I was reading through this article I posted on my blog a little while back and I liked it so much that I thought it was worth sharing...

I'm not going to pull any punches or sugar coat this question. Either you believe that success in work and life is something that requires focus, determination and hard work... or you believe in the money fairy who is going to magically drop thousands of dollars in your bank account just because you need the money.

I often quote people like Jim Rohn and Darren Hardy because they truly are realists. They enjoy amazing success because they work amazingly hard. I often listen to Jims CDs and in one of his presentations he talks about how success comes to deservers... not to needers. The old saying doesn't go 'if you need you will reap' - it says 'if you sow you will reap'. Sowing, or planting, requires that you take some action and do some work.

And yet there seem to be so many people who truly believe that rubbing a crystal or listening to a recording from some random beach will bring them good fortune - or that an hour or less of work each day is somehow going to make them rich. If that were true then surely we would live in an abundant world which had no poverty. It isn't true though.

The truth is that there are thousands of people selling programs that you don't need or that simply don't work. I wouldn't go as far as to say that they are thieves or liars but I would say that they lack integrity.

A person of integrity speaks with pride about the many peoples lives they have changed through their products and services. A person of integrity is able to demonstrate the success they and others have had from those products and services - rather than the success they have had purely from selling the products. A person of integrity doesn't present themself as a successful person when in reality they have an empty bank account and an empty life.

I often talk about the importance of properly defining what it is you want to do and who you want to be online. If you just want to make a few dollars here and there and enjoy the company of other people online then that's fine. But if you want to enjoy substantial success online then you have to start thinking and working like an online business owner.

You can't afford to neglect the important relationships that can be had with other online business owners. You can't afford to neglect the fact that it is an online business you are building and like any business you need to know how to set goals and, more importantly, how to achieve those goals. This is the reality of online business and the reason you need to be a realist in order to be successful. Despite what you may have read, there aren't any 'accidental millionaires'. Even those few who have had rapid and extraordinary success online started out with a unique idea. And rather than just think and ponder about that good idea, they got up off the couch and turned that idea into something tangible.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that the only pot of gold you are going to find at the end of the internet rainbow is the one that you create. The internet has made extraordinary success more accessible than ever before - for those who are prepared to get their hands dirty and work at it.

Keep it real!

It is hard to find a lot of people in the IM niche who are realists today. I think we all get swayed by the colorful pictures and projected lifestyle every once in awhile, and that makes us overlook the hard work it takes to get there. The best way in my opinion to get where you want is to find someone who's already there and have them train you.

I totally agree! Admittedly I got into the IM game after being sold on how to make riches in real estate. This was years ago, and it ultimately led to Internet marketing as an interest -since I finally realized this guy and other RE Gurus was making a fortune selling info and NOT real estate. Lacking integrity like you mention.. I've been duped by many of these guys before that because I feel like when people first start their expectations aren't realistic... myself included.

I do believe there would be more transparency if marketers were able to actually sell realistic expectations. Unfortunately that is not the case. I think its really about who you choose as a mentor and ultimately distinguish exactly what your business truly needs... Then of course being willing to put in the necessary work!! Like anything in this world... Being practical and realistic in IM is definitely beneficial and necessary for being fruitful online

Greg, that's real talk bro. I'm from the hood, and out here we don't play that BS! You know I'm going to come out the box and tell you there's SOME of IMer's out there that are REAL as teaching people to make money online, but then email some BS products and it gets me really mad. They talking about taking IM as a REAL Biz and it is REAL but they play us like that as we are stupid?! It doesn't make sense at all, I don't understand it, can't even find a reason why they would do something like that. I'm not going to point any fingers, I know who they are. In fact, I even made a list of people that are REAL and FAKE. These people need to play the game right, I don't like people that take money for granted, take too much pride in their selves. It's funny, like they say that they love helping people but just to get on somebody good side that they been through tragic in their life and yet they forgot what they been through. Turns out, that's just being fake why? They don't look at it as the other side, like drinking all of your soda and not give some to your brother or so, that's just messed up. I respect that they are helping people though but I don't want to associate with people with low character. I really don't care who you are, what you do, and where you're from. I'm not like these other marketers. Enough said. That's just me, I'm sorry if I offended anybody I'm just saying it like how it is.

From my point of view, "Being realistic" is sometimes the excuse that procrastinators use to explain why they are not making things happen.

However, a bit of realism is also necessary when you are making plans.

    Just my 2 cents.

On a slightly different note some of my dreams definitely aren't “realistic.” (And, I wouldn't have it any other way …)

Many people said that running a mile in 4 minutes wasn’t “realistic” however Roger Bannister proved that to be false. : )

Something else I should add is that sometimes people will try and “persuade” you to be “realistic” because they don't want you to have more success than them. (Sometimes people are like that.)

So I say screw being “realistic” and follow your dreams. After all, even The Beatles were rejected by Decca Records before becoming successful.

Interesting to see the different way people see and use the word 'realistic'. It's almost as if some people use the word 'realistic' to preempt or even cause their own failure. Perhaps the biggest problem is the disconnect between the words 'realistic' and 'work'.

Seriously, I don't think any goal is unrealistic if you are able and prepared to put in the necessary work.

Saying something like 'Well, I could never realistically expect to become a multi-millionaire' ... you are really saying 'I don't think I can become a multi-millionaire so I'm not even going to try'.
