Does NLP or Life Coaching work?

Have you had any NLP or Life Coaching?

What are your opinions related to NLP or Life Coaching?

If you've had NLP or coaching, in your opinion, did it work? Did you make more money? Was it value for money?

By the way, NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Actually it stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. I've heard Robbo speak on it. I saw some guy stand in a yoda suit and deliver a few hours on it at one of Kerny's seminars in SD. Never had anyone choach me in it but it's interesting to listen to people talk about it.

wouldn't count on NLP too much. To me it just seems too much micromanagement in your head.
Life coaching.. well, reading books definitely helps but only one one condition, if you apply the knowledge yourself

NLP is quite interesting, i read a lot about it years ago - i actually managed to quit smoking myself using some techniques. Did you scratch your nose when you read the top sentence? Probably not.more to read here

Life coaching worked well for me at the time I needed it. I agree that for life coaching to suceed you have to do the work that goes with it. Never tried NLP.

When you say that life coaching worked for you. Was it in a business or personal context? If business, could you put a dollar value to it, or ROI?

    Intresting topic..
I haven't undergone any life coaching or nlp.
I have however found myself more and more intrigued in "personal developement".. kind of similar I guess..

Focusing on ones current situation and goals has helped me in my business and personally to a certain extent.

NLP and life coaching are completely different ... keep that in mind.

People can use NLP in they're life coaching but not all life coaching is NLP.

I've never done any life coaching but I'm a certified practitioner of NLP.

NLP has a lot of uses, depending on what you're looking for.

It can help you think clearer, problem solve better, write better sales letters, help you integrate desirable traits of behavior ... just to name a few.

But it won't do you any good at all if you don't know what you want out of it...

Thanks for your reply James. Could you recommend any resources that combine NLP and sales letters because I'm working hard at the moment putting a letter together.

      Many thanks

The only course I know of is NLP copywriting by Harlan Kilstein.

But if you understand copywriting and understand NLP it shouldn't be hard to weave in.

Just take one element (presuppositions for example) and go back through your sales letter adding them in where applicable.

    Hi,

I have both received and delivered life coaching and NLP.

I think it's important to realise that not everyone means the same thing when they use these terms so if you're going to get into a relationship with someone offering either of these things it's critical that you establish that you're both talking the same language.

There is no 'right' version of NLP or Coaching - different people have taken both subjects on in different ways - the same as you could say about religions.

You might meet someone who has the same religion as you but find that they still have some fundamentally different ideas and beliefs about religion to you. Interpretation is what creates meaning.

My sister is also a life coach and my brother a therapist and NLPer so I even see differences just between us.

My sister is from the mindset of "coaching is about facilitating change and you do NOT give advice". This is one of the common approaches that Life Coaches have established but you will still find people who think coaching is where you get told what to do (as in 'football coach').

Also most coaches will say that you don't have to be an expert in the subject to be a good coach - especially when you look at something like sports psychology - It's unlikely that Tiger Woods will have a coach who is a better golfer than him (well, these days maybe not so much ), but he can still get great benefit from a coach because they are coaching him to be the best HE can be.

Then there's the difference between what the coaching/nlp community think coaching/nlp are - compared to what the ordinary person thinks they are.

The big thing about NLP is that it often gets used to support hypnosis and hypnosis also comes with its own baggage as far as perceptions and reality are concerned.

So many people who look into NLP are coming from having heard of it as "an influencing tool" in sales. This is NOTHING like what most NLPers would consider it to be.

It was designed to model successful people in helping others.

But where one person sees a way to influence someone to be happier and healthier - another person sees it as a way to control people. Therefore it's been abused by sales people trying to 'control' their audience in the way subliminal advertising used to be used.

So - the short answer is.........

ALL hypnosis, NLP, and coaching is SELF fulfilling.

They're all designed to help you give yourself the right mindset to allow you to achieve your goals.

Sure you can be hypnotised to something you weren't planning to do - but most coaches/NLPers would be looking for that to mean less negative things and more positive ones that support your goals.

So - find someone who is offering the same thing you're looking for.

