Rational, Scientific Self Improvement?

I'm very interested in learning about methods of self-improvement or growth that are scientific in nature, based in rationality.

I have ZERO belief in anything supernatural including gods, angels, fairies, spirits, "law" of attraction etc. Please don't bring any of that stuff onto this thread. I find it quite offensive.

I really could only take seriously methods that have been subject to some scientific scrutiny or which lend themselves to being scrutinised scientifically. NLP and CBT come to mind immediately, but these are very broad terms. I'm looking for implementable systems that don't involve the services of a third party/therapist etc.

I'm leaning towards the Sedona Method, simply because it appeals to me on an emotional level and they can show some measured results - even if the REASON for those results is not entirely clear.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or know of other good online resources for those of us who insist on rationality?

Thanks
CW

You will also want to check out Cybernetic Transposition, by Stuart Lichtman, who is a scientist himself.

A M.I.T. genius, to be exact.

I think you first need to define what you mean by "self improvement." You can't reach a goal if you don't know what the goal is and how you can measure when you achieve it. For instance, I can say "improve my writing skills to the point that I have 400 people reading my blog regularly." Or "be able to find flaws in many of the pseudoscientific explanations of Quantum Mechanics."

Are you interested in learning analytical skills? Research skills? Physical ability? Mental agility? Ability to make unusual knowledge connections? BS meter enhancing skills?

(I'm not asking this to be annoying. I'm a retired anthropologist who does occasional research. You can't research unless you have a good question, and formulating a good question with a known "answer point" is critical to doing research. Otherwise you just get garbage.)

BTW... a lot of garbage and recycled fluff has been sold under the concept of "self-improvement" to people who are told they need to improve themselves but are never told what they need to improve or why or what the result is supposed to be -- other than enriching the guru and making them feel "enriched" for awhile.

Hi, you may wish to ask yourself something. Why espouse seeking rational when by your own volition you state: "I'm leaning towards the Sedona Method, simply because it appeals to me on an emotional level"

The key being : "it appeals to me on an emotional level"

True clarity is derived from a single point of focus. It appears you may be out of focus.

Is it rational or emotional you seek?

      Thoughts?

Sedona method is NOT scientific. The guy who created it just likes to say that but there is no rigorous research to support it.

CBT definitely is scientific. So for any improvements you want to make related to your beliefs, confidence, self-image or mood, I'd use that.

Personally I think the sedona method or release technique is the best self impovement method out there. There have been some scientific studies on it - proving it to be effective. It's similar to what Zen or what Eckhart Tolle teaches - but zen or Tolle's method won't make you a millionare by themselves. Sedona releasing can. Basically it teaches you to release all resistance to a goal - allowing you to take action..And by releasing - sometimes you find out that action is not even needed.

I don't see much "rational" at all or even "scientific" about the sedona method. There may be good points to it though but if you're looking for rational that's not where you should go. To automatically assume all religions have no scientific base is a wrong assumption as well.

I would recommend you look into Brian Tracy's books. He has some pretty good free material on his website.

Have you tried the Sedona Method? I believe Brian Tracy even endorses it. You can apply "releasing" to Tracy's methods and get even better results. In fact, you can use it to "improve" any self improvement formula.
