The Phrase "How To": A Goal Builder or Goal Killer?

Other than the word can't, the word "how" has probably sabotaged or even killed more goals and dreams than any other word in the English language.

For example, when people first dream or even set goals, the biggest mistake they make is to immediately try to figure out "how to" do it.

When no immediate solutions are found they abandon the dream or goal. Has this ever happened to you? Of course it has, at one time or another, am I right? It's happened to everyone ... at least once.

Here's an illustration. You dream of doing something, having something or accomplishing something.

Next your mind instantly wonders how, right? How can I make this happen? How am I going to do this? How am I going to get the money? How will I find the time? How, how, how!

By focusing on the how at the first stage of goal setting is like throwing sand inside a jet engine, it slows, hinders and even stops the process.

Instead try focusing on (paper) the who, what, when where and why concerning your goals. It will surprise you how fast the "how" will appear naturally when you focus on solving those 5 questions first - and leave the "how to" for last instead of first.

For example
- Why do I want do achieve this goal?
- Who will I talk to first to learn more about this goal?
- When do I plan to achieve it?
- Where will I go for help or assistance in achieving this goal?
- What action will I take as a first step?

The more detailed and specific you can make the who, what, when, where and why concerning your goals and dreams, the quicker your "how" will appear along with your dreams and goals. Try it!

I really like this advice as it really gets you into the 360 view of goal setting. The more you focus on the different aspects of your goals, the easier they become achievable.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • As I'm reading this post, I'm imagining a few areas where I can actually employ this...technique?...and already I feel so much more positive. I think I'll be revisiting a few project ideas that I had once dismissed simply because of the how-to syndrome you described here, this time to answer the 5 W's. Thank you for sharing this.
