The Relevance of Faith

I want your views about the topic of faith. I know it is a very necessary success tip. A lot of people have however given various meanings to it. Some say you must have faith in your self. Others say you must have faith in your work. Some will tell you you must have faith in GOD and His word. Some would even tell you your faith must be in somebody who is more successful than you are.

What is faith and how does it apply to you.

One of my favorite quotes is " If ye have faith nothing shall be impossible unto you", I take that to mean that if one has a belief and knowing from within one's self in the divine power that creates and created everything, this divine power is available to be used in any, all situations of life. So faith to me is my acceptance of a greater power than me, that is my birthright to use, and is within me, and is always there to be used. A success formula I came across once said: faith+action+goals=success.

With all due respect, faith is NOT a "very necessary success tip".

I am not a man of faith, and I have no desire to be. Without getting into a theological debate, faith in the various gods and faith in people and such are two completely different things.

I am fine with goals and action.

I agree completely. I don't think faith is necessary in any part of anyone's life, especially success. So I don't think faith is relevant to success--at all. Unless of course you run a super-church or something!

I hope you haven't closed your mind to the word 'belief', as well as 'faith'?

Would you undertake something that you didn't 'believe' could work? Probably not unless you are a masochist or enjoy self-sabotage?

If you have a goal then you believe it can be achieved. Sorry but that is faith.

            • Faith is an interesting word. As you've already seen it means different things to different people. And causes very emotional reactions.

To me faith means trusting that something is the way you believe it is.

Because faith is a matter of trust, why you trust isn't defined as part of faith. For instance, I have faith God exists. I don't have blind faith. I didn't just decide this was the way it was. I believe it because I think the evidence supports it and it best explains the world.

Atheism requires faith that the people/institutions you believe support your position are accurate. Faith in the evidence you think supports your position.

When we say we have faith in people, we mean we trust them to do something good. When we have faith in ourselves we trust that we'll make something happen.

Action without faith is near impossible and success without faith is totally impossible. Why would do take action on something you didn't trust would come true?

Faith helps us in gethering our selves in a concentrated way.

It helps us boosting our confidance in life.

It shows us the necessity of our creation.

Nothing in this world is created w/o any objective.

              You are absolutely right.

Faith is just believing in something, it's trusting that there will be a positive outcome (whatever that might be for you personally).

And having faith (believing in yourself!) is the most important attitude to succeed in business. You can buy the best Internet Marketing tools (membership sites, ebooks, software, etc.). But it WON'T help you at all if you don't have a positive, supportive inner belief system to make all the tools and your newly gained knowledge work for you.

You will never experience any kind of significant success without it because self-imposed limits (negative beliefs) will ALWAYS sabotage true, long lasting success, no matter what you do - no matter how hard you try!

              Hope this helps.

FAITH: "A strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny".

                In other words...

It's believing something with ABOSULETY ZERO EVIDENCE to support it.

In other words person who has faith is engaging in: stupidity, self-denial and ignorance of FACT.

It's a FACT that you jump of a 50 meter building (no matter who you are), you'll DIE. Because you can prove it with observational results.

But when someone believes in anything (like GOD), that has no observational evidence or proof, they're engaging in: stupidity, self-denial and ignorance of FACT.

                But wait...

A god believer or Santa-clause believer doesn't look at it that way.

They'll come up and/or create all sorts of evidence out of the blue, in order to justify for what they believe is REALLY TRUE.

                For example...

                A Santa-clause believer won't consider FACTS like:

                1) Santa-clause was a concept designed by Coca-Cola in 1880's.

                2) We have never seen a flying reindeer anywhere.

                3) If Santa had to carry present for every child in a typical 3-million people city, that would equate to over 6,000 TONS of presents (considering each present is 200 Grams) with size of a football field. And he's supposed to fit it in his little backpack.

A believer in "Santa-clause" doesn't care about above stated FACTS. They'll STILL discard it and try to justify why Santa still exists.

That's exactly what a GOD believer does. You'll hear "yea but XYZ". And ofcourse the XYZ that follows is their justification for why their belief is STILL TRUE.

See, the older something is, the less questioned it'll be for it's authenticity. Because people subconsciously think "Well if this concept is so old, there's no way it's inaccurate".

This especially applies to religion or God. (Something they create in their minds using power of imagination (thanks for right brain.))

