i'll actually go against the grain and say that I am not inspired by people, rather I am inspired by their actions. I think idolizing people can end in disaster if you cannot match their success. On the other hand, if you idolize their success, that can inspire you to do the same (at least it does for me!)

One thing I do is carry a big stack of note cards in my back pocket. On each note card is a quote or two from my heroes, ranging from Lincoln to Gandhi to Napoleon to Da Vinci. Whenever I'm bored or challenged or excited I'll pull them out and read some lines, and it always gives me a huge boost of inspiration. I don't even know where I got the idea, I just was kind of procrastinating and got carried away with it.

    In no particular order:

1 - Napoleon Bonaparte: Napoleon lead France from revolution to economic prosperity, and spread the revolutionary liberal ideals across Europe. While his vision of a United States of Europe was never achieved, the seeds had been engendered and would erupt across the continent throughout the upcoming centuries. For his enormous amount of audacity, ambition, and vision to lead. ("Take time to deliberate, but when the time for action has arrive, stop thinking and go in.")

2 - Benjamin Franklin: So many achievements to list, I don't even think it's possible. An exploratory inventor that created the Franklin stove, a scientist that made huge leaps of knowledge in electricity, an author that moved Philadelphia when he was only a teenager, a statesman that symbolically turned away from his one-time second home of England and joined the rebel cause, and his professional philandering skills. For his triumph over odds to rise from rags and reach riches, but more importantly his altruistic sentiment and contribution in numerable fields.("Energy and Persistence conquer all things.")

3 - Thomas Jefferson: JFK may have said it best about TJ when he toasted over dinner at the White House: "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered at the White House - with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." Similar to Franklin in his vast knowledge and achievement in numerous fields, he is also responsible for the sentiment of civil liberties and freedom in the U.S.A. ("Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate an define you.")

4 - Leonardo Da Vinci: The king of all Renaissance men, Da Vinci accomplished almost unbelievable feats. Even though living in a time when life was cheap and Italy was torn by war, Da Vinci was able to paint the greatest masterpieces, build the first robot, imagine man's flight, envision armored cars, and discover illnesses that wouldn't be fully understood until the 20th century. ("I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.")

5 - Abraham Lincoln : Lincoln was simply a tremendous human being. His never-ending tolerance and understanding, even when faced with the most bitter enemy the US has ever faced, marked him as a man of incredible moral depth and perhaps one of the primer rulers of all time. ("You can have anything you want--if you want it badly enough. You can be anything you want to be, do anything you set out do accomplish if you hold to that desire with singleness of purpose.")

6 - Theodore Roosevelt : I consider him a polymath in his own right, considering he was fluent in 9 languages, authored 16 books, was a cowboy, a politician, a soldier, a botanist, and still had other fields he had explored as well! TR was someone with an intensely exuberant personality and strong sense of character and honor. He has been posthumously awarded the medal of honor for his actions in Cuba, and was a maverick progressive(the first) who lead ranks of men towards a new political direction. ("Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.")

7 - Winston Churchill: I wish I knew more about Churchill, and one day will. What I do know is that when the world cowered and readily bowed to the Nazi ranks, Churchill lead Britain in defiance. His indefatigable courage even in the face of seeming certain defeat should be an eternal inspiration for us all.("Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.")

8 - Richard Branson: Love this man. With a adventurous and optimistic attitude he was able to overcome dyslexia and horrible student ratings to become the primer business man of the U.K. His exuberance for life and endless love for his fellow man is amazing. ("I don't see work as work and play as play. It's all living")

9 - Steve Jobs: His ability to spur technological innovation was impressive, his incorporation of all life into tech amazing, but his incredible passion and enthusiasm for products was towering. He made a big dent in the universe, and created the age of technology we enjoy so much today. ("We don't get a change to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life.")

10 - Nelson Mandela: Mandela was a critic of the unequal South African society he lived in, and for that his rebellion he spent 27 years of his life holed up in prison. Instead of pitying his situation or declaring his hugely difficult cause impossible, he persevered and ultimately lead South Africa to end apartheid. His perseverance against impossible odds and undying commitment to an ideal South Africa are amazing.("The greatest glory lies not in never failing, but in rising every time we fail")

11 - Martin Luther King Jr.: MLK took Gandhi's playbook and lead a civil rights movement that eradicated the segregation and oppression incurred on African Americans for centuries in North America. Though other leaders like Malcom X called for armed rebellion, and the Southern culture of the time pushed abusively back at the peaceful protestors, MLK persevered. His dream of an integrated and opportunity equal America became a reality through his convictions and that which he instilled in others.("Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.")

12 - Gandhi: Gandhi is the king of unarmed protest, arguably the first non-violent revolutionary. He achieved something most didn't believe was possible without bloodshed and war, a peaceful movement that arouse the best in the Indian people and freed them from the long-time shackles of the British Empire.("Be the change you want to see in the world."

I would say my idols are those who were driven, often to the point of obsession, with their truest loves. The people whose passions filled their days and nights, whose resultant outputs were so numerous and glorious so as to make them unforgettable. Frank Zappa, actually, comes to mind as a brilliant example of this trait. I'll throw out Hitchens too, as my admiration for him is topical and relevant considering his recent passing.

I suppose your could say I love great artists as a whole (Shakespeare and Stravinsky come to mind), but certain characters seem to stick out for whatever highly personal and unique etching they have carved into my life. They may have been burning the candle at both ends, but ah, it gave (and still gives) a lovely light.

Theodore Roosevelt - best example of what a president should beAnyone who graduates from extremely difficult military schools like Ranger school or BUDS. Talk about focus and determination.
