I love that acronym, thanks for sharing.

Fear is something you must overcome if whatever you are afraid of won't kill you and if there's a good benefit of overcoming it.

A wise man once said,"The opposite of love is not hate, it's fear". I've wondered about that comment and I believe that it's generally true. However, we do tend to have fear, although often not noticeable until a crisis is reached, of not only what is unknown but what is expected. I'll give you an example: Let's say I need to call someone who I do not know and who is not expecting my call. I already have an anticipation that I may be rejected and I don't want that. Furthermore, given time to think about it I will exaggerate the potential rejection and imagine it to be much worse that anything I have ever experienced. This is because I have had rejection, as we all have, and it hurts and also makes us "feel" pain or discomfort. We don't want that.

I remember living during the time of the cold war and being told that Americans live in "fear" of the bomb. I don't think I ever met anyone who really was afraid of the bomb, it just made good copy and helped the government build up the military. I can say that I am not afraid of a lion as I sit comfortably at my computer, but if I was face to face with one and had no defense, I should think I would experience fear of the most serious kind.

There no doubt about it fear can be real, but I think in our present day style of living we have to go back to what FDR said," So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself--nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.

I know we usually hear FEAR standing for False Evidence Appearing Real... But what happens when the Evidence isn’t False? What do you do when it’s true evidence and it appears real… because it is real.

Here's something I learned from Robert Kiyosaki, that makes it a little easier to use FEAR to propel you to new heights. Robert said he looked at FEAR from the perspective of Fail Early And Responsibly. By using this definition and looking at FEAR from this perspective you can not only get yourself into action mode, but also get FEAR to thrust you towards success.

He first says Fail Early. You may hear it different ways, fail quick or fail as fast as possible. It all means the same thing. You can’t be afraid to fail. At least not if you want to be successful at something. Successful people know they must fail, in order to succeed. Jim Rohn says if you do something often enough, a pattern will appear. So if you’re afraid to do something because you don’t know how its going to work out, you have to start doing it and keep doing it until the pattern appears. Or look at other people’s patterns of doing that thing. Yours may be a little different, but you can get an idea from studying what others have done. Robert said he knew from history that 8 out of 10 businesses failed. His first 2 failed, but the 3rd made him wildly successful. His goal was to just get to 10 as fast as possible. The true evidence showed that 2 would succeed. So he Failed Early, quickly, as fast as possible. So take your FEAR of doing whatever it is you’re afraid to do because you might fail at it and know that you should just HURRY UP AND FAIL.

But the purpose of Failing Early is not just to go out and Fail at a bunch of stuff. Remember the second part, And Responsibly. Failing Responsibly means to learn from your failures. Learn what not to do again. Sometimes its just as important, if not more, as learning what to do. You should learn from all your experiences, successes and failures. Focus on, remember, and learn from your successes. Learn from then forget about your failures… after you’ve learned from them. The past is the past, success or failure. No success or failure from the past itself can help you in the present. Only the lessons you’ve learned and the wisdom you’ve gained from past successes and failures can truly help you in the present. So I guess in addition to Failing Responsibly you should Succeed Responsibly as well. Learn from both experiences. The more you fail, the more you’ll succeed as long as you’re learning along the way. Responsibly is the key and no one can learn the lessons or gain the wisdom for you.

So if you have a Fear of Failure, remember to Fail Early And Responsibly. Get moving, take action and go do something quick, as fast as possible. But learn from every experience you have. If you never do anything and never learn anything, you’ll never get to the success you’re after that has you scared to fail in the first place.

I’m headed off to go FAIL at something.

The fear of failure can be quite overwhelming, as everyone deals with failures and stress differently. It is indeed how you deal with these challenges, what actions you take to get there, and learn from them that can mean the difference of staying where you are, or propelling you into the future, and expanding and surpassing your past limitations. Thank you all for sharing, great, helpful perspectives.

