my dad is struggling and i want to get him into IM

my dad is the most wonderful man who has always provided for his family, worked long hours in the construction industry, and should be winding down towards retirement. unfortunately, his company has gone bust (construction work has really taken a hit) and he's struggling to pull in clients and get building jobs. he's an extremely proud man and ive casually mentioned that if he tried his hand at IM i'm sure he'd be great at it, but building is all he knows.
i desperately want to be able to repay him for all the years of toil he endured for our benefit, so whats the simplist way to ease him into this line of work? he's not a technophobe, but i think would rather outsource the really tricky stuff... but i'm just wanting to show him (gently and tentatively) that the hours he could put in at home (rather than slogging into london everyday) could reap so much reward.
so how would you ease a proud almost 60 yr old man with no marketing experience into this game??!

    Hi,

you could create a Fiverr.com account for him, and find something that he could do for other people. Since you live near London, and there are a lot of touristy places around there, he could pop a sign in front of the London bridge backdrop for example, to make some extra money.

It wont replace your fathers wage, but it will be a simple way to get him interested in online business.

There is someone there that does something similar to what l previously mentioned that lives in Paris, and he does get business from it!

Then when he gets into the online world a lot more acting as the middleman for other people that offer stuff for $5, is another profitable area, (the internet is a big place and not everyone knows about Fiverr).

A more advanced thing you could also do, is to set up a series of "how to" videos your father could do on Youtube, also a lot of potential to make money from.

    Hope l have helped.

    Shane.

P.S. don't use Fiverr for directing traffic to your business, a dodgy area with iffy results, but everything else that has some positive feedback is worth considering!

funnily enough ive seen those touristy london gigs on fiverr and thought 'hey why didnt i think of that!' i don't think he'd be into holding up signs or doing anything too bonkers - he's a sensible businessman in a suit afterall! - but im sure he could do a video or two actually. he's an excellent guitarist so could teach a few chords or something. thanks for the suggestion.
re your comment on fiverr traffic - do you mean don't hire anyone to do backlinks for you? because weirdly i was looking into doing that...

    Hi,

Maybe you could try and find out what he has a passion for. It could be the construction industry where he has worked for long or it could possibly be something totally different. Based on what he prefers he can then try writing short articles. He could even write short articles based on his experiences in construction.

I am living in a similar world as you are, but with my mom. I did some IM in 2005 with adsense and CB. The traffic wasn't auromated and I was pretty unorganized but I always tried to get my mom involved... Well my mom had some health issues and work had life had gotten a tad complicated and last Thanksgiving she expressed an interest in getting some online income so since January I have been working with my mom with this whole IM thing and it ain't easy.

There will be many comfort barriers to barrel over with just computing in general, this will take some time to address and for me has been a reoccurring problem.

The next issue I had was productivity issues coupled with information overload, if you are going to sign into an autoresponders make sure to use a different email address for those offers or setup some filters with gmail etc.

I would have to say that the most difficult thing which a new IMer will face would be skepticism and the fact it can be easy to get jaded by the whole system. The best way to fix that, in my opinion would be to by a site on flippa which has some traffic 1000-3000 UV a month who has traffic with decent keywords. Throw some adsense, amazon, Clickbank and CPC offers on a wordpress blog and get some revenue coming in, you can start seeing results in the first day, which is a big motivator.

You will also want to make sure that he has a great grasp of keywords and research. Shane Melaugh provides some of the best information and for free, his free keyword research mini course Keyword Research is better than most of everything I have paid for over the years.

I would also recommend him to start ranking for some keywords for his trade locally, that should get some new business his way allow him to get more income with a passion and improve on the new skill of marketing. He should also be getting pumped for ranking on page one for terms that get him business and should help with overall IM morale.

In addition to that I would recommend him to write an ebook on how to get your license, give it away for free create a list and do a local meet up to help study for the exam for a fee.

Keep things focused and don't reach too far too fast, you'll get burned. I really wish you and your dad the best.

        Kindest regards,
        Ray

P.S. Don't forget goal setting and a daily plan of action!

all my best to you and your mom

Glad that you did, it is probably the easiest way to make some money online!

I am not sure about backlinks, haven't tried that? But when you see 50,000 posts on twitter or YouTube, Facebook, etc on Fiverr, then results will be hard to see, and some may not bother, apart from taking your $5.

Another tip is if you are serious about backlinks and want one to two thousand going to one page, for $150 dollars you could try Microworkers.

You can get 5 to 10 cent clicks there for simple tasks, but read the fine print first, there are some tasks they wont do, but they should be able to help you with backlinking.

hi, thanks for that suggestion, i think he'd be good at articles, he would just have to learn to hurry up and get them written because he can be quite the perfectionist! i think he could write a whole book on the building industry in this country, he's done so much.

Too many good people suffering these days.

    But!

I see a huge opportunity for some real DIY step-by-step web site here. He could make some videos how things are done. Mind you these have to be detailed since people are fed up with ehow type of howtos Just thinking.....

    Hi there!

To ease someone into the IM industry is actually quite simple because everyone is IN FACT motivated by MONEY

I think of myself when i first started and had no idea or interest in any techie stuff. But what got me going was the negative reinforcement of being BROKE... and the positive side of how easy it look to make money online

So, i guess watching a video from an IM Guru talking about how he change his life was what got me pulled to the whole idea. Which guru? Well, for me it was Anik Singal. I'm sure you have your own model when it comes to this.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers!

This is awesome once I start making good money online. One of my goals is to help my parents retire earlier than they expected. I hope I can do that very soon. Thank you for this good post. Why not have him work with you a bit and split it?

Depending on the type of construction that your father has experience in you should encourage him to start a DIY blog for homeowners who are looking for simple home repair tips like replacing a garbage disposal, hanging a door etc.

There isn't a lot of competition in the home repair blog arena.

I would reccommend that he starts off with a course that would walk him step by step, holding his hand thru the whole proccess. IM can be overwhelming and can cause information overload. The course i would reccommend is profit storm 5.0, it's very thourough and tells you everything from start to finish. I also heard good things about bring the fresh, great reviews. Just try to find programs that have a solid track record, and tell him to take his time, chunking. Interntet marketing can be very profitable with creativity, but it does have a learning curve. Take your time and it will all sink in, there is no quick fix remember that.

Its really sad what the world is coming too seeing how hard people work their whole lives just to pay their way and support others and be a part of this world and what thanks do they get?

The same hardship maybe in store for many of us in the near future working till we are in our late 70s.

The best advice I can give is for him to set up one website around his intrests and to work on that longterm untill he can see money coming in. In the meantime maybe join fiver and do some gigs.

First I'd like to commend you on looking after your Dad, obviously he did a good job of raising you.

The good news is the world of Internet Marketing is so vast there's is literally something for everyone who has a strong desire.

The number one key is find something he enjoys doing - even if he didn't get paid for it -- and ironically eventually he will.

There's many other gems of advice on this thread advising what to do. So, here's a thread that I suggest you read that advises what not to do. It will protect and steer you away from the many pot holes people fall into when they first get into Internet Marketing.

Don't Get Into Internet Marketing If ...

      Good Luck and God Bless!
