The Longest You've Persisted Toward A Goal Before Succeeding?

What's the longest you've ever persisted toward a goal before finally achieving it? What was the goal and most important, what motivated you or kept you going?

My personal record is buying my first home. From the time I wrote it down to achievment was 6 years.

What kept me going was hating flushing money down the drain with rent money.

What say you?

I started competing in martial arts back in 1985. I didn't win my first world championship until 1999 so that was a long road. My ski instructor certifications were also a long process. There are four different levels of ski instructors in Canada - levels 1-4. After I became a level 1 ski instructor, it took me another 8 years of hard training before I finally passed my level 2 certification.