I offer coaching but not to people who want to be told what their business should be - but that's what most IMers seem to want from coaching.

NLP is a very powerful tool that does wonders if you know how to use it properly. I suggest you really dive into the subject of nlp and how it works. Once you start using it on yourself you will appreciate you spent the time reading all about it... There is an ebook called the NLP toolbox you can get for really cheep that is a good place to start learning about nlp... or you can just google it if you do not want to spend any money.

My friend Charlie "Tremendous" Jones used to say "nothing works!"

    And he's right.

There are lots of tools that can help you at the right time and place (NLP is one of these), but you still have to do it yourself.

I don't think there's a 'one size fits all' solution. Language is so important, because the words we use have a lot to do with what kinds of thoughts are going through our minds. I think NLP can give us an idea of where to start. Life coaching can help us by hearing things in an objective manner.

I use a combination of techniques and what worked yesterday won't always work tomorrow.

As has already been stated, life coaching can be great, if a person is ready and puts forth consistent effort toward their goals. I've been helped by many coaches along the way.

I also coach and you'd be surprised how many people have dreams of what they want but when it comes right down to it, aren't willing to put forth any real effort toward them. Some do.

In my own opinion, It is better to have a life coach since they can rate your weakness and strength. I do have Life Coach and he helped me a lot. I made more money than before but our agreement is he gets commission in my business. He also helped me to improve my dating skills and other aspect in life. He is an Australian life coach and he is very cool. He is Adrian Cahill. This guy might help you. you can also read his blogs (http://adriancahill.com/nlp-and-coaching/) in different categories.

ABSOLUTELY! NLP, as well as hynotherapy are EXTREMELY valuable techniques that have enabled me to change my mind-set. This change in mind-set has enabled my lifestyle to progress from "stressed out and financially worried" to one that today is very desired by others and funded by recurring income streams!

  • Life coaching I cannot vouche for as it is not something I know about but I know that it is highly varied, and may work with one coach but not with another. HOwever as for NLP coaching and counselling I can vouche for that, as I use it myself. And to see the effects in action you can watch this video:

Coaching is all about asking skillful questions for you to delve within yourself, to help you come up with new solutions to your problems. These skillful questions will help stretch your current thinking to come up with ideas you may not have considered yet.

Andyhenry mentioned above the NLP is a modelling tool, to help replicate success. It does this through looking at the structure of how we think and make meaning of the world, and the underlying thinking that helps someone create results. A good place to start is to look at the "Pre-suppositions of NLP" to get an idea of how it approaches people.

As a very rough example, say you want to exercise more.

A Coach would ask questions such as , What is more?? What is stopping you?? What would need to happen for you to find yourself exercising more?? What do you do to yourself in those moments that makes you choose not too???

An NLP'er may ask, when you think about exercising, is it a picture, or a sound?? Is it big or small?? Moving or still?? Do you say something to yourself?? What if we change the picture from Small to panoramic?? When you think about Exercising do you see a picture of working hard, then get that sore feeling in your legs, then say to yourself "Not today"?? Whats something you do easily, and what sequence do you do to do that??

Can these approaches overlap?? Of course they do. If you are looking for greater insight into how you make meaning out of the world which leads to your actions, look at NLP. If you are wanting something to stretch your current thinking a bit, then standard coaching will do that.

    Cheers

    Josh

My personal experience is from both. But so called "Life Coaching" was the life-changing thing for me some years ago. NLP in a way followed automatically without any courses or actual practice, it just kind of happens as a by-product.

My opinion is, that people see all kind of personal development to be somehow difficult, too much work or nonsense. In my experience, when you find your right place in this life (with or without a coach), your right path to take, your purpose what you have to give to this world and other people, everything becomes quite easy and natural to achieve. Stepping out of your comfort zone and action towards the right (and most probably totally new) direction is of course necessary. For some reason people underestimate their abilities and power within to change their lives... unfortunately most people search for solutions only outside of themselves when they only can be found within. And that's where we, the coaches step in to help; to give a gentle nudge in the right direction.