If you took away human ability to imagine or invent a concept, God concept would not exist.

This entire dilemma can be classified under category of faith.

Andre, why are you so filled with hate?

Can you prove there is no God? If not, we could call you stupid for not believing. That would make just as much sense as what you posted.

What are the facts you claim people are ignoring? Until you can prove there is no God, you have no facts. How can we ignore a fact that has not been established?

Here's the truth: You've chosen to put your faith in the nonexistence of God. That is just as much a belief as anyone else has. You cannot prove your belief, so it is no more valid than anyone else's.

I know this is a heated topic and that mixing business with religion is generally a bad idea and that I should mind my pints and quarts - but I do want to point out the burden of proof is on the believer - the non-believer has no responsibility whatsoever because they're not making any claims.

Faith in a proven method is different than faith in a God(s) - and that sort of faith (which I'd actually prefer to call 'confidence') is extremely relevant.

                      precisely.

FYI, I have come to think religious discussions have no place on public boards. There's always someone who offends someone so one's spiritual beliefs are private, imho and should be kept that way!

The faith required to succeed is the faith in ourselves, in our own innate abilities. Yes, it's confidence!

I'm going to put you guys onto something
very real, and it isn't my "opinion".

Faith is the key to any and everything you achieve.

Many people relate faith to God or religion and that's
                          where the confusion begins.

Anyone who says you don't need "faith" doesn't even
knwo what faith is to begin with.

I have no religon, but do I believe in the laws of the universe?
Yea of course, I'd be an idiot not to, givin that I've study success
in a broad level, and an individual basis, and the same common
                          themes come up.

The main one is faith. That is probably the biggest thing that
seperates the successful from the unsuccessful.

If you are a complete athiest it doesn't matter, faith is already
scientifically proven to be a key component to goal achievement.

If we take it to a pure scientific level, what you believe becomes
                          your reality.

If you believe it's impossible to become a millionaire even on a subconcious
level, your mind will make sure that becomes your experience, and you
will always find an abundance of real world "proof" on why it's impossible.

Again this isn't my opinion, do some research.

Belief in the unseen, whatever you what to call it, faith is
                          necessary to achieve ANY goal.

People don't achieve goals in life because at some point they
lose their faith, and stop striving forward.

Anyone who says faith isn't necessary uses the power of their
faith all the time, and just don't realize.

Just remember don't be close minded and ignorant like
most people. Actually look into this stuff and see if it
                          works for you.

Don't just shrug it off as "hocus pocus" because other ignorant
                          people do.

Try out the laws of the universe, and if it doesn't work for you
then say forget. But give it a fair chance and stop thinking
you know every got damn thing.

Cuz all y ou really know is what someone else told you and
                          conditioned you to believe.

I understand what you're getting at, and the importance of that kind of motivating thought, but I still have to say that 'I think I can' still pales in comparison to 'I know I can'. By the time I act on something so little faith is involved that it's almost become irrelevant.

For my money, the dictionary describes the word the best:

                              faith
                              n.

                              1. Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.
                              2. Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. See Synonyms at belief, trust.
                              3. Loyalty to a person or thing; allegiance: keeping faith with one's supporters.
                              4. often Faith Christianity The theological virtue defined as secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will.
                              5. The body of dogma of a religion: the Muslim faith.
                              6. A set of principles or beliefs.

                                I love this subject myself.

Faith in yourself and acceptance of yourself when you make a mistake (because you will) is the key to success.

I love the quote from Think and Grow Rich

"Do not wait; the time will never be ''just right.'' Start
where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have
at your command, and better tools will be found as you go
                                along."
                                - Napoleon Hill

If you just take action and have faith that your action will produce a desired result, it will the more you do it.

Even when you don't get the result you want, you try another plan until you get the desired result. It almost sounds over simplified, but it works.

I'm going to use the classic definition of faith as belief in God or a supreme being or whatever you choose to call it (and not any specific religion).

I'm curious why so many people seem so hostile to faith and want to put others down for having it. Not just here, but all over.

If someone enjoys going to church (or temple or synagogue or whatever) or reading the bible (or other book) or praying or whatever, why does that upset you?

As long as you aren't forced to participate, what exactly is the problem?

The funny thing is that most religious people I know do not get upset if someone else chooses to be an athiest.

