5 Things To Do Every Day For Success

I'm going to let you in on the secrets of my success.

Well, not all of them--
but enough to show you the foundation I build on every day.

1. Wake up early. For the next week, get up a half an hour earlier that you normally do--and get going. If you get a few more things done, then get up even earlier the next week. Early in the morning is a great time to get work done because most of your associates have not started emailing, tweeting, IMing, or posting yet.

2. Read the headlines and watch the news. Not only should you know what is going on in the world, you will also be the first to recognize opportunities (if you followed #1) for you and your business--long before the competition has even had their first cup of coffee.

3. Send something to one person who can hire you or buy your product--something you promised to follow-up with, a quick email with a link to something relevant or a "Hey, just checking in to see how thing are going" email.

4. Touch base with an old friend or associate you haven't talked to in ages. Ask how they are, what are they working on and ask or suggest how you might help. You'll make their day.

5. Write a handwritten note to someone. Seriously. It is a lost art and makes quite an impression. There is always someone you can send a thank you note to--or you aren't doing things correctly.

A simple yet highly effective list. Try all five every weekday for a month. Then, tell me I'm right. If I'm wrong, I'll buy you a cup of coffee. When you finally wake up ...

    Hehe...

that's a great, motivating post - but here's my view on it:

    1. I'm not a morning kind of guy. I don't get anything done in the morning. So I rather sleep long - and work at night.

    2. I know more and more people who don't follow the news at all. Why? Because it's full of negative crap. Negative thoughts rarely get you in a positive mood to do positive things.

    3. Agreed with that, but that's something you should do anyway.

    4. ... usually when I do this I quickly find out within the first 15 minutes WHY I didn't get in touch for ages

    5. 100% Agreed

    Cheers,
    Rob

Waking up early, if one can manage that, is a great opportunity to get your engines revved for the day. There are quite a lot of advantages - in my case, my kids are usually still asleep, giving me the opportunity to follow up on emails, add a new blog entry to one of my sites, or simply take a shower.

And I couldn't agree more on the handwritten note. Technology is amazing, but there is something special about receiving (and giving) a handwritten note that technology will never truly achieve.

Rob, I agree with most of this. :-)

However, the underlying point of what the OP said is something I've read and heard from many successful people offline and that is that it is best to have a list of things you do consistently every day rather than do nothing and then do a whole lot like a roller coaster.

So even if you do not agree with the items on the list of the OP, make your own list of 5 to 10 things that are unnegotiable and you make yourself do every day until it is habit.

I'm with you on these, not everyone's a morning person and the stuff on the news is so bias and often comes from a codependent perspective. I think the best thing to do is to get right up and (after feeding your body a healthy breakfast) and start taking action, but that's just me.

I do this every morning, whether I feel like it or not, and I've found that acting in spite of whether you feel like it is the best motivation and the most direct road to success.

These are wonderful tips which you share with us. First tips i really want to implement as i wake up very late and rush toward office and always get late to office. Surly i will start to implementing your tip.

Already implementing you second tip of reading headlines and start learning about the opportunities. After taking tea i get some relaxation.

Again these are wonderful tips... cheers...

      i was the same way!

then i read this japanese book... it talks about how many days the average human needs to repeat a certain task before it becomes a habit and... i followed the book and turned waking up early a habit.... i used to just tell myself that im a night person and that i function better at night....but after the first few months of waking up early i realized how much work i have finished and how much more project i had time for... it's great... i have half a mind to translate the book and rewrite it in english...with a quick guide and timeline lol

Except it doesn't always work. It may take many days to make a habit, but depending on the habit it doesn't always take. I'm a night person. For years (literally 15 years) I woke up early every morning to get my kids off to school. The minute they were grown and gone, I went back to working late and sleeping 2 hours later in the morning. It just works better with my natural rhythms. I actually get more accomplished this way. Sometimes trying to force something just doesn't work. It's usually better to try things out and then be realistic enough to discover what really works for you personally.

Hey just being able to wake up at all is an event for me. But after that event has passed in my life I find out what else I can do to make it even better.

Read any outstanding emails that I need to respond too.
          Check any outstanding news headlines
When I know that the world still humming then I write down 3 things I want accomplished by days end
If I get those 3 things accomplished I then write another 3 to be done either that day or the next day. this way I always feel I'm ahead of myself and can relax any time I want.

    Great motivational post mate,

Personally, I like to go for a run every morning. I feel great afterwards, and you know what they say, healthy body, healthy mind.

For tip 2, I'm one of those people RobKonrad was talking about, except I just don't watch the news, I don't watch t.v. full stop.

I get up early but I know others who prefer to work late in the night. Every night before I go to bed, I make a list of 5 things I will accomplish the next day. Sometimes I don't complete all the tasks, but I have a list in front of me when I start the day.

Before I started doing my list, I was going in a dozen or more different directions. No focus.

Looking at a long list of goals is overwhelming. Breaking it down into doable tasks each day will help you accomplish your goals.

    I don't agree with no 2.

    Here is why...

    1. Most of what's covered in the news is negative depressing and can't help much in success. Earthquakes, murders, rapes economic turmoil is what is mostly in the news. To me this cannot add a single thing in my life. By the way, did you know Bill Gates does watch TV?

