Facts Tell, Stories Sell

There is a long time saying in sales that goes: "Facts tell, stories sell."

Become a good story teller and you will be a much better saleman.

Also, remember, people buy from emotion not from intellect.

You get an emotional response from telling stories, expecially your own personally stories.

Emotions sell yet, details kill emotions.

Most people buy from emotion and then figure out how it will work afterwards.

So paying attention to your own emotions and getting an emotional response in people will aid in your success.

But it must be genuine.

Agreed....That's been a problem for me for years in sales. I'm to much Statistics and not enough Emotion. Hard to transfer onto online marketing as well.

Yes, I am quite analytical myself and I laugh when I think about my first offline business so many years ago and how I went over so much for my clients.

I realized real fast that I had to make money (since I spend my life savings to open my business back then).

So I had a very honest friend listen in on some consultations for new clients and he told me exactly what I was doing wrong.

It was hard for me at first but I HAD to make money and so I got it down to really going over their problem, how I could relate because I had that same problem too and how I can now solve that problem.

My conversion rate went from abut 10% to a whopping 90% and stayed like that as I opened locations coast to coast.

    This is so much true.

From my experience, I found that it was and probably it is still a point of improvement for me. Especially in the beginning. When it is so important to land your first client and you do not have any referrals and trust. It simply sits in your head.

I would like to hope that I have improved since then and more relaxed now. But still: I am working on it.

I recall now that I even took one of my friends who was "charming" and relaxed to one of my first meetings with a client. And it worked. And he told me similar things that I need to be more relaxed and just tell some stories to break the barrier...

So I agree with you completly and hope that this thread will help many of us to improve our approaches to land clients.

But 90% conversion rate - wow! Awesome!

People want to imagine themselves in a place, or very wealthy, or hanging out with cool people, etc. It is triggering their imagination that ultimately will get that sale. It is funny how something like the written word can transport people into a whole other area of their lives.

Compelling stories is really where it is at. This is also why honest reviews are the reviews that result in the most sales. If you can come across as actually have used the product then you are going to get the credibly to sell the product. People just do not seem to be able to connect these dots as they build myriads of niche websites reviewing products that they have only glimpsed at.

Storytelling is truly where it is at but this is a skill that takes some time to master. However, that time is very well spent.

      Thanks,

      Richard

Storytelling can be good as long as its honest and sincere. I feel as though some marketers can get a bit carried away. If someone is credible to tell it that makes it more believable and more honest too.

I definitely agree that stories sell.

That's why gary halbert was such a successful copywriter, because towards the mid/end of his life he would write copy based around stories and he used techniques to build suspense that he learned from his favorite fiction writers and novels.