Let's pretend for a minute there is no God. Even so, if people want to pray or attend church, what's the harm in that if they enjoy doing it?

And how is it that some people are so sure there is no God? I can understand it if people don't know, but how can they be so sure about there being no God?

Logically, I don't think it can be proved whether there is or is not a God.

Let's say there is one and you don't believe. You may be in for a rude awakening some day.

Now look at the opposite: you believe in God, but it turns out there is none. No harm done there.

And please spare us any arguments about people starting wars over religion and so forth since that is not what I'm talking about here, which is people being able to peacefully believe (or not) whatever they choose, rather than people who misuse religion for other purposes.

BTW, the reason it is called faith is because there is not scientific evidence. If we could scientifically prove that God exists then there would be no faith needed, just like I don't need faith to believe that the earth revolves around the sun.

A part of the reason why so many take offense to "faith" is because certain faiths are extremely offensive. It is not very nice to hear or read in some "holy" book that you would be better off being killed or deserve to be tortured for all eternity for not believing a particular claim.

To add insult to injury, these certain faiths essentially demand to not be criticized. Fortunately, it is now illegal for their "holy" men to kill heretics and such in my country. They just make ignorant threats.

                  A small tip for any.

A few years back, i had asked Senor member Forum Moderator Patrician and Pip's help, to please help me here at the forum as i felt i was a very poor speller of words. She pointed me to the dictionary and said see would keep an eye on me per the spelling and her added advice, to become good at web marketing, study word definitions, word use and placement.
Great advice Pat, thank you. It has helped. Maybe because i had the faith it would.

I have used many times and highly recommend, - WikipediA -
If any have not seen there page about the word faith, Go check it out. Enjoy.

                  And Quote;

                  Faith.
Faith is a belief in the trustworthiness of an idea. Formal usage of the word "faith" is usually reserved for concepts of religion, as in theology, where it almost universally refers to a trusting belief in a transcendent reality (ergo a belief in a spiritual nature and in spiritual immortality), or else in a Supreme Being and said being's role in the order of transcendent, spiritual things.

Informal usage of the word "faith" can be quite broad, and may be used standardly in place of either as "trust," "belief," or "hope". For example, the word "faith" can refer to a religion itself or to religion in general. (For informal uses of the word "faith", see Faith (word)). As with "trust," faith involves a concept of future events or outcomes.
On WikipediA's page, (want ever this means, ya right. Go read it for your self. i did).
Epistemological validity of faith with Fideism and Pistisism.
Also, very nice wording and usage descriptions section, "Faith in world religions".
Like; Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Bahá'í Faith.
Read on to there "Criticisms of faith" and "Further reading & notes" sections.
Great stuff found there. Contine reading...

I also found the word Relevance to be interesting. Check it out.
Relevance is a term used to describe how pertinent, connected, or applicable something is to a given matter.

Uses "In epistemology, In politics, In logic, In economics, In cognitive science and pragmatics, In law, In Library and Information Science".
                  Great stuff, continue reading...
In a previous post i mentioned the importance of "hearing or reading" it for your self first. This is very important as each of us are the decision makers of our selves and are responsible for the outcomes of our own life's. You believe or you do not. You hear or you chose not to hear.
When you start learning of faith and start understanding how it works, you will find your self learning things in life with a different level of knowledge.

                  I would also like to share two WF Members and there ongoings;

I have faith that our forefathers had faith in themselves, their beliefs, and their rugged individualism to create this great country. I have faith that the blessings and opportunities that are presented with each sunrise are mine for the choosing. And, I have faith that along with making my choices for my life in this great country, I also have responsibility.

Faith is more than a belief.

Faith = belief in something not seen + persistent action based on that belief

Something not seen-- God, a goal not yet achieved, a character trait, an ability in development etc...

If you can see it you don't need faith.

If you can't you need to take actions to do your part of bringing it into existence.

Thanks for this. The truth of the matter is that i have tried to study this important topic called faith and i have come to understand that any Faith without its foundation in the WORD of GOD is no faith.

If you must believe in yourself, you must believe in the word of God about you. If you must believe in your project you must believe in the word of God concerning your project...

The TRUEST FOUNDATION of Faith is THE WORD OF GOD.

I have posted great articles on this topic on my blog when i got to understand this great truth.