    2. News and headlines is for the average person who believes in luck. And success minded person is of above average mind.

    3. Whatever you focus on expands, If you focus on bad headlines those are the ones that will likely grow in your mind.

    Do you agree?

I would agree with #1 only if you take news at face value. but I'm sure you're capable of looking beyond simple murder stories... to be honest tho... i stopped watching the news on TV. but i spend an hour everyday reading up on all the news feeds online. mostly feeds related to fields i choose. and i look at news in Asia. honestly when it comes to tech and lifestyle. USA looks like Asia in the 80's and you can see where US will go if you look to Asia and Euro....(my opinion only...do not turn this thread into a patriotic debate...i love the US as well lol)

#2 and #3 sort of becomes obsolete... 3 definitely since no one should focus on "bad headlines"

and #2 unforunately the ave. person do not read the news anymore...and even if they did... it's important to know that the masses are doing because that is my target audience. i think for me to be above ave. i should know everything the average person knows AND more. if i just know other things then them...i'm not "above" them nor can i say i know more... i just know different things then them...

so we should look at what they look at but have better understanding and be able to use the info...

we should not simple turn our heads away and say "that's only for the average person" for the sake of being different. because different is only different..not better...and not extraordinary. ... you need to have the ordinary before you can have the extra...

Number one on my list is to express gratitude every day, for what I have in my life, right now.

To often, we get focused on the things we don't have or get impatient because the things we are working towards haven't yet been "achieved."

This is something I've been recovering from, in fact.

Being grateful serves as a nice reminder that my life is happening RIGHT NOW - and I should strive to make each moment of it as good as I can and know how.

        GL everyone

I agree with you. To the extent that you are fully focused on selling to the mass market, you need to know what's going on.

However, if you are a banking software developer, for instance, news may be irrelevant.

Take my example. I live in Nairobi and I am copywriter mainly focused on Internet marketing. My local TV stations are full of irrelevant political statements by politicians who do not understand basic concepts like the law of demand and supply.

The international stations like SkyNews, CNN or Aljazeera will tell me about drug cartels in Mexico, the Greece crisis, the Republican nomination twists and possibly gay rights abuses in Zimbabwe.

You will clearly agree I don't need any of this. Do you?

            No doubt about that...

I am here on warrior forum daily...

I regularly visit the Reader's Digest and Cosmopolitan sites to sharpen my headline writing abilities...

I visit Yahoo to learn financial matters and the sub-heads writing styles...

I visit a couple of websites of top copywriters...

As much as I abhor news, I am aware that if The Republican Party Committee was to engage me to write their fundraising copy, it would require me to get glued to the TV for a couple of hours.

Ideally what matters is getting priorities right.

Thanks though. It is certainly a healthy debate.

Excellent points here. What you think about - you bring about.

Actually, there have been studies that show just watching TV activates your flight and fight response (aka is a stressor). So just by watching TV, you are adding a stress to your system.

Doesn't mean that I'm advocating being uninformed, just have to choose wisely how and how often info is obtained.

    Cool thread.

    What I'm working towards,

    1) Wake up early

    2) Exercise for 15 minutes

    3) shower and then meditation for 10 minutes

    4) leave my home within 55 minutes after I wake up to my workplace.
( I run a small business which is near to my home )

    5) This is ambitious for me - Make two days out of one. ( Day 1a - 8 a.m to 2:00 p.m - Lunch and small nap @ home - Day 1b: 3:30 to 9:00 )

There are some great ideas here.

I like to get up early, 6am is perfect for myself, I find myself much more productive when I do this and really enjoy it. I also have 3 days a week where I work from 6am until 10pm, with breaks of course.

This is working for me right now, and it's keeping me very focused.

      2. sit in silence and become aware of your breath every morning and every evening for 15min-1hour. notice how it feels around the nose and mouth area. The purpose of this is to help you become more aware of your own thoughts.
      3. start the day off with the 4 breath meridian activation points - inhale and touch thumb to 2nd finger then inhale and touch middle finger, then touch thumb to pinky and on the way back exhale and touch pinky and thumb then exhale thumb to forth finger, and so forth. After a couple of minutes of this, you're head will start buzzing intensely like you just drank 5 cups of coffee topped off with red bull shots. Then at the end, take a deep breath and exhale as loud as you can.
      4. do a set of 25 M100 while focusing on surroundings. You'll be surprised at the improvement of your cognitive and memory skills.
      5. focus 100% on the end results by visualizing it and take massive action to get there. All those mini small big whatever it takes to finish the task at hand. Don't worry, nothing will ever be perfect..."a master once used to be a disaster."

I would add some form of meditation/relaxation to your list.

I have some really soothing music I love to just dim the lights to and listen to for a while - it really helps clear the mind and helps you be more creative with your ideas.

Great list, though #2 is a double-edged sword: it can be easy to get sucked in to the news and lose track of time! It's important to skim the headlines, get the information you need and get out.

