Remembering Your Big Rocks

Going along with some other posts that have talked about time management, being happy, and staying focused, I thought I'd post this here as just another great way to look at how you can manage your life better.

If you have never heard of the rocks in the bucket story, definitely take some time to read this. It has truly helped me to put things into perspective and manage my time much more efficiently.

The Rocks in the Bucket

Alright, so imagine that you have an empty bucket.

Fill that bucket up with big rocks. Is the bucket full?

Well, try filling that same bucket up with small pebbles now. The pebbles fill in the gaps of the big rocks. Now is the bucket full?

Nope. Add sand to your bucket. The sand fills in the gaps from the small pebbles and big rocks. So...

Is your bucket full with the big rocks, small pebbles, and sand?

Think again... you can still add water to the bucket.

Now your bucket is completely full.

So what exactly is the point?

Well, the bucket represents your life.

The big rocks should represent the most important aspects and tasks of your life. Perhaps this is your child's soccer game. Perhaps this is a big business project. Perhaps a holiday or birthday.

The small pebbles are important tasks, but not as important as your big rocks. An example might be paying your bills, or visiting with friends.

The sand represents smaller, less important tasks. Maybe laundry or house cleaning falls into this category.

The water represents everything else. I'd put things like reorganizing my pantry, or cleaning out my refrigerator into this category. :p

Now... if you were to fill your bucket up with water first, would you be able to add the sand, pebbles, or most importantly, the big rocks?

Heck no.

Even if you filled your bucket up with the sand and small pebbles first, there would be no room for your big rocks.

So, the point is this...

Fill your time up with the big rocks first. Always make time for the most important, highest priorities of your life. You will find that it is easy to fit in the rest of the less important tasks.

Basically, don't focus on the smaller, less important aspects of your life that can waste a lot of time, otherwise you may find yourself regretting having missed those big rock opportunities.

As you think about your day, week, or month ahead, what are YOUR big rocks?
