded myself with systems (training wheels) to keep me on the straight-and-narrow.

You can do the same, jcruz.

I am absolutely positive about that.

Discipline will come... willpower will (eventually) get stronger...
but you have to start with training wheels on your bike, when it comes to GETTING THINGS DONE.
Rather than watching the guys and girls driving the Ferrari's of Getting Things Done, and getting down on ourselves...

We should happily ride our training wheel bicycles on the sidewalk
And wave as the Ferrari's go by.

The other kids on the sidewalk may laugh,
But those kids are staying in the same neighborhood, doing the same time-wasting things
While we are slowly, slowly, moving on up.

I got your back. Let me know how I can help.
