Reverse engineering discover what your long term goals are then break those down into small short ones, then you start from there

for example lets say you want to make 50k a year break that down into a month $4,166 a month the break that down into weeks $1,042 then break that down into days $150 a day

now i have something I can work towards all i would have to do is make $150 a day and trust me when you first do it or accomplish your short term goal you will feel great about yourself and would want to do it again and again. after a while you would want to scale it up and start to try making 300 a day and so forth

Mate if you are so lazy you need us to tell you which goals to set, I'd say internet marketing is really not for you.

    C'mon ...

Choose a number of money you want to have a year from now, figure out a plan to get there, and start doing it. That's the way to get it done.

I like to make mine S.M.A.R.T Goals. Here is what the acronym stands for:

    (S)pecific
    (M)easureable
    (A)ttainable
    (R)ealistic
    (T)imely

Your goal should be specific and you should form some type of measurable scale to see how well you are trending towards the goal. It should be attainable and realistic so you can do it in a reasonable time frame.

Here is a post that explains a little more: Creating S.M.A.R.T. Goals

@charttraderz - Give the guy a break! This is the "Success, Power, and Self-Improvement" section of the forum. You just joined the forum and are already telling other members that they are lazy and that they should give up on IM. Wow!

I think smart goals can be useful. I prefer making almost unreachable and challenging goals. In doing so, it motivates me even more to take action in an allotted time period.

I say Big long term goals broken down in chunks of regular short term goals. When you achieve your daily small goals, it automatically takes you to big long term goal. Hope that helps....

The most important ingredient in setting a goal, either long term or short term, is to set a plan. Everything should start with a plan, and from that plan, put that into action and from that action, it will generate results. The results then can be evaluated as it is to proceed in what have been done or change for the improvement. And I really agree with the acronym of SMART as what warrior 88ninjas had stated, as what you have to do should be specific to really set your mind on a specific target; measurable, that is what you will do can be attained and can be identify on what to do and how to do it; attainable, that is your goal can be attained in a definite time frame and is possible to reached; realistic, we need to set our goal that can be attained, I mean, in the real world. We cannot set a goal like earning $5000 for the next day since you start working for your IM business; and lastly, timely, that is, to set your time and the time that your work/niche/or method are demanded in the IM business.
Think SMART, Do SMART and Be SMART.

The SMART goals brought up by 88 are very important. Measurable and attainable results are key. Too many people set unrealistic goals and then get discouraged.

I like "Making a Living Without a Job" by Barbara Winter. She takes you through the process of figuring out what you can do and how you can do it. Work is involved in that book, filling out worksheets and doing a realistic self evaluation. It's very revealing.

At the moment I am recovering from illness so not doing a lot of my usual work but when I am ready to go will switch it on again, its a great tool.

I agree with Judy, it's the short term goals that make the habit. If you have organized mini 'goals' and actually achieve them, then going for the bigger goals will not be a problem for you

Goal setting is really important. You have to set a big long term goal which is the ultimate goal. And then, set some short term goals to help you achieve the ultimate goal.

Like for an example, you want to earn 1 million in 10 years. Set some small goals like getting $50 per day or something like that. It is more fun to do this instead of just targeting your high targeted ultimate goal.

I agree with everyone here that goal setting is really important, but I think it's also important to bear in mind that you must feel good about the goals you are setting and relax and have fun with them.

What many people don't realise is that sometimes the way in which they go about goal setting actually prevents them from achieving their goals because rhe picture the goal as something that outside of their current reality and therefore it stays that way.

I recently wrote an article on the subject which has been published in evolution ezine. If you care to take a look, it may put things into better perspective:

If you encounter barriers that seem like they might impede your progress, don't give up on your goals. Instead, modify them to meet your current situation. However, if a particular goal becomes something that is no longer important to you, then you should be open to letting it go. That will allow you to put your energy into pursuing goals that are important to you.

