Hi, My Name Is John Durham - Letter to Marketers.

Hi

My name is John Durham. I make my living doing marketing on and offline, and a good one. I want to tell you what I have to work with.

A: Two Eyes.
B: Two Arms
C: Two Legs…
D: An 8th grade education.

If you are missing one of those, then there are people you need to meet here, who can help you see your way to beating those odds.

I know you wont believe this, but that’s all I came with.

Heck, I didn’t even know how to talk, or ecstrapolate thoughts… Learned it all myself by watching others… Isn’t that amazing?

Isn’t it amazing that you did too?

I tried and tried to learn to walk… others made it look so easy…I crawled with all might up to the edge of a table, and busted my head open a few times… But gosh darn it I just wanted to walk so bad…

Then one day I was watching bozo on TV and suddenly I looked and realized that wow, I wasn’t holding the table anymore, I was standing up by myself…

That’s probably how it happened to you too!

That’s how I learned to make my living as a salesman, then a trainer, then a general of a telemarketing Army, to a consultant… to a marketer like I am today…and Im STILL learning things…

Just yesterday I was watching bozo (LOL Bill) and when I wasn’t suspecting it… I looked around and I was standing up without holding the table yet again…

Hell yeah, I probably still have a few falls to take… CUZ NOW I WANNA GO CLIMB THE STAIRS!

For all who get this … pointless rambling… uh…well, I hope you get it!

Okay okay, it needs a point… In songwriting they say “You got me all excited and set me up for the punch, but then you didn’t knock me out”.

What Im trying to tell you is that going from plateau to plateau is about that endless fascination with trying and sticking your nose in places where it doesn’t belong and curiosity… and that thing where “I just gotta walk” …

When you finally were able to do it, it opened up a whole new world.

I guess the point of this, and it may not knock you out is that… “Keep Trying. You are BUILT to get what you want, if you can remember that part of yourself, and if its still worth it to you”.

So am I, and it’s still worth it to me!

You made excellent points here, John. As they say, 'Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained.'

I know alot of people get held up by feelings of fear. This is normal. I have come to the conclusion though that there are at least two types of fear:

    1) an instinctive fear that comes from your gut that is meant to warn you of real and present danger.

    2) a fear of the unknown which is born of being outside established comfort zones. I think we each need to ask ourselves in moments of fear, which one is operating within us. Only then will we know how to proceed. I know that, for myself, with this second fear, if the goal or end result is worth it enough for me, I may need to do it in my own time, but I will do it. I can also say that when I push past this type of fear, when I finally do succeed, whether after one or multiple attempts, it is an exhilaration unlike anything I have felt before. Conquering fears and expanding our comfort zones are empowering and energy-giving for me.

So, in the final analysis, don't let fear stop you. Sometimes it is a warning, but there are times it is just an opportunity to really fly

The expectation of pain if you venture into something you never done before keeps you from achieving anything and almost always ensures that you stay where you are

Think of the times though when you wanted what you wanted badly enough that the cuts and bruises were an after thought... Children go very quickly from pain, and drama to getting their eyes back on the prize... and do they get what they want?

        You tell me.

As Mark Riddle says, we have been trained to not get what we want. It isnt our natural state.