The question now is what then is the WORD of GOD?
                            Is it real or vague?
                            is it powerful or powerless?
Is it just a piece of writings in a book called the Bible?

Oh this getting very interesting and i hope to start a thread on this...hopefully.

I am not a religious person, I am not a Christian and I do not proselytize.

                However,

Faith is very important in success. Why? Why do you think you will be successful? Is it because you have faith in yourself and that you know you can do what is necessary to accomplish your goals? Is this not faith? You can't prove this, you only believe it to be true. Yes, you know yourself (at least I hope so) so you know your limitations and capabilities. But it is faith.
Still don't believe faith is important in success?

Faith when applied to religion can be offensive, because some religions can be offensive when they have no respect for others. But there is more than one meaning to faith, just like there is more than one meaning to success.

Please, everybody keep your minds open, instead of telling others to do so.

                  Hey,

I love this topic and would like to share some knowledge about faith.

According to the word of the Most High Lord God of Heaven and Earth and all they that dwell therein:

"Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God."
                  (Romans 10:17)

"Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen."
                  (Hebrews 11:1)

                  "Faith works by love."

"Without faith it is impossible to please God."

"All things are possible to him who believes."

"The just shall walk by faith."

"Walk by faith and not by sight."

"If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God the Father raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved."

"Through faith and patience inherit the promise God made to Abraham."

There's much more in the living word of God.

Did you know there's an actual "Hall of Faith" ?

That's where God lists people who pleased Him by enduring in seeing the invisible and believing in Him despite what their mortal senses felt or merely calculated.

Enoch walked so close with God that the Lord translated Him right into Heaven. Elijah went up on a chariot.

Jesus walked so close with God when He was on earth before ascending that He said, "I and the Father are one."

and "Of my own self I can do nothing. The words I speak are not mine but the word of He whom sent me. I speak as I hear my Father and the Father doeth the works. I do the works that I see my Father do."

Imagine the faith it took to KNOW for sure that the Father was going to raise Him from the dead as He obeyed and endured the pain and suffering on the cross where He ONCE and FOR ALL
PAID IN FULL the punishment of ALL our sins and the sins of the whole world!

People mocked and hated him. He forgave and still forgives them.

Even after His resurrection and after appearing to more than 500 witnesses, one of his friends, Thomas had to put his hands into his side.
Every eye will see him and look upon whom they pierced and will mourn for him as if their own son.

Jesus told Thomas, "Because you have seen with your senses, you believe. But Blessed are they who have not seen yet and believe anyway!"

Abraham believed God and God actually said,

                  "Abraham is my friend."

How cool! When GOD, the Lord Himself, you know the Most High and Lofty One who inhabits all of eternity

                  calls YOU friend...woo hoo!

If God is for us, whom should we fear? What can mere man do to us?

If God is for you, who can be against you?

"What is the victory that has already overcome the world?

                  ...Even our faith!"

Faith without works is death (it is not), so your actions and behavior would always show what kind of faith you (and me) have. A particular ancient script says "...I'll you my faith through my works." Believe in yourself, other people and your particular business system is nescessary for some high effort, low inmediate payoff actions. Just my 2 cents!

I believe first & foremost you have to have faith in yourself to overcome adversity & limitations that you are only given what you can handle even if you think you're not capable of it yourself. Often times I find you must be in essence your own cheerleader because not everyone will recognize your abilities & your progress. But overall confidence & faith in yourself is the true path to success along w/ positive focus & attitude. Seeing beyond the horizon from many viewpoints collectively assessing what you want & desire thus manifesting those very things into your life.

    Much love & healing,

I have absolute faith that God will present us all with a brand new sunrise everyday, its horizon littered with opportunities and choices for what we want in our lives. Even on days when the sun's rays can not be seen, when doubt or confusion reigns in one's life, there is, nonetheless, a sunrise.

I have faith, that although opportunities and choices abound, God will NOT take the action required to achieve what we want. Kind'a like, "God may give us a Cadillac - but, He won't drive it for us".

I know that, and have faith, God will not leave us stranded, so long as we reach out to the horizon for our opportunities and are grateful for what we DO have. He teaches us how to build a bridge from where we're standing, built upon the pillars of vision, willingness and commitment, to arrive at our dreams.

I also have absolute faith that no action - no dreams!

Faith is very important within the context of having creative control of our lives.

