Try Something New For 30 Days

SO, I am back with another post and video

I know I have been posting a lot because I just want to share the AWESOME content I find that move me and I know it may move some of you.

Hey, this is what it is all about. To learn and to SHARE the joy of something exciting and new. When I have a new idea, thoughts, inspiration, I text, email, Facebook someone I know...to share and rejoice together.

With that said, saw this video today, a TED Talk from Matt Cutts about trying something new, for 30 days, watch it, it is only a bit over 3 minutes:

Great talk eh?

And you know, I am totally agreeing with him. 30 days. I've done this with going vegan, no coffee, no tea, sugar, AC during the summer, writing in a journal, running, biking, calling someone new everyday....so many ideas and ways to enhance life. To make it fun.

And as the great Jim Rohn once said:

"Life is not just the passing of time. Life is the collection of experiences and their intensity

I'd always heard it only takes 21 days. But even 28 is a pretty good deal!

You beat me to it. I heard that number too, but like I said, it is a consistent action to have it ingrain in you.

I've heard so many different numbers already and all I know is this...it takes consistency to build any habit

And the 30 days here, not just about habit, it is also about adventures and doing something new.

I can tell you a habit that i am forming and seeing wonders, posting on my blog daily. I've gotten to the point where daily, i add a new well researched post to my blog. And optimize or tweak my site and make an improvment daily. And the funny thing is this is a brand new site, no backlinks and i'm seeing considerable improvent. Content really is king.

Back at the start of the year I did some research around this magic number of how many days it actually takes to create a habit and, as the comments even here on this thread can attest to, there is no one magic number. Some people say 21, others 28 or 30. But in some cases you can create or break a habit instantly.

When I was 17 I went to my friend's 18th birthday party and the last thing I drank before falling asleep by her toilet was Baileys (an Irish cream liqueur.) I'll leave the rest to your imagination when I say that I was very poorly the next day and as a result, in an instant I broke the habit of drinking Baileys. I've not been able to go near the stuff since!

Now I totally understand that that's a very extreme example and some might argue that that's different but the point is, given strong enough motivation, habits can be created or broken in days (or moments!) It seems to me that the trick isn't it forcing ourselves to stick with something until a habit is created but instead tapping into the reasons for wanting to create the change.

This isn't always the case (for example, I have the habit of cleaning my teeth every day despite not having built a strong motivation for wanting to do so!) but if you want to create or break a habit, couple the strong reasons for wanting to do so with the actual act of doing it every day and you'll have a strong duo fighting your corner.

I really enjoyed this video. I think it is a good reminder how trying something new for 30 days can bring a new perspective and inspiration to what we do. And this can be worth its weight in gold.

Roy thanks for posting. I wrote a post on my blog about exactly the same thing a while back, but I love that little talk.

That is awesome and you live in a beautiful country as my friend Tony Tanser (great runner and coach) tells me a lot about.

Go get the spark. Live it up. Take on one thing. There's a lot to do in one's own backyard. And oh, I encourage you to change a word or two of yours and instead of saying "let me try it out", say "I am going to give it a go". "

That is beautiful. And ya, content is really king, and so is context as well, but she can be queen if we can't have two kings. LOL.

And right there you explained the power of momentum and the fulfillment you get daily for seeing it through. Keep rocking.

      Fantastic insight!

And yes, you are totally RIGHT! Habits can be decided to be broken in a moment time, and where there's enough motivation to do, it is gone instantly. What you described is the power of a "self anchor". You are disgusted by the taste of the drink and may never get near it again.

I am reminded of a story that Tony Robbins tell over how when he was a young boy, maybe 13ish at the time, he wanted to drink beer like one of his dads. So mom let him....and also told him if he is to drink, he must finish the whole beer. And he opened the beer, didn't like it, but mom kept saying, you must finish the beer. And he did. And I believe she made him drink a bit more too afterward. Result? Tony won't go near beer again.

What the video above is not so much talking about creating new habits but rather giving things a shot. Having fun with new experiments and just being able to say "I did that once".

Now, about your story...what else happened...

Indeed so. When you delve into a topic, an area in life, you can honestly say, let me tell you what I think about that and you would be able to say it with a bit of a flair because you actually did it.

Awesome, what is the post may I ask?

And it is a great talk. Love talks that are short, and WOW.
