Better to set Mid Year Resolutions than New Year ones?

Hi All,
As June 1st appears, I think it's much better to use this date to set resolutions rather than January 1st.

New Year resolutions have a jokey connotation to them, no-one believes them, and crucially that includes the person making them!

Lack of belief leads to lack of action or lack of persistence, leads to the failure joked about.

Setting them 6 months later is totally different - it allows you to be totally focused and serious, to do it properly without any negative attachments.

Agree?

Disagree, if people think that new years resolutions are a joke then they will certainly think that half year resolutions are jokes.

But that's the whole point, they won't precisely because they *aren't* at New Year.
It's a change in mindset, from doing it jokingly to doing it seriously.

I don't really believe on making resolutions. It's your willingness to do something that tells if you would succeed on doing it or not.

Willingness to do something is not the only ingredient to achieving a goal - not by a long way!
Every goal achieved has a resolution to achieve it as part of the process.

There are smalll goals that we achieve all the time, in those cases the resolution may be unconscious, taken for granted, but it's still there.

The big goals certainly need a resolution, and this thread was less about the need for resolutions, more about how you make them, the atmposphere and mindset of it.

I don't believe in any resolutions. I believe in setting goals and putting a date on it.

Even if you don't reach it, you can still reset it again and again until you reach what ever goal you want.

      A resolution *is* setting goals!

If you believe in setting goals, then surely you agree it's important to do it with a mindset of taking it seriously rather than jokingly?
That's my point about New Year Resolutions.

      Cheers,

What I do and works well for me is setting a new goal for each year of my life rather than each calendar year. Psychologically I end up owning it more and being more committed to making it happen that way.

That's a great idea, and just the kind of thing I was talking about. You mentioning owning it more and being more committed hits the nail on the head!

There's no need to make resolutions. Just set up your goals, take a deep focus on it and just keep going.

I'm surprised how many replies say 'I don't believe in/use resolutions, I believe in/use goal setting instead'

      It's the same thing!
Either the concept of resolutions is different to how I think it is, or I misphrased my original post.

The whole point of the OP is to do with *how* you set your goals, and the arrival of June 1st is a good point to check if you are doing it properly!

I like to set annual goals in the New Year, usually during the last half of December since things become relatively quiet during that time anyway. Then for mid-year, do an assessment of progress and make any adjustments required. Actually, it's a good idea to monitor progress monthly.

That's excellent news Patrick about your success. You have hit upon another key idea, which is the difference between goal *setting* and goal *achieving*.

Subconsciously you will still have been setting goals as you took action.
Goal achievement always includes goal setting, whether you know it or not, and action is the key.

      Good for you!

      Cheers,

My point was not about the size of the target, but the seriousness of your mindset when you set it. The size of the goal has nothing to do with when you set it.

I disagree. Once I stopped setting goals and targets and just worked is when I experienced my success.

Gringo stop with the subconscious bs and stop pushing it for other people.

If it works for you GREAT we are very happy for you. But there is more than one way to skin a cat.

We are successful people telling others what worked for us, it has nothing to do with you so stop telling us we are wrong.

      Wow.

I'm not telling you you are wrong, I'm sharing *my* opinion on *my* thread. That's how forums work friend. If it has nothing to do with me, then why are you posting on *my* thread.

Simply move on to another one and take your negativity with you thanks. This is a self improvement section.