It provides the bridge over the gap that may exist between where we are now and where we want to be. It's confidence in the unseen path that leads us to our destination.

Very often there is an outcome we greatly desire - we know what we want - but we just don't know how to reach it. It may be great prosperity; being able to work from home; having a successful and rewarding internet business that allows us to give up our day job; a beautiful and loving relationship; a healthy body when faced with disease; or any other desire that is important to us.

But I know many people who will not move (or only falteringly) towards the objects of their desires because they cannot see the steps required to guarantee success. They want the way to be clear and obvious before they will follow any path that may lead them there.

In other words, they are immobilized, frozen into inaction, "destined" to fail! They are shy people who remain friendless; poor people who live from week to week; people craving love and affection yet feel rejected; sick people daily facing pain or weakness. Visit any cancer clinic and see the expressions of gloom (I've been there and seen it).

Yet there are others who will push ahead towards their wants, hoping that the next attempt will pay off, but sure that even if it doesn't the outcome they want will eventually come to pass - they will eventually find a way. Perhaps the path cannot be seen right now but they "know", have faith, believe that they will eventually get there; that sooner or later they will reach their goal.

These people have a very different mindset to those who want steps that are guaranteed to work. They feel comfortable with uncertainty, of not knowing HOW they will bridge the gap between where they are right now and where they want to be; just confident that it WILL eventually happen, they just don't know how - yet.

I've noticed that, with many financially successful people, they seem to view life as a series of tests or trials. Each action isn't considered final and success or failure doesn't hinge on a single trial but simply a step in the right direction. They are constantly testing the path before them to see whether it moves them forward, enabling them to progress another step.

Many are familiar with the story of Thomas Edison and his efforts to invent the light bulb. After 1,000 (some report this as 3,000) attempts had failed, he was asked about what it felt like and did he consider himself a "failure". He replied that he'd merely found 1,000 ways that didn't work.

Some will say being confident of eventual success in the absence of a clear path is because they believe in God or past lives, or themselves, or a guiding spirit, or the tarot cards, or a fortune teller, or astrology, or past experience, or...

"Why" isn't as important as the "act" of believing it will happen. If a talisman or lucky charm enables them to believe in a successful outcome, so be it. If the authority of a kindly doctor leads them to believe in a successful outcome, so be it. If a statue of Zeus enables them to believe in a successful outcome, so be it. If a holy book assures them that success is possible, so be it. If success can be seen in the stars, so be it.

It does make you wonder about those who expect success simply because they can feel that success long before it actually appears.

Recently a ministers wife told me you must have faith in the bible when I explained that as an archaeologist my research shows that most of the Old Testament is based on myth. She was defending her husband's recent acceptance of a posting in the army. She explained that God supports war because of the Philistines and so on.

To me faith is accepting the illogical without proof and placing oneself at the mercy of those who have written a lot of rubbish about how and what they think. many have faith in there being a heaven and hell yet neither place has shown up in recent ventures into the cosmic regions around earth by space travelers, cameras mounted on spaceships, etc. Therefore, heaven and hell exist only in the imagination of those who believe in the illogical without proof.

My take on this is to have confidence in yourself, not faith, and to trust that the knowledge you have and the direction in which you aim yourself is right for you. If it isn't you'll soon know about it.

Anticipating an expected outcome which exists in the future inevitably involves an element of faith.

Science itself is based on "faith" although it tries to quantify the degree of confidence and the probable outcome by using mathematics.

Likewise, backing a horse in a race involves an element of faith as no matter how much punters study the history of a horse's performance, the conditions of the track, the weight to be carried, the skill of the jockey and trainer, the barrier position, etc, the outcome is by no means certain.

Ask the connections of the American champion horse, Native Dancer. He'd won 12 starts in a row when he took part in the 1953 Kentucky Derby. The jockey rode him in such a way that he faced a wall of horses heading into the straight, 2 1/2 lengths behind the leader. By the time he got a clear run, the post was too close and he was beaten a head. The third horse was five lengths further back. Native Dancer was never beaten again. His record: 22 starts, 21 wins, 1 second. (As an aside, nearly all top racehorses today are descended from Native Dancer through his grandsons, the champion stallions Northern Dancer and Mr Prospector.)

