7 Things I Do To Stay Happy and Motivated

Here you go:

1. I exercise almost daily, even if it's only running for 20 minutes.
2. I read self-help books and information that helps me move towards my goals.
3. I never watch/read the news and don't watch TV.
4. I have a zero tolerance policy for negative and cynical people. If they are negative or cynical, they are OUT.
5. I avoid gossips and rumors. Its always better to focus on your own stuff than tearing other people down.
6. I regularly go out and enjoy myself.

7. I'm highly organized. Chaos and disorder equals stress to me.

Hope it helps

I like number 3, never watch or read the news.

I don't understand why so many people are obsessed with the news. It's so negative and people seem to feed off it for some reason. I guess people love to see drama.

I am doing all of that except for #6. I am still having a hard time going out and enjoying myself. I spent the bulk of my life worrying about everything so I developed a lot of fears but recently I decided it was time for a change and I started making changes in my life.

Your step 1 was actually the last thing I added to my routine. I am overweight but shedding pounds since I started making lifestyle changes and you know what? The other day I was biking with my 6 year old and he said to me "mommy, you are getting good at biking you must be losing weight"

To me, it was the best thing he could have said to me because I felt like I was dying but hearing him say that positive thing to me reminded me that I am on the right path and I found the strength to keep up with him.

I am going to be adding step 6 in soon. As far as #8, I am pretty good about doing that but there is always room for improvement.

Avoid gossip and rumors. So important! Glad that one is on your list.

I have also found more focus by unsubscribing to a lot of email lists. Ones that I didn't need or read anyway, were just clogging up my inbox and distracting me.

Oh that is a good one. I actually read somewhere that unsubscribing from all of those lists is a really good thing. Removes the distraction and my tendency is to be distracted. I am an excellent starter but finishing is the hard part.

This is why as soon as I started to build something great I got myself a right hand guy. He keeps me focused and I too removed myself from almost all lists. I still kept some though so there is the occasional distraction but not nearly as bad as just a year ago.

Wow! I agree with all of the points you made! I try to follow those to a T as best I can. I try to always be positive and encourage others around me to do whatever it is that makes them happy. I feel my biggest motivations lately are reading self help books (Think and Grow Rich) daily exercise and music. Music has a way of making me get into my "zone." Nothing starts my day off better than a nice big cup of coffee and good music!

This was very helpful, I basically do the same things except for a minor few. At times I use to hate watching tv, but now, for little breaks I have with IM, I watch it in between. And really you don't watch the news? Do you at least read the newspaper? When I stopped watching tv for awhile, I didn't really know how to connect with the outside world. There was one point that I didn't even know about the Casey Anthony Trial so yeah I like to at least watch the news to stay updated.

Great post. As I read it I was agreeing with some items and mentally swapping some out for my own, so here's my list:

      1. Meditate and pray daily
      2. Express unconditional love for the people in my life (most often easier said than done. . .)
      3. Exercise daily and eat a clean, balanced healthy diet (with the occasional dark chocolate for extra happiness)
      4. Express gratitude to my Higher power
      5. Don't allow negativity to steal my joy
      6. Challenge myself to higher levels of achievement
      7. Read inspiring/ motivational /practical books & listen to wise/accomplished teachers
      8. Encourage, teach and mentor others to live in their greatness
      9. Live peacefully
      10. Give generously

      OK, so I was on a roll. . . ;-)

I also avoid watching/reading the news. I read good books instead.
I avoid conversations about complaints, injustice, calamities, and other similar things. I enjoy talking and listening with people always seeing opportunities and gratitude.

These two things really changed how I look into life. Yes the not so good things are still there, but it's our choice if we dwell on them. There are lot of things to be thankful for right now.

If I may, although I agree with your 7 steps, I think it's important to point out that you cannot avoid certain aspects and attributes of other people.

For example, I too try to stay away from negative vibes and people, however, most people tend to connect to negativity, but it's how you handle them when confronted with it that makes the difference.

In other words, if someone is being negative and spouting off about how bad things are, or how much of a downer life is, then it's our challenge to turn the tables and draw them away from such negativity. Of course, this isn't always possible, but when it is, then it can be as fulfilling as dwelling in the positive.

By using positive comments to build the conversation into a more inspiring and uplifting one can help the negative person to realize that their direction is not going to help anyone, but will rather contribute to the darker and downer side of life.

This can also be applied to gossip and rumors.

In other words, if you have the ability to turn it around and make such negativeness turn into positiveness, then that in itself brings a light and a refreshing step in the right direction.

Being self-righteous and condescending of negative people can also be negative in itself in that it only makes the other person worse off in attitude if you put your nose in the air and refuse to associate with them because of their vibe or comments.

If done in the right way, one can definitely make a difference by guiding a conversation to a much more positive outcome rather than just switching off and sanctimoniously rejecting them.

It's all a matter of presentation.

Lastly, I think it's important to know what's going on in the world. Avoiding the news can be a manifestation of the "ostrich syndrome". Ignoring what's going on around you can be to your detriment.

I understand that you are probably referring to the negative, but, unfortunately, negativity is all around us, and it's really our job to make an effort to change that mentality and project the positive by both our words and our actions.

Shutting it all out does not make it go away.

I'm not talking about being argumentative. My reference is to taking the stance of using tact and wisdom to counteract the negative around us.

Turning it around turns the negative into a postive--and that is the challenge.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[4600779].message }}

Your principles are pretty epic. There really is no wonder that you're so positive, or seem it at least. I really liked the 'I don't watch the TV and/or read the News' one. It's so good because there is so negativity on there. Sometimes a random comedy can be good and make you feel better which is always good, but people don't realise how much tv is affecting their lives, especially when they're working.
