What Do You Do When You Don't Reach Your Targets?

So after reading a lot of stuff in this forum, about a month ago I set myself some definite goals of where I want to be in 6 months time. This included a plan of the work I would have to do each month to achieve this and broken down into a daily/weekly to do list for August.

Then I had to have unplanned surgery; several of my sites were hacked and I transferred to a different hosting company. My 'to do' plan went to hell.

Now I am going into September with about a week's deficit of work to catch up on. What would you do? I could extend my 6 month plan by adding extra time to the end of it or I could try and catch up with the lost time over the following month. Either way it is difficult not to feel that I have failed already because I haven't achieved what I had planned by the end of this month.

    Setting goals is the only way to achieve success. IF you have life changing events that prevent you from meeting the deadline, alter your goal so that you can meet it from today onwards. It's always better to allow a small buffer when setting audacious goals.

    Sure you may feel terrible of losing one week, but don't take it too seriosly because it is not your fault that these things happens, the best thing you can do is to take as it is, its like you have planned a cammping day with your family and them its start to rain.

    Well maybe you already know the answer, go and stay with your plan and if you feel like theres something to change then do it. And don't get discouraged by these type of situations. Remember that by just planning you have +50% of the path for achieving your goal.

    When that happens to me, usually it's because the time frame for completing the goal was too aggressive. I'll reset the it, but in smaller increments.

    Sometimes we can bite off more than we can chew.

    congrats for being dedicated enough to set goals I have some too but not in pen and paper. But i hope my three month goal comes to fruit

    I definitely think there's a fine line between stretching yourself and biting off more than you can chew.

    I think if you don't reach your goal, decide if this was a goal you missed because of things within your control or not.

    For example, you can control if you created 100 backlinks to your website. But you can't control if Google put it at #1 for your keyword.

    I stopped focusing on targets a long time ago and started focusing on creating habits which will naturally get me the things I want. Takes away the "all or nothing" component and helps you to be present and persistent.

    Hi NicSennen

    I found this quite an interesting post because I too have set my goals for the next 6 months. Now obviously the aim of setting goals is to try and achieve them. But my view is even if you dont achieve them in the time frame.....your going to most likely be 90% of the way there. So in 6 months time your going to be 90% further down the road than you were when you started......if you understand? You can progress from this, set new goals for the next 6months and you are gradually going to be making progress.

    I think its important to set aggressive goals, because you can get just as easily unmotivated by always achieveing easy goals as you would not achieving your goals at all.

      great question-simple answer. NEVER change your goals, only change the time-frame to hit them. if you find it necessary to refine your goals to then break them down into subset goals.

      most home biz workers under estimate how many actions it takes to produce a result. they all quit "5 minutes before the miracle happens". the only difference between myself and many fellow "old-school" marketers? i made about 10,000 more phone calls than they did. i became a little shot that kept shooting.

      you want to be able to reach your goals while being stretched past of the point of being comfortable. if your goal is to be a millionaire in 2 years and you mess up and it takes 3 years, you simply live with it. Dr. Mike

    Create (or continue) your goal(s) and start again. (Then again, if you have to.) If "success" was something that happened first time around everyone would be wealthy.

    Think of it as something of a test. Life has a funny way of testing people to make sure they're serious about being "successful" and deserving of their goal(s).

    When I stopped setting goals and deadlines was when I started succeeding the most I ever had.

    I guess there are a lot smarter people than I because I see you have to set this goal and you have to visualize this and you have to have a mission statement.

    NEVER worked for me. I concentrated on doing the work and the results came.

    No way I could figure out when a goal should be done or how fast or even what the goal should be.

    I struggled for years and then I stopped worrying about goals and just WORKED! I am fortunate enough that I am actually now a multimillionaire. Not bragging just wanted to add some credibility to what I posted above.

    Ok truth be told I did set a goal of $55 per day but I never set a time when I wanted to be there.

    Cut your expenses to the bone
    Work you azz off
    The results will come


    But for many they think goal setting with deadlines etc is best for them and maybe it is

    A bend in the road is not the end in the road!

    It might have happened that you could not complete 1 week's time due to surgery

    you can rework on the goals for this month and try including the lost week's work into next 4 weeks

    My advice will be not to change the date, as that my step in procrastination

    Examine first where in the process you failed then try to make a better plan of how you can do it better. Just never ever think of giving up your goals just because you have failed but consider it as a challenge for you to exert more effort.

    Once i decide I cannot reach my goal with current strategy I just pour in about two to five times the budget for that goal. Than it works This is for SEO like BMR and UAW

    Hi Nic,
    I used to be like that...Freaking out because I didn't achieve my goal, feeling like a failure and so on...until

    Until I became congruent with what it was I was goaling for!

    It's true.

    I worked my but off for 20 years and built and lost 2 fortunes.
    Then when the Universe conspired with me to sort things out...eg my sister became unconscious and I became her carer, lost my business and everything else in the 2008 GFC, I had to stop and ponder.

    Then a series of events occurred that made me realize I had had my ladder of success up the wrong tree for the past 20 years!

    Not only were my goals out of whack, but my values had changed over that time and I never had reviewed them.

    So, if I'm not sounding schmik here, but could you test yourself to see if the things you want that your goals are based upon are really your souls true desire?

    If there is emotional charge around the outcome (I'm a failure, etc etc) that's a sure indication you are not congruent.
    You must think, feel and act all in alignment to relieve that stress.

    The circumstances that came into your life were not of your choosing and or forseeable, i certainly wouldn't see myself as a failure because of them. You can either extend your goal accordingly or push hard and see if you can't still succeed with what you targeted. There are days where i get nearly no results and there are some where i get almost a weeks worth of results. I know that's a small term example but if you keep putting in the effort you'll still get the reward in the end.

    You need to look back at your action plan and see what is wrong with it. Just do not give up because perseverance will make sure you achieve your goal.

    Plans are great, and we should all have them, but one thing to understand is that plans are conditional.

    In other words, plans are made as a guide, a challenge and a standard in which we strive.

    However, it's also fine to move the goal posts if need be.

    Plans aren't meant to be binding and non-moveable or unchangeable.

    Life has lots of bends in the road, and we have the ability to adjust our plans accordingly.

    If plans were like rules, we would soon tire of them.

    You have to be realistic about plans, and setting them too high, or making unrealistic goals can weaken the enthusiasm to achieve them and can render them useless.

    Picking 3 to 5 realistic and achievable goals is a good way to start in that you map out particular and immediate plans that you are able to reach. Your other list of goals and plans should be divided and categorized so that it's not too overwhelming, and it's best not to let your plans make liar out of you.

    I gave up on setting goals. I replaced them with aims, directions and mile markers and now I win every day. If I pass a mile marker - great. If I don't, at least I moved in my direction. Either way I win. A much happier existance.

    I try to find out the fault in my technique. If there is no fault then increase the volume of work to achieve the goal.Don't get puzzled do your work with full devotion you will get the success definitely.

    If you're new to setting goals, let it sink in. Don't start chasing hard goals right away. I promise you will start beating yourself up because of failures. You should set easy-medium goals first and then slightly raise them every time you succeed (it needs patience). It will feel good if you keep it up.

    When you reach a stable ground and you know yourself good enough - it's time to rock ... Then you should set goals which you can barely reach and a little higher (just to push yourself to grow).

    1. You analyze why you failed to reach your target.

    2. You ask yourself if knowing what you now know you still want to reach that target at all.

    3. If no, then you set a new goal/target.

    4. If yes, Then knowing what you now know you make a new plan to reach your target.

    5. You put your plan into action...

    6. repeat, repeat, repeat.