However, mankind has long sought to attribute meaning to the world around us and, towards this end, has provided a number of explanations that have been useful (for the day) in accounting for our experiences in the world around us. Just look at the multiplicity of gods and goddesses available to ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. These were useful in explaining the seasons, the cosmos, a poor or successful harvest, success in battle, and much more. The priests played an important role in the culture of those societies and were part of the power structure.

The belief systems encouraged by the priests, whilst founded on false information, nonetheless gave a "rationale" to people and their endeavors, helped to unify a nation, provided social bonding, alleviated anxiety, etc - unless, of course, you questioned the accepted ways and were considered a heretic!

That humans search for meaning can be easily demonstrated in scientific studies - just look at the numerous experiments carried out by Gestalt Psychologists, as an example. Also consider the anecdotal accounts of survivors from concentration camps. Those with a firm belief in their religion to sustain them were much more inclined to survive than those who didn't have a belief system that offered hope. (If you want a reference, have a look at Viktor Frankl's 1946 book, "Man's Search for Meaning".)

We only need to look at proverbs, aphorisms, and the like, to see that people were long aware of simple basic principles of predicting outcomes; eg, a stitch in time saves nine; people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones; those who live by the sword, die by the sword, etc. And, from the New Testament, "We reap what we sow".

Unfortunately, those who had greater insight into the principles that would be useful in explaining the true nature of our world and/or offering better outcomes for human behavior, were faced with offering these insights within a society that already had established and, usually, rigid beliefs.

Christ's teachings of the value of kindness, forgiveness, compassion, hope, and much more, required, if his message was to be understood, that it be expressed in terms that could be understood by his listeners - Jewish communities that accepted the idea of a single, external God which was responsible for all creation; the existence of heaven, hell, angels and devils, etc. Even so, the priests of his day considered him a heretic and his teachings a threat to the established order.

Those who've studied comparative religions have long been aware of the many common elements to be found among them - in particular in describing a system of personal behavior which is likely to result in a happy, fruitful life, even if justified by the promise of reward in an afterlife.

Unsurprisingly, those who consistently express kindness, forgiveness, compassion, and hope, regardless of their religions or explanations, tend to attract others who are like-minded.

Likewise, those who are fearful or express hostility, hatred and aggression, experience conditions which support those feelings and "justify' those attitudes continuing to be held. Someone who carries a knife out of fear of attack will be aware of the many threats in their environment - justifying the need to carry a knife! Those who are truly peace-loving will be more conscious of the harmony which surrounds them. Those who express hatred to gain peace are likely to find they don't live in a peace-loving world.

However people choose to justify their beliefs, selecting those which attract love, peace, harmony, and prosperity creates a path to a way of life that most would find satisfying.

You know, it's easy sometimes to lose sight of what's important but each of us can build up our faith by reading and hearing God's word if we access to a bible or even from memory when we speak it aloud.

The last enemy that will be destroyed (stopped) is death.
Death is just another spirit subject to God.

There have been numerous resurrections resulting from believers in Christ excercising their authority over the spirit of death and reclaiming life for someone who was revived.

For one example, the man of God, Smith Wigglesworth had over 20+ dead people raised back to life under his ministry.

I can assure you, there was no other "self" or "name" except the name of Jesus who has the power to do that and did once for all.

      Be blessed.

To those who believe in Christ Jesus, we are loosed from the bondage of the fear of death, because we know that even after we die, we will live eternally with God the Father in Heaven.

The truth is, there is no clever man made anything or anyone that isn't subject to the same name that gives life to the dead and calls those things that are not yet seen as though they already were!

Perhaps Thomas Edison was simply modeling the Father, who said,
      "Let there be light"

when he claimed to "see" the very first lightbulb.

I'll try to expand on this in more detail on a later post but for now I just want people to be aware of the distinction of what faith by definition and what an estimate, probability, likelihood (degree of chance or randomness) in science. I am both a man of faith and a scientist by trade and philosophy, so I try not to confuse these two types of "knowledge". In the most simplistic explanation the difference is one requires material (physical ) facts and the other spiritual (metaphysical) facts. I promise I will come back and elaborate.
    Peace.

It seems that most of the above authors have faith that God is a man. That is the most appalling thing when one considers how violent, discriminatory, destructive, power hungry, and greedy most men are. Just look at the state of the world if you don't believe.

