Why Do Most People Pray Last Instead of First?

I read a recent poll in that stated over 83% of people in America believe in prayer. But most admitted praying mostly in emergencies, out of desperation or when facing extreme fear.

Why do you think most people pray as a last resort instead of a first option?

If it's good enough to turn to in our most challenging moments, wouldn't it make sense to do it first instead of last? What's your thougts on prayer?
