Proof That You Shouldn't Give Up, Always Give it One Last Try

Someone had once told me the story of a man who believed in the fact that people give up too soon so strongly that he would buy old gold mines and then keep digging. I don't know if it's a true story but apparently this man had amassed quite a bit of wealth after a while.

Well, today I had a few errands to run and on my way back home I stopped by a store I know of that sells used books. Collecting books is one of my favorite hobbies so I always stop by this store when I get a chance. I was digging through the piles of books outside without finding anything too interesting so I went inside where they had a few more piles.

I dug around for a while and didn't find much so I considered giving up and going home. For some reason, I decided to look around one last time. I got on my knees and elbows on the dirty floor and started looking through the very last shelf all the way in the back. It was all old encyclopedias until I found two amazing treasures.

One was a 1913, hardcover edition of Kidnapped by Stevenson (who wrote Treasure Island) and one was a 1919 hardcover edition of "The Boy's King Arthur". Both were published by Scribner and, most importantly, had full color illustration plates by N C Wyeth!

I took my find to the counter, it was obvious the guy had no idea what they were. He tried to tell me they probably weren't worth anything, I ignored him and paid cash for the full asking price.

It came out to a whopping $4 for both books!

I went right home and got out my laptop. I had expected that the two books would, at least, be worth more than $4. Well, it turns out that the Kindapped alone is worth about $300 or more! Together they could be worth $400-$500 or more!

Buried in the bottom shelf, all the way in the back of a grungy little store in Queens were two absolute treasures for any bibliophile.

The best part is that this isn't even a bookstore, it's not even an antique store. Books have absolutely nothing to do with what this store sells.

So this just proves, once again, that you should never give up. Never give up until you have searched through everything. Don't simply assume you won't make it or you won't find anything until you've put in the effort required to prove it.

There could be a treasure just around the corner and you won't find it if you give up.

Just imagine how many amazing things you've missed simply because you assumed they wouldn't be there and gave up. You never know what you're missing.

Always keep digging.