There is not a man in the world that I would consider is godlike and if they are created in God's image then God help us. As for the bible most of it was written by men for men and my research and books prove the basis for most of it was ancient beliefs born of ignorance and Assyrian and Egyptian religions founded on sun worship.`

So if one has faith in what is written therein, aside from some prophecies, then you are in for a shock. Think again! Surely you confuse faith with confidence to believe in yourself and the knowledge you have that the sun will rise tomorrow, even that, however, is not a certainty.

I have really enjoyed all the various views of contributors to this thread. I am not suprised there are so much to talk about concerning this topic. It is a major topic. Without it, the Bible says you cannot please GOD.

Some days ago, i was doing some meditation about this topic of faith and i came to some one or two conclusions about faith. I want to share with you what i have:

Faith is not partial: I searched through the Bible and i observed the types of people Jesus credited GREAT FAITH to their record- the centurion, the woman who refused to be called a "dog" and so on. These people were not recognised christians but they got credited with "GREAT FAITH". This makes the topic very interesting. Faith is at your disposal if you can use it(no matter your age or standing in the society) or if you can understand what is required of you to put up a GREAT Faith- the word of God (this is where i have seen all the promises about my future, my project etc)
I only carry out a search in the word of God any time i am confused about a matter and when i get it, i know i am "condemned" to ACT on it. When i act on it i must succeed because i have put my faith to work since faith makes things work.

Faith works with intangible things: i also discovered faith does not work with what you can see physically. Thomas Edison failed 1000 times to make a bulb. That great man never "saw" those failures, rather he "saw" success. This made him to fight on to achieve his aim.

Faith is just a fantastic thing.

Putting my own voice to this thread is a thing of joy. Faith is the most important thing on planet earth, everyone has faith in one thing or the other.
I have faith in the Almighty God, I believe that He is the creator of all things in all of the universe.
I also believe in me, I just believe I can do all things, that nothing is impossible for me. I believe that every human being deserve to be treated with respect. I can continue on and on.
All these belief that I expressed above are my faith in action.

Very interesting reading the different replies on the "The relevance of faith", my definition holds true for me, each person has to come to their on conclusions, some may make it a religious thing, others may see it as a metaphysical thing, some may see it as powerful, other may think irrelevant, my thinking is that next to love, faith is the most powerful tool in the Universe.

Interesting thread. I think it's hard to hold the word "faith" to one meaning. Some people use the word for confidence in themselves. Others use it to describe their level of trust in a concept. Still others use it for spiritual beliefs.

Those of us who believe "the just shall life by faith" have a deeply held truth about what we mean when the word is used in this manner. It has nothing to do with confidence in ourselves or trust in a concept or beliefs in a philosophy.

For a good debate about the relevance of faith, it seems we first need to agree on what we mean by faith . . . otherwise the spinning can just go on and on and on and on . . .

    Just my thoughts.

      Hey SusanUSA,

I just wanted to say thanks for you blog about you making $12,000 in 5 weeks. Very touching and informational.

For the rest of this thread....

One thing I have learned about Faith is that it is an action word not just something to be said. If you have faith in something, you are going to act upon it and do it.

If you have faith in Jesus Christ, then you will obey his teachings and commandments.

If you have faith in your business, then you are going to do the necessary things to make it work and grow.

Well, there is my two bits on this subject.

With all the Christians on here I did not see the biblical definition of faith. If I missed it forgive me.

According to Hebrews 11:1 Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

However, I do not have it with me and may come back later to quote it. Napoleon Hill Think and Grow Rich probably has the most influential definition I have seen in a long time.

Faith is very necessary. I think some on this thread have confused this post with believing in God. Who I believe in, but that is another topic... I digress

Faith is important to me, I would NOT start something, unless I had the faith(in this case belief) that I could do it.

That is how I attack anything I take on believe you can do it and you will.

Sure I might fail, but that's a part of success and it's learning curve and I always believe in(or have faith in) myself and my ability to undertake something new or to complete a goal/task

I've enjoyed this discussion. Interestingly, for centuries various groups have sought ways to interrupt conscious thinking and the mind's tendency to look for logical consistency so as to experience what lies beyond that. It is the conscious mind (ego) which demands 'proof'.

Hence, uncritical, trance-like states have been induced by whirling dancers, peyote and other drugs, hypnosis, chanting, meditation and more. Some will try to side-step the critical faculty by 'faith' or accepting an idea without 'proof'.

