Growth Requires a Level Of Discomfort: True or False

You hear a lot about comfort zone. For example, finding your comfort zone or staying in your comfort zone, etc.

That has its place I guess, but I've found growth requires a level of discomfort.

In most cases if you're comfortable Beware!

Historically, some of the most progressive times came through discomfort, wars, deprressions and recessions. I'm not sure why, but that's the facts.

Personally speaking as I look back, my greatest growth financially and mentally came when I stepped out of my comfort zone.

- Now, if something doesn't scare me a little, I don't want to do it.
- If it's not edgy or half crazy I'm not interested.
- If it doesn't force the A game out of me, I lose my enthusiasm.

But if it's something "the comfortable, comformist, follow-the-crowd people find weird, risky or crazy" - YUREKA! That's when I find I've grown the most financially and psychologically from - if I do it. So, for now I'll stick with that plan until it stops working.

I'm aware everyone is looking for push button or flip the switch wealth and guaranteed plans
in-a-box. So, I realize my story is not every ones story, but that's my experience.

What's your story? Is this true in your experience, false or something in between?

I have found throughout my life that the biggest progresses flourished from discomfort and past failures. It is the will to get out of the disconfort zone from where you get the motivation to move on. The results are rewarding, but it takes a big move to achieve success.

You're right, I've had some of my most rewarding and sometims scariest moments, while I was in those "Gut Check" moments. I took me many years to learn how to manage myself while going through them.

Most definitely, growth and development (both personal and business) requires you to move out of you're comfort zone and not only that but it also calls for sacrifice at times, something that can cause people great discomfort which is why it is something that most are simply not prepared to do.

That a good point, especially the part about preparation. Many people don't prepare themselves. That's often the difference in most cases, preparation. People who are not prepared, find the discomfort of growth too much to tolerate.

I agree I've always found my biggest successes to come after times of struggle or discomfort. You've got to work and sacrifice to reach the promised land

It's one of the things I think that is holding me back...when I feel that 'gut' feeling, I get scared and I end up wondering how to trust that intuition...am I alone in second guessing myself?

        divingfenix,
You're not alone in second guessing yourself, most people have done it, if they're honest. The only solution comes from experience, facing the fears head and being open new ideas.

I have to agree with this. Once you get to a certain comfort level in life it is hard to do anything else because your risks may have less reward than what you currently have.

It's a big part of why I work at a job vs for myself. I would be hard pressed to replace my income and work at the same level of effort. Simply put what I have is good so even if other stuff was better I don't do it because it owuldn't be better for years.

I also agree with everyone. If you are too comfortable then you will be less prone to take risks. Risks are essential to be successful. However, not all risks are created equal. You must take calculated risks by weighing all the options in your current life.

That being said, it isn't a bad thing to be comfortable. Once you find comfort you must be willing to take another risk to expand your business and insight.

The path to success is long and winding, but in the end it is worth it.

The reason being is because when you are in the "confort zone" you get distracted, since things seems easier, and you forget about your problem and for what you are fighting for. Since you forget your problem, you forget the purpose.

If one is comfortable, in time they would show complacency. And once one get complacent then that one will just be stagnant. I do agree that in order to grow more, we should get out of our comfort zone and discover new endeavors.

They say if you do the same things over and over and expect different results, that's insanity. I recently read this quote (don't know who it's from) If you want something you never had, do something you never did.

So to me, the best thing you can do is to do out on that limb. I worked at a steel mill for 13 years. When I went into my boss's office to tell him I was quitting to give myself time to write a book (which got published) and pursue my dream of becoming a writer, he said "Rob are you sure you know what you are doing?" and I replied, "no, but I know I have to do something other than this."

To be totally honest sometimes I wish I would have stayed in the rat race, but most times I am really glad I jumped out.
