Why so Much critcism for NLP?

Hey there, I was wondering is NLP that effective as people say it is?

Recently I read an article on wikepedia and it said then NLP is NLP in the "top ten" most discredited therapies.

But still I see so many Gurus swearing that it really works.

what's your experience?

Discredited because it's hard to study in a controlled environment. Just like studies have "disproven" hypnosis. It comes down to the practitioner and their own knowledge.

And it's funny what people who "discredit" NLP really say about it. There's a British mentalist (Derren Brown) who wrote a book and went into great lengths to explain why NLP is BS.

And later on in the book when he talks about techniques to improve your mood and boost your self confidence he refers back to NLP & Richard Bandler.

ps, if I knew someone who was depressed I'd recommend NLP before putting them on a pill.

pps, Yes I know NLP can do more than just put someone into a happier state of mind

Totally hit it on the nail.

Because it is not considered a science, the professional world don't want to accept it. Worse, it makes them look like idiots when a non-science gets results while they talk to their clients for years about why they don't like carrots.

      It is pathetic.

A client was in therapy for years for a smoking habit, and other things...one day I went to her, with her therapist permission and said "let me have a go with you".

90 minutes later, she is no longer smoking and that is a few months ago. And this is just one story.

People ask me all the time "What is NLP?" and I answer them the same words that Robert Dilts does "Whatever works".

      And isn't that the truth.

I have used many techniques and tools over the years and NLP is one of them. I've had great results with it, but then again I usually do with alternative therapies. Nothing is one size fits all, not even prescription medication. The human body and mind are incredibly complex. I like to try less invasive methods first. After all, what's the harm? Also, an issue you are working to resolve could actually be a symptom of something completely different that's buried deeper. You have to be willing to work at personal improvement and be open to the possibilities. You may find that they make a positive difference in your life.

Okay, so it seems that NLP works. Now my other concern is
is it possible to learn and become really proficient in NLP using home study courses or from online teleclasses?

Well anecdotes are just anecdotes. Its like people dreaming about stuff that will happen in the future and then it does. Holy crap. But they are forgetting that there are 6 billion people that from time to time dream about things that will happen in the future. Someone is bound to be right eventually.
NLP is discredited because its hogwash.

Kurlie says whats the harm. Well we have brain damage from lack of results when it comes to long lasting depression, suicides because of unsuccessful treatments (or lack of treatments etc) and so on and so forth. (Not just NLP but a lot of different alternative ways)
And symptoms of something buried deeper is also just made up. Its old freudian make belief. There really is only one scientifically tested with positive results treatment and that is CBT(or similar) with or without drugs.

And to answer your final question. Yup you can learn the techniques by paying a bunch of made up NLP experts money. Will you actually help anybody and make the world a better place from their teachings? Most likely no.