There can not only be spiritual advantages to this. Interrupting mind-chatter can also relieve stress (and insomnia) as we still the conscious mind and its tendency to constantly analyze, plot, plan, and direct our thoughts. When the mind is still, the body is able to relax.

As well, the subconscious 'mind' is still able to respond to information that is uncritically accepted, such as suggestions we find smoking distasteful (for those wanting to quit smoking), sweets are to be avoided (if you wish to lose weight), relieve pain, and much more.

This is an area we'll hear a lot more about in the coming century as many individuals learn to still conscious, critical thinking at will.

For those who'd like to read more about this, a current work which is well worth reading is Eckhart Tolle's 'The Power of Now'.

I'm not big on the term FAITH because it implies dependence on something external (to me).

Words like Confidence, Courage, and Vision have more appeal to me. Success comes from within. But you do have to have enough confidence in the business endeavor you're getting in (which can come from due diligence, research, planning, and experience) and in your own ability to pull it off.

Also, the word faith is often used to downplay contradictory evidence, whereas I believe faith is best used to fill gaps where no evidence exists.

        Thank you!

I think the obstacles great men work past are usually:

        1) Erroneous or "obvious" assumptions that no one dared to question, and
        2) Other people's social resistance, motivated by their fears / limited thinking

Working past these obstacles is a result of critical thinking, not from believing in that which can't be observed. So really, greatness isn't achieved by ignoring real evidence but by ignoring false evidence appearing real.

Anything we have a strong interest in will alert us to evidence to support it. It has little to do with critical thinking, although we'll mentally check it for relevance. We become more aware of matters which are in harmony with our interest and these offer us choices to follow up.

For instance, some years ago, I developed an interest in golf. I soon became much more aware of TV and newspaper advertising for golf products, noticed golfing equipment in store windows, had discussions with friends about golfing days, read golfing articles in magazines, noticed golfing reports in newspapers, saw golfing tournaments being broadcast on television, and drove past numerous golf courses I'd previously only been dimly aware existed. Without any conscious effort, I became much more aware of 'golf' in the world around me.

The same applies to our prejudices. If we take a dislike to particular races, organizations, religions, individuals, political parties, etc, we'll soon discover 'evidence' to support those views as selective perception responds to those attitudes.

'Good' and 'bad' beliefs will stimulate ideas and alert us to opportunities that are consistent with them, especially when strong feelings are involved.

We'll make decisions and choices and take action based on the information we've become alert to. In this way, our beliefs shape our future.

As individuals, and members of society, it can be very beneficial to develop values which are rooted in what we are for - love, kindness, prosperity, peace, joy, and the like - as when we are focused on what we are against, arousing negative feelings - hatred, fear, anger, envy, jealousy, and such - there will also be ample 'evidence' to support those views.

It's tempting to think that we behave in a rational way, collect information, assess it and then form an opinion which is the basis of our beliefs. Rather, the information we are constantly alert to will be consistent with beliefs already held.

Very well said and I agree with 99% of this. Only caution I would have is this phrase.

"So really, greatness isn't achieved by ignoring real evidence but by ignoring false evidence appearing real."

It is an absolute statement but as you well know my friend there is always more than one way to skin a cat. There is more than one way to do things. You can achieve greatness in the ignoring of real evidence to achieve a great goal.

However, I don't want to spend time on that because you next few words have a much bigger truth that many need. "False evidence appearing real" I have no idea how many times I have said that in the last year, either to myself or others.

I said I would return with what I feel is the very best explanation of faith By Napolean Hill. This is one man most cannot argue with. His success and references are unmatched by many.

Faith is the "eternal elixir" that gives life, power, and action to the impulse of thought! The forgoing sentence is worth reading a second time and a third and a fourth. It is worth reading aloud!

Faith is the starting point of all accumulation of riches! Faith is the basis of all "miracles", and all mysteries that cannot be analyzed by the rules of science!

Faith is the only known antidote for failure. Faith is the element, the "chemical" that, when mixed with prayer, gives one direct communication with Infinite Intelligence.

Faith is the element that transforms the ordinary vibration of thought, created by the finite mind of man, into the spiritual equivalent.

Faith is the only agency through which the cosmic force of Infinite Intelligence can be harnessed and used by man. (Napolean Hill) pg 83-84 Think and Grow Rich
