Are all Internet Marketers Victims?

So I actually have a day job that I like, and it seems that our corporate leaders have decided to invest heavily in the personal development of staff and creating the correct culture.

It seems that we have the victim mentality where no-one takes responsibility, and the reason why projects don't deliver is always down to some-one else. I mean if it was over budget then it must down to the finance department, and the delay in manufacture was down to the chinese supplier not delivering the raw material to the right time and quality.

Now when I think about this in relationship to internet marketing then it really does become clear why so many people are failing. It really is super easy to take the victim role and blame everyone else rather than the reality that you've chosen the wrong niche, picked the wrong keyword, or bought a **** product on the basis of a slick salespage that plays to your emotions.

So please next time you have a failure take the time to learn from the mistake, and spend time learning how to make sure that it doesn't happen again.

Become a player not a victim

Yeah I totally agree with what you are saying Andrew, You are right.

The problem is, is that some people expect to come on here and make millions in a 3 step know-it-all ten minute guide and they can't even tie their own shoe laces to begin with :p (Just kiddin'.)

I think what some people should realize, is that you can't always get everything right all of the time. One part may be wrong in what they are doing that caused the mistake which halted them from succeeding and if they just step back and correct that mistake it could bring results.

Then who is at fault, you may ask? The person selling the course? Or actually is it the person who bought it, convinced that they would make millions in no time?

I think the best thing someone can do is put their hands up and learn from the mistakes they have made, but you know, it is funny because they are called mistakes and it sounds all bad but they can be very beneficial because, if you are truly determined you won't make the same mistake twice and come out on top.

As a victim, you can't just take responsibility for failures. By that same token, a victim also should not be able to take responsibility for successes, although I'm sure that happens a lot. Successful business owners have pulled away from the victim mentality and realized that they are directly responsible for everything in their lives.

Absolutely. That's the key to every success or failure in life. Take responsibility and learn from it and move on or repeat the cycle over and over again and blame everyone else.

There will always be failures in Internet marketing and it is those that can learn from their mistakes and not give up that will come out winners in the end. many new people come into this business thinking that there is easy money to be made and unfortunately these slick sales pages do not help.

If people only took the time to learn the basics before they jumped in and splashed their cash around on every "get rich overnight product that is promoted". This is a long term business and that is how it should be looked at.

I agree. You have to take responsibility and learn from your mistakes.

I always remind myself that my failures are only failures if I fail to learn from them. This helps me dust off and keep running.

Lol. In my corporate days, we didn't call that "victim mentality"; it was just known as office politics.

Of course, the irony is that most people who have or develop a strong sense of personal responsibility such as your employers are keen to foster, usually end up starting their own businesses.

From all the whiny threads, it might seem like all IMers are victims until you realize that some of them are actually exploiters and abusers. I mean come on, you can't have a victim without a victimizer, right?

Or is there some system for taking turns being the victim and the victimizer that I missed out on.

      Seriously, though...

Norb, you hit it on the head. Most folks need to get their noses bloodied before they start seeing the world as it is, rather than as they would like it to be...

And the rest are all "Give me $27, and I'll tell you."

There's a scene in the movie "The Grifters" where a young con man is badgering an old con man to teach him. The old con man tells the young con man "Okay, I'll give you a lesson. Give me a $20 bill." The young con man does, and the old one stuffs it in his pocket, saying "Come back tomorrow, and I'll teach you some more."

Most of us in the audience smile knowingly and nod.

But to look at the kind of people who get into IM, they keep walking up to the experienced guy and handing him the $20. Every day. Sometimes several times a day. And then they start crying "Why do I still not know what's going on?"

Well, honestly, with con men and salesmen and marketers and product vendors... it's all kind of the same thing. The lesson is that you did not get what you wanted because you were not looking in the right place. You keep saying "it's all rehashed crap," which is sort of like the young con man thinking "but that's the same pocket he put it in last time."

Frank Kern does this thing that amazes people when I point it out. He'll say something like "I don't use a lot of NLP. In fact, I only know one NLP pattern, and I'm not very good with it." And then, for twelve pages, he will HAMMER you with the "presupposition" pattern from NLP, over and over and over again.

Or he'll say "What you have to do is tell people something really obvious they already know, and pretend it's an astounding revelation." And then, after talking about that a little, he'll say "the fact is, people like to buy from people who agree with them" and then talk about how astounding that is. He'll actually USE the word "astounding." He'll actually CALL it a "revelation." And he'll actually say OUT LOUD that "you'd think this would just be obvious."

