Mental Math, Learning Improvement programs

What do you guys think about these "learn to do math mentally and easily without a calculator" type learning programs and other type programs, like speed reading?

Has anyone actually tried this stuff and have seen significant improvement over former skills?

Some of these mental math stuff looks to be "tricks"..., which seem to have many more processes than the actual long hand , standard way of doing math.

Are math shortcuts simply gimmicks?

And what about speed reading, I mean, really, does it REALLY work in comprehension and retaining what was read?

Like to hear some honest opinions, you know, no fake testimonies from people with compensatory agendas.

Since all learning requires language , either from print, auditory or visual, what is the best, easiest, clearest English mastery course that you know of?

I read somewhere that once mastery of the language and vocabulary becomes almost without thought, that learning , absorbing and retention increases dramatically, as well as thought processes and other intangible hidden talents.

Since thought requires words, words are language.

I would rather have opinions from people who actually got into a program or home study program at some point before quitting or finishing the course, thanks.

I have also noticed that people with certain skills and gifts cannot necessarily teach "how" they can do it, though they deem themselves to be a teacher.

Some are better off as consultants to others who have attained a certain skill level rather than teach beginners or have the ability to assist someone to mine out buried or latent talents, gifts or predisposition of certain abilities, or form new skills to a certain level of mastery.

A first grade teacher and a professor simply have different skill sets and abilities to relay information to a certain level of clarity.

Just because someone is highly skilled and smart, does not mean they are qualified to teach, which I think, adds to the confusion of WHO is the competent teacher enough to get a student of some discipline to not only a goal of certain mastery but of identifying their own "way" or vision to add an additional uniqueness or direction, view into a discipline that is beneficial for themselves and others, whether it be an easier, advanced way of implementation or more clarity in teaching it, especially a complex discipline, say , engineering, for example.
