Motivation... Most people do not act until they have to.

Well, what I feel is not only stopping me, but utterly destroying my (so far mediocre ) efforts is: Internet Distractions.

I don't use Facebook, the greatest time-waster of all times. But even then I find myself spending the bulk of my day watching Youtube videos, looking pictures at Deviantart, looking for Magic The Gathering cards in the Gatherer... overall doing stuff that doesn't help me in IM. And each day I look back... and think "Man, how much could I've done today if I didn't wasted my time doing X, Y and Z?"

If I had such a strong will to not engage in these distractions until I "break free"... I could be advancing faster at least... but the instant gratification that Internet Entertainment provides is a powerful beast; as powerful as the pleasure that alcohol and cigarettes provide, I believe.

Does anybody else struggle with Internet Entertainment or is it just me??

My personal view is information overload do distract us from focusing on the tasks on-hand. As the saying goes, the more you know, the more you know you don't know!

    Cheers.

    Time, money, resources, patience, knowledge...

Probably a mix of those, I'm guessing.

I think it might be the reluctance to move out of your comfort zone to take risks.

Sometimes, we fail in our ventures, and we prefer to just lay there instead of getting up and about again.

Not making the moves I need to keep going full-bore each day. Such as, limiting my hours spent per day and getting enough time off and sleep. This results in lower energy and despite working more hours yields lower results over all. Which is confirmed via extensive spreadsheeting and analysis of my time and results.

I'd recommend putting something about this in your e-book. At first it's hard to get going, then it's hard to hold yourself back. Be ready for both.

  • Thanks guys, I really appreciate your feedback and your honesty.

It seems like the common causes are distraction, the main culprit of distractions being the internet, the place were we do or intend to do business, lack of focus, information overload and motivation.

All of which makes it pretty damn difficult when your starting. When I first started out, I had no idea of where to start, do I start learning about list building, learning about traffic etc. Still somehow managed to make some money.

The main purpose of my eBook, is show how to adopt the right mindset, cause if you don't make the internal changes, its frinking damn difficult to get started and to stay on track.

Does anyone find other people hold you back?

I would agree people can hold you back. Mostly those that do not understand the power of the Internet and think it is all about Facebook and playing games.
But I also think that the online experience can be overwhelming for many. There is so much going on at once it is hard to ignore the "need" to learn everything before getting started.

I hope that is helpful information for you.

My last corporate job trained me in exactly what to do and in what order to do it. I was in an office and held accountable by a boss. Ultimately, that job transitioned to a telecommuting job, but I still knew what to do, when to do it and was accountable to a boss.

Then, I bought a brick and mortar business that required me to work about 1/2 time at the facility and 1/2 time from home doing the behind the scenes things that business ownership required (accounting, billings, etc.). The business was a going concern when I bought it, so I learned, basically, what to do and when to do it. I was then accountable to my family, me, my employees and my customers.

We sold that business and I opened my own business doing the same work I had done as a telecommuter for my corporate job. I knew what to do, when to do it and I had experience being accountable to my family, me and my customers (no employees in this biz). By the first month, I was earning a comparable income to what I had been earning in the corporate job, which was more than we had been making in the brick and mortar biz.

In those jobs and businesses, I knew what needed to be done and how and when to do it.

Now that I am working online in IM, I find that I DON'T know what to do or when to do it. I haven't built a list, yet, so I don't have customers to be accountable to. My wife, God bless her, has been INCREDIBLY patient with my lack of significant income, so far. (I'm surprised she hasn't said, "You're fired! Go get a JOB!")

I have six (seven if you include silly stuff like Turk) different IM things started or starting that are up on my white board with (what I think are) next steps for each of them. But, I'm so insecure on those steps and I don't have anyone to assure me or guide me. It all seems so...I don't know...like I've been blindfolded, spun around and handed the tail to pin on the donkey in a really large, silent room without a clue where the walls are, much less the donkey! LOL! (Hmmm, never really described it that way before. I hope you're familiar with the kid's game!)

So, I guess that for me, it's a huge matter of confidence - or lack thereof - in knowing what to do, when to do it and that it really will work.

I think it's location, language, idea, investment, lack of good mentors, lack of internet technical and marketing know-how, and then other personal factors such as belief, motivation and focus.

In my experience, that would be:

    1. Motivation or keeping myself motivated for long periods of time
    2. Mindset
    3. Lack of focus
    4. Too many ideas to be pursued
    5. Too much conflicting info on the internet (which leads to confusion)
    6. Time management
    7. Getting things done (things related to your online biz)
    8. Finding a reliable source of info
    9. Taking action with what I've learned (too much time spent on learning/studying)

For me people have been a great hindrance, unfortunately they are people really close but who believe IM does not work, secondly procrastination, and the internet, at times getting so distracted from what I should be doing to advance my IM.

Hey there friend! To be frankly speaking, all of the above points that were being mentioned from other warrior members are definitely correct. Procrastination, lack of motivation and focus, mindset, too many ideas to be pursued and etc. Having one of these issues will cause you hard to goes smoothly in the IM world. It's going to delay you and making you further from being success in the IM world.

In my opinion, MINDSET plays the most important role of all that will decide whether you will success or fail to continue in the IM world. What kind of mindset that will makes you procrastinate or causing you lack of motivation or focus and etc? For me, I think the word "FEAR" will be the biggest cause of all. Do we procrastinate if we certainty know that the thing we are doing now worth a MILLION DOLLAR in the next second? I don't think someone would stupidly answer me "SURE I WILL". The moment we procrastinate it's because we FEAR with the thing we are doing right now won't bring us great result instantly but it needs a lot of time to build up.

And what's the cause of lack of motivation and focus from being success in IM?? I would assume it is "FEAR" too that makes us lack of motivation and focus. When we are fear in what we are doing won't bring us any great results soon enough, we get skeptical in whatever choice we make and that's the moment when you lose your focus. And once you lose your focus you get no motivation from what you are doing.

In example, when we buy a product from a famous product creator to learn about IM, we get so motivated at first and we learn all the things and put it into use. After we create our own product, and the results didn't turn out great and didn't bring much income, we start to FEAR whether the other products that we are going to buy in the future will end up the same way or not. we start losing motivation and can't focus on what we are doing and that's the moment we are getting further from success in the IM world.

It's just a little opinion of mine. I hope this help my friend! =) have a great day guys! =)

PS: Sorry cause of my horrible English, because English is not my mother tongue. lol