This is what I think is the real meaning of fear. It explains why we fear certain things and how fear is used for our "protection." I hope you enjoy this.
I once heard that “you fear what you do not know.” I strongly oppose this because humans don't want to fear anything. In this, humans fear the thought of fear. So if someone fears fear than they must not know fear if fear is something you do not know. So in opposition, I believe fear is something you know too much of. For example: A man walks through an alley at night not knowing of heathens, thugs, or things that go bump in the night and he doesn't fear the alley, but another man walks through the same alley knowing of all of these evils and he fears every step in that alley.

People can learn everything to prepare themselves for what not to fear, but the more you know the more you have to fear. Not one man from the beginning of humanity to the end can say that he doesn't fear a thing, unless he were completely ignorant to danger, death, pain, loss, etc. (pretty much the conditions of life). If someone did manage to lack fear for themself then they will have fear due to love of a spouse, family member, country, etc., because fear is not only rooted from evil but from love, or in better words, the loss of love.

Fear is a type of “protection” for the human body. It learns from experiences. It could be experiences that the person had themself or experiences the person saw happen on T.V., internet, or to someone they knew, therefore, backing up my statement that “fear is something you know too much of.” Learning to fear the certain thing that happened, that person is “protected” from it in the future . . . by fear.

So in conclusion, fear is one of the many traits of mankind that is a “protection” device for the human body. It is stemmed from the knowledge of any type of evil, since any type of evil can cause pain on some level, and from the knowledge of losing someone you love.

I do enjoy the saying about fear ... False Evidence Appearing Real... but there is one problem with it... we have two types of fear... healthy fear and unhealthy fear.

With healthy fear the evidence is very real.

Healthy fear is the mechanism that will shout at you to get off the street to avoid being run over by oncoming traffic.

When it comes to this type of fear, you will find that the action it urges you to take, the internal monologue you will experience, is short, to the point and highly efficient.

You aren't going to stand in the middle of the street and debate whether or not getting off the road is the best course of action when faced with speeding cars. Nor are you going to stand there and wonder which direction you should move in.

In fact, you probably won't even get as far as having an internal talk since your body will react long before you make a conscious decision to move. This is the level of efficiency of healthy fear.

You will generally find that healthy fear is all about doing what can be done in the present, about informing you of real and immediate dangers and about protecting you and guiding you.

Unhealthy fear is all about exaggeration and even inventing threats; it's about the need to be in control and about everything that could possibly go wrong in ten minutes time, tomorrow, next week or next year.

Unhealthy fear chatters at you all day long. It makes mountains out of molehills and even if there's absolutely no threat present, it makes sure to invent one.

It will talk to you all day long, pointing out even the tiniest things that could become threats, real or perceived.

This is the fear that will lead you into depression because your perception of yourself is that you have not lived up to your full potential.

Unhealthy fear is False Evidence Appearing Real!

Sadly, our unhealthy fears talk much louder and are much more extreme than our healthy fears and most of us have a tendency to put them in charge of our lives.

What's even worse is that most of us have convinced ourselves that our unhealthy fear is there to help us. It's there to "help" stop us from making mistakes that we might regret later.

I think nowadays we're in this constant state of fear because of our lifestyles. We have our 'fight or flight' response activated. FDR's quote is perfect because without stepping through the fear, I don't think we would progress forward.

Fear is something that everyone deals with, but it is usually ungrounded or at least very exaggerated. My way of dealing with it is usually to think of the worst case scenario, then look at how easy it really would be to overcome it.

For example, Worst case scenario with my husband and my business is that it could completely fail and drive us to bankruptcy. If that happened, we could temporarily move in with relatives, possibly take on temp or part-time jobs, and rebuild the business from the beginning. In the end, we would be fine. It would really not be the end of the world.

I've been doing this with personal fears for years. To realize that there is little to no grounding for your fears is a liberating feeling. However on the flip side, Rational caution is wise to an extent. If something seems suspicious, don't jump into it just because "what's the worst that can happen".

On a side note to David Tampien, I've spent a lot of time over the years in Moses Lake (My uncle lives there and I've lived there for short stints twice), so it's nice to see someone else who even knows where it is!