He'll do everything except hit you on the head with a mallet and yell "I'M DOING WHAT I JUST TOLD YOU ABOUT, NUMBSKULL."

Look at all his marketing lessons. He'll give you a very short lesson about something important... and then he'll walk away from that lesson and let you watch him do it. For several pages. Or minutes, on a video. And the only way you really learn from it is to stop being taken in by his example, and understand that the small lesson was the real one, while the big one is just an example of the small one.

Do you know how I buy products now? It will blow your mind.

I pay for the quality of the sales page. I don't even care what it's selling.

And once I click the buy button, I start analysing the sales funnel. Okay, here's an OTO. Back up, leave, okay there's an exit pop. I stay on the page, there's a downsell. Okay, back up, hit the buy button again. Still getting the OTO; say no... okay, same downsell. Turn it down, see what happens. All right, back up, bookmark the OTO. Open in a new tab.

Sometimes I get through the whole process over $100 lighter in the PayPal account, and I don't even care if I ever download the product. Because I just got $1,000 worth of education in how this marketer builds his sales funnels.

Do you think Kevin Riley or Brian McLeod or Jason Fladlien or Robert Plank would sit down and explain to me how their sales funnel works? Not over three hours for $100. Hell, no. Maybe 20 minutes just because they're flattered I asked. Maybe an hour for $250. Maybe they have a sales funnel product I can buy. But it is one hell of a bargain to just step through the funnel.

I've got three products on my hard drive right now that I haven't even looked at, because I just wanted to see the sales funnel.

But those people who have been fooled 86 times think the sales page and the buy button and the sales funnel and the payment page are the wall between them and their product. They race past all of them, trying to get to the "real" lesson.

    They've missed it.

And before I figured out that this "wall" was what I really needed to be studying, I went back through a boatload of products and looked them over to reverse-engineer what made them good or bad products. Which is where you can start. Take the product you can't sell for crap, and compare it to the product that just flies out the gate. What is different about them? There has to be something. Right?

It took far longer than it should for me to realise the people buying them aren't comparing the bad product to the good one. They don't have the product. And you would be AMAZED how many people hear me say that and nod, slowly, waiting for me to explain.

Look, seriously, if you don't get that the products are still on the other side of the wall when you click the buy button... I can't help you. That has to sink in. Until you hit the buy button, you are just looking at a sales page. That's all. That's what you're using to make your decision. The quality of the product doesn't enter the picture until AFTER you hit the buy button.

Now go back over this post and read it again until you understand what I did here.

    Amazing post, fellas.

Right now there are 2900 people viewing the WSO Section.

    ..... 2900.

I know a some of them are the successful guys, learning new things to see if they can implement a new strategy to scale their current ones or get another source of income.

But a lot of them- (I know because I was there before)- are the guys who just cant get enough about learning the greatest new trick.... but they never implement it.

....the problem is, once you pick up that shiny coin (method) and put it in your pocket for a day or two (a folder on your computer), it loses its shine and you find a new shiny one to check out....

I know my biggest problem, early on, was telling myself (and others) "I'm working X amount of hours every day on my IM stuff and nothing is working.

When, in fact, I was merely playing around. Trying a little bit of this, and ten minutes later, a little bit of that. Getting distracted by websites, chatting on IM, and basically fooling around.

But I had convinced myself that because I was in front of the computer that I was seriously working on building an IM business.

      Pretty dumb, huh?

Luckily, though, I had a few breaks and, miraculously enough, they always followed those periods of time when I really buckled down and got some actual work done.

Imagine that - real results from working... Boggles the mind doesn't it?

So I had to quite bemoaning how hard I was "slaving away" and not getting anywhere; when I was actually just playing around.

Treat it like a business and you'll get results.

Fool yourself into thinking that you're working when you spend 3 hours playing Facebook games, and you'll forever be the victim of circumstances.

And now, I step down from the pulpit because I know I'm preaching to the choir here.

Some great replies here, the more you look at self development and get an understanding of why the people who are at the top of the field are doing it makes you realise they haven't got to the top by accident.

Moral of the story, invest in yourself and realise that it takes hard work and you will have to overcome some big mental hurdles to achieve success.

We can all have a choice of becoming a victim or guide the direction of our destiny. There are two types of people in the world the ones who control their circumstances and the ones circumstances happen to them. If you currently have a problem that needs solving it makes perfect sence to find someone who had the same problem and find out how they solved it instead of panicking and blaming the world and everyone else. I strongly think that everyone needs to seriously take a long and hard look at themselves and ask this question "am I taking ownership of my life"?