I would add this great tip: do the one thing you most dread doing in your day first. Whether that's calling a new business prospect, handling a customer service complaint, or anything else that seems daunting. Once you handle this task, the rest of the day is a downhill run.

great post that's actually really motivating me to keep going. i think with anything in life, if you push yourself to do better for example like you said waking up 30 minutes earlier you can get somewhere. plus making yourself a list of things you regularly do is a big part of being successful.

Nice lists - Personally I don't care too much for the news since it is so negative. I think the morning is great for getting organized and mentally set for the day. It is also a great time to write a blog or catch up on e-mails before the phone starts ringing. It is vital to have a daily method of operation so you have a plan to achieve your goals. Without this, your day gets away from you and the results aren't achieved.

The list was good, but everyone is different, and what works for someone doesn't necessarily work for everyone.

Like Rob, I'm not a morning person. So I start my day at 11 am, with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, and breakfast ( or brunch ) - the most important meal of the day for me.
Then I spend about 1/2 hour or so visualizing and affirming.

Then I fire up my computer, visit my 5 or 6 inspirational sites, read emails, and I get to work.

I rarely watch the news. I skim headlines online. Like others, I find the news to be depressing, and sometimes filled with fear-mongering. So I avoid it. I watch some TV, but prefer to read a good book.

I envy people, who're able to get up before 8am and be fine, hell, even ready for some exercising or working..

With the rest I however must agree, although my handwriting is awful, which brings me down to 3 out of 5.

Talking to an old friend of mine or even a current ones, suggesting an opportunity in my growing business? Those, whom I talked to already, think, I'm crazy, I'd not risk to alienate older friends, I know their nature and opinion on IM. Damn, 2 out of 5.

no. 2, yes I do that plus 1+ hour daily here on WF for starter, keeping relation with old business partners, sure thing.

Yet I think, I've not passed your quiz. .)

    But let's not lose hope..

Out of those five steps, I think the first one is really important. If I don't wake up early, I would feel guilty of myself for wasting some hours that I have. I totally agree with this one, just keep focused and always be motivated.

I agree with you except because I tend to avoid negative news, I catch the headlines on the internet. Although not as thorough, I keep up with the trends this way, without the news breaking my heart each morning since I am very impressionable and have an active imagination!

I do like to rise early - can't sleep in when I know there is much to be accomplished when you realize we all have a destiny to fulfil. I believe God put us here for a reason, more than to make a living, but to make a difference and leave the world a better place for having lived here.

Touching base with one person - awesome stuff! I believe we are eternal creatures in a temporary body and we all need a personal touch from someone at least once a day.

All good stuff! Thanks for sharing!

    The major issue:

    1) I don't watch TV - News apparently doesn't makes us feel successful or motivated, it's loaded with full of junks and negative things..

    2) I like your idea of writing a hand-writing note to someone we love.. going to start doing it soon

    may God bless you,

One thing that I learned a long time ago, different people have different "steps" that they do that have helped them be a "success".

I learned that many things that helped some people, did not help me and vice versa.

Now, I just tell people what I do and make sure they come up with what works for them.

If one "methodology" works for you, good, if not, move on.

Also, different people will define "success" differently.

I thought I had reached "success" when I could "do what I wanted, when I wanted, with whom I wanted, for as long as I wanted, where I wanted and had the financial ability to support it with ease."

Some one else might define success as making a certain amount of money, being healthy, having a loving relationship, being debt free, etc. etc. etc.

Here is what I do and did when I worked long hours in my offline businesses.

I sleep in. I get up when my body naturally wants to.

I spend 30 minutes before I even get out of bed being grateful for everything I already have (even when I had very little) and visualizing what I wanted for the day.

    Then, I have breakfast.

I NEVER watch the news or read any newspapers or look at any headlines about News online. I gave that up years ago after several different international success coaches recommended it.

I read something positive and self improvement 15- 30 minutes or more every day.

I watch something positive and self improvement 15 - 30 minutes or more every day.

I stopped associating with anyone who put down my dreams, said I couldn't do it, or were just negative in their outlook on life.

I eat whatever I want mostly it is really high quality and not junk but I don't limit it in any way. I just eat what I consider "real food" and not processed products, for the most part but I'm not a zealot about anything.

I look for the good in any situation.

I go to sleep when I am sleepy not at a set time and I spend 30 minutes at the end of the day, just before I fall asleep, being grateful for the day and visualizing how I want the next day to be.

If any of that helps anyone, that is great. If not, search for until you find what works for you.

    :-)

Tanks very much nice and helpful tips.:p
And the 1st tip i think it's the most underrated rule of all, because people are thinking ''i will wake up a little bit later today, but i will still do the work or work till night.'' yeah but don't forget that there is a person that is waking up 1-2 hours earlier than you, and he's working so one day he can take your place and beat you. Always have that in mind

    I'd probably say...

    1. Not necessarily good to wake up early - one of my favourite parts of working for myself and online is I can wake up when my body is ready to wake up!

    2. It's both good and bad to stay ahead of news. If you are going to do it I'd recommend picking your news sources carefully so that you are not given biased views and also picking your media. TV for example if a very slow way to consume news and you'll not necessarily hear about the areas that interest you.

The other three suggestions are fantastic!