You need to have short, long term and super long term goals.

Have a long term goal for, say you need to make a product in two months or reach certain income target with your campaigns.

For short term have a list of tasks you need to get done for the week and the next day.

I find long term goals overwhelming if I don't break them down into bite sized goals for the week and the next day. It helps to get work done in a focused and organized way.

Super long term goals would be chilling on a beach, yacht or a remote location without having to refresh the earnings page every few seconds!

You should have both long and short terms. Make long term goals and break the down in several short term goals and do something about the goal each day. So you are moving in your long term direction by making your short term goals everyday....

Great information here! After you set your goals you need to determine what type of work you will need to do in order to achieve your goal. You will have to pay some type of price in return for getting what you want. Once you identify the work that needs to be done, you will need to develop a routine. Consistent work habits are the key to goal achievement. Setting the goal is just the beginning. You need to develop daily work habits which lead to the accomplishment of your goal. These work habits are goals within the goal.

You should have 1 single MAJOR life purpose, and then a bunch of other mini goals. Just remember that these mini goals should only be allowed if they add to your happiness or in same way they help you get closer to your single major life purpose.

If you want to read more about this go to amazon and pick up some books by napoleon hill.

There's one magic ingredient that has to be in place for us to achieve our goals. That is emotion. Emotion controls our thinking. Some people get very emotional (passionate) when they think about the goals; these are likely to be the high achievers. Others need to work on this a little. A goal must be exciting if we are to be driven towards it. We must not just think it, we have to feel it too.

How do you build the emotion? Explore in depth what your goal means to you. Take a little time to imagine you have it nailed, then, explore how you feel? What does your life look like? What have you become?

With passion and emotion fueling your goal, you will be unstoppable.

I don't agree that just because he was asking for advice on how and what to set goals for means he shouldn't be in internet marketing. My husband is self taught and needed a place to start too. He is very successful now and I am now doing my own internet marketing.

On top of short, medium, and long term goals it may be best if they all relate to the same goal.

EX: Major goal of starting a business.

Short term: File for INC. or sole propriety
Medium Term: Research potential business franchise
Long Term: Start business and advertise

Hi Jay, there are several keys to setting goals, SMART is just one of them. The biggest part of any goal setting process is setting goals in a way that you are congruent with (getting the mindset right is very important)

Having studied and applied many mindset systems I've created a Goal Achievement System using NLP which I will gladly give you access to.

Just PM me with an email address so that I can set up a username and you can download the guide & audios.

      Hi there J Cohen

Right now J, it seems you don't quite know what you want to achieve or set as a goal. So maybe just consider what you want and break that down into a goal.

Do you want an easier life, working less hours, more time with family, more money, more money to do ...? etc. Think first about what you want, and then structure a goal accordingly.

Right now I'm working on the free coaching element of a new goal setting product that will be part of the launch so look out for that as that will help even if you don't buy the product at the end.

My quick advice here would be to put your goal in writing. Ask yourself the following questions:

What difference will this goal make to my life
What will I do when I've succeeded that I cannot/dont do know
What resources do I still need to succeed
How will I know when I am on target
Do I beleive that I can/will be successful

For now though an excellent way to get your unconscious on board with your goal, is to visualise yourself already having achieved it. You've probably heard about atheletes doing this and Nasa having studied this to the nth degree and it works!! But its not just athletes who use this strategy, every single achievement is first born as an idea in the mind and within the mind we create pictures, often moving images - so create your own movie of your life when you are successful.

I've got so many books on this subject but one that is simple and easy to follow is by Joe Vitale. He has a nice book called the Attractor Factor which is a manual and can help in goal setting. What I mentioned here is the nuts and bolts of it though, eg decided first what you want, then work out the goals that need to be set and get started that way.

I'm about to ask a question on here about goals in order to guage the types of things that people will be wanting to change about their lives or achieve next year. Please do come and add your comments about your goals - thanks
