Almost feel like throwing in the towel, any help?

Hi guys,

I've been on here almost a year now and I have tried a few things. I have done article writing, web design and some site flipping, all of which got me money but nowhere near enough to even live on and it wasn't stable.

I then decided to rethink and follow my skills, and set up a Linux server and decided to offer hosting however it hadn't gone as well as I had hoped, and I'm actually losing money paying for the server now, not had one single customer since I set it up.

I have tried everything to advertise it, I've used PPC, SEO, forum links, blog links, stumbleupon, digg, hosting directories, and even the warrior forum. All I appear to have done is lost money...the annoying thing is, the very next day I see a WSO very similar to the one I posted offering hosting and it has loads of posts and loads of customers, so where did I go wrong? I just feel like I'm being eaten alive here, I got past the WSO buying stage in my first few weeks here...but now I just don't know what to do...

So the question is, do I throw in the towel on this particular venture, and if I do...what next, what will make me a stable income?

Thank you,
Daniel

First, why did you buy a server when you can use a reseller account first to test the waters?

Second, hosting is a very saturated business. To enter this business you gotta have lots of funds (and tricks up your sleeves). Remember 1and1? They offered free 3 year hosting just get the word out there.

But just like the saying, you haven't failed, you just tried a bunch of things that didn't work.

    Hey mate,

I know how you feel. I was there too once and am still learning everyday whilst finding my own unique way of working.

I'd start with affiliate marketing driving traffic via SEO or if you have some money to spend on PPC, you can start seeing results really quick promoting CPA offers.

Send me a PM if you'd like me to recommend you some good courses that you can't really go wrong with if you actually follow through and take real sustained action.

    All the best,

    MW

Have you tried finding the golden keywords and making sites based on them? IM isn't for everyone. You can start a YouTube channel, a blog, make good content and organically attract people that are there for your content and not because google told them to.

Your WSO title says 600+ happy customers?

I guess that's the root cause of your problems my friend.

I have 600+ happy people on the server, just not customers. originally it was a free hosting endeavour. RDH is currently on Adam's Charity Hosting WSO.

Daniel, to make the kind of income you are seeking, you need to change your marketing focus just a bit.

STOP trying to make an income. Instead, discover a group of people with a problem, offer a legitimate solution and market to them. Never market "products".... always market "solutions".... that's what we are all looking for! Good Luck

Hosting is a very difficult niche to break through, simply because of the huge number of competitors. The other WSO probably got a lot of replies simply because the poster was very well know and/or respected on the forums.

As someone else said, it will take a lot of capital to break through in that market.

A simple thing I do is this.

When your front wheels are stuck in and rut and 1st gear wont get you out, and you've tried 2nd gear and third gear too. Stop, put it in reverse then 1st gear again, reverse, 1st, reverse, 1st. Get rocking and you'll eventually climb out of your rut.

On an "awesome advice" scale from 1 to 10--that's an 11. Great post.

    Hey Daniel,

Don't give up and throw in the towel just yet. Every successful entrepreneur will tell you that the breakthrough you're searching for can be right around the corner and all it takes to find it is to keep on searching. If you give up your goal of having a successful and profitable business your goal will keep gnawing away at you until you eventually start over and restart what you never should have stopped in the first place.

Is IM something that you are really passionate about? Or are you just doing it to "make money" and that's it?

I know just how you feel! I am very new to IM. I do not have a degree and am always impressed by the people who have that kind of discipline. I have it now but when I was younger.. not so much!

I am a stay at home wife, kids is married and gone so now it's quiet enough to get it done.
My goal is to make $48,000 in 24 months. I am like a dog with a bone over that number and what I lack in information I make up for with determination. There is no plan B. I sell helmet stickers on Ebay and due to the changes in their operation, I have decided I will have a second stream of income as of the end of this month. Right now for the month of July the goal is $10 a day, August will be $20 and September $30. Again, before I quote Yoda... there's not option for failure. I have also decided that I am not "investing" since I have seen stories on here about newbs who have made it to their goals, I will figure out how to do the same. It may take longer, but if it can be done, I can do it.

So, that's me. I have the time, I have a blog, I have three .com names at my disposal and all I need is a map. I am hoping through WF, I will not get turned around too many times!

I would suggest you take a break and re-think your approach. Your burned out. I'd get out of the Hosting stuff your loosing money on right away. I think this is an exciting time because so much has changed. Google has turned things up-side down with it's new updates. Soo many of the Guru's have had their sites de-indexed and it's kind of a fresh start for everybody. People who hacked their way to the top through spamming backlinks and black-hat tricks have fallen hard. Now is a great time to get back into the game- the playing field has been leveled a bit. Take a break and come back with a new vigor! Get teamed up with some of the more experienced warriors and see what they are doing different these days! The world out-side of internet marketing is just as hard these days to make good money.

Good job making some cash, many people give up way before they even do that. I would say pick one method you have made cash and focus only on that method and find a way to automate and repeat what you did.

Take your time with keyword research and pick the low hanging fruit before you know it you'll have a system setup and a lot of fruit. :p

Keep a log of what you have done and most importantly write your goals down and take action.

80% of brick and mortar businesses fail within the first two years. To be a true succesful entrepuenur you have to have a couple of loses under your belt. Its just how it is, but that doesn't mean you should give up, i think you should do some more research and go back to the drawing board, and try to brainstorm of other methods of producing income online. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket, diversify your internet marketing portfolio and try to figure out other means of producing income.
