The Best Way To Start Your Day

Gary Halbert, legendary marketer and copywriter once wrote in a personal letter to his son:

"In fact, in my opinion, the best groove to get into is
get out of bed, (early) wash your face, brush your teeth, use
the bathroom, etc., and then, eat a piece of fruit (I think a
banana is the best) and then hit the street! That's it.
Just get out that front door and start moving. Walk, run,
jog. Keep moving for about 1/2 hour and then turn around and
come back. You know, I really do believe this is the very
best way in the world to start the day.
It cleans you out, it
settles you down and it gives you a nice glow that will stay
with you throughout the day. It will also make you more
clearheaded and improve the quality of your thinking. The
benefits are enormous and, believe me, if you start doing
this right away (like the day after you get this letter!) it
won't be long at all till you become positively addicted to
your early morning workout."

Personally, I do a bit of meditation when I get out of bed first thing in the morning - keeps me focused and uplifted for the rest of the day.

How do you like to start your day?

Sounds good to me! Apparently fruit such as apple and strawberries are great for waking you up in the morning. Due to a severe lack of energy (chronic fatigue) I am trying to include some exercise into my morning or during the day but it's a work in progress. I do know that heat gives one energy, and exercising heats your body up.

I start my day by having a shower, reading my motivation folder that I've put together for myself (various quotes and pictures that inspire me, as well as my goals, etc), having breakfast, saying hi to my parrots and feeding them, then getting to work.

      Lol that's a wonderful thing.

And I bet you force-train them to say "Hi" in response.

Have you tried any qigong (chi kung) for your condition. I have studied for almost 10 years. I have learned dozens of methods, but always return to a few gems I learned years ago. In actual, there are 6 methods I still use and recommend. If you would be interested, I could make you a video and you could see the results for yourself. As I said, I have tried other methods (library, amazon, bookstore, etc), and none compare to the ones I learned from a taoist monk's deciple. This is not a sale, I truly enjoy helping people out. Let me know.

  • First of all, how is the alarm clock rings I get up ... at once. I do not snooze, do not lying in bed. Do you consider that you should immediately get up. Then the basic steps in the toilet. Starting a few exercises to stretch ... and shower. Healthy breakfast, coffee and planning the day, save all of the tasks. A moment of meditation and go to work!

Yes, the first thing I do every morning is go for a run and hit the gym. It leaves you feeling energised for the rest of the day and there is no excuse not to do it. Setting yourself up right in the morning is vital because it creates the pattern for the rest of the day.

I've been thinking about doing this, actually. I think it would help improve my energy and focus, but one problem is that it's usually pretty damn cold out at that hour, and I'm not very well-insulated. I try to go for a walk at least once a day during the afternoon when it's warmest, though, unless there's a snowstorm outside.

I'm with Zabrina on this one, it's just too damn cold in the mornings, at least the last few weeks it has been. The last few days I've been waking up to my alarm at 6:30am, hitting snooze and waking up again around 9am when I'm ready to stumble out of bed and start the day. I'd love to be a morning person, I mean like 5:30am kind of morning, and I know I'd be more productive, but I'm like a snowball rolling down hill - I start off slow and gradually gather speed throughout the day, often doing my most productive work in the evenings.

A very interesting way to start your day. I too jump out of bed and start my morning ritual. However I am currently focusing on letting go of anxiety about my day. Which is totally a waste of energy as this is week 2 of anxiety attached to my mornings. I know it is because I am in worry mode when I wake up. I do not know why that is - I am so far thinking my mind is in HABIT mode to worry as soon as my head is off the pillow. May be if I head out the door and find peace that will help! I will start this process and keep you posted.
Thank you for your helpful way to start the day.

Prayer is the single-most important tool to start the day. Always thank your God for the beautiful things he has created, for the beautiful family, for the food that we eat and many more things may it be small or big, important or not. Starting off with a positive mindset jumpstarts my day!

It's a great idea to get your body in motion as early as possible. It's all too easy to get up, eat while browsing the web, rush out the door to sit down some more at another desk, then be too tired after work to exercise.

    My current morning routine:

Wake up at 7:30 (Though I prefer 6 there are nights I'm out drinking till 1:30).

Brew coffee, cook Slow Carb breakfast

Dictate notes from current Spiritual or Personal Development book for 30 min (can read and notate 1 book/week like this)

    15 min yoga

15 min meditation (working up to 30)

    Shower, dress, etc

Get to "work" at 9:00 sharp, review weekly plan, make daily plan

Then (in theory) is when I will eat the frog, though it typically gets procrastinated till 1:00 or tomorrow

I used to exercise first thing in the morning after a banana but it's not worth the freezing cold right now, even to drive to the gym. I do that around 3-5 pm 3 times/week and it helps to divide up my day and re-energize me halfway through (always perky in the morning), plus I dovetail running errands at the same time--thus making one daily trip into the real world for this work at home hermit

I also used to get to work immediately, but I just want to have some alone time in the morning when I can focus on myself and my needs without worrying about all the stuff I have to accomplish just yet.

Well now this is an interesting question.... The best way to begin the day.

    A lot of GREAT answers!

What didn't work for me was the morning hike. Tried that last year, stretched my Achilles tendon, and was totally lame for two months.

Gosh, as a backslider, I know what I ought to do, but don't do often enough... The folks here that start the day with a prayer, right thinking, and a goal are on the right track.

I'll tell you a bit about the habits of a legendary insurance salesman ( W. Clement Stone ) that struck a chord with me in 1975 and lasts to this day...

Stone's approach to the day was to get up reasonably early, shower, go make his morning sales run, eat lunch, take a short nap, wake-up shower, and then go make his afternoon and/or evening sales. He built an empire doing this.

Stone also came up with the term, PMA....Positive Mental Attitude. This approach worked for him and many others from 1922 til the present day.

Along the way he also ran across another young man, Napolean Hill by name, and threw in with him for the monster classic, "Think and Grow Rich."

If you're one of the folks reading this that is into that positive attitude stuff, you would do well to research the two above names, for these two fellows while they didn't invent PMA, for that must have been around a million years... broke new ground in explaining how to put it to work.

Having been familiar with this stuff since 1975, you might ax..."Norm, does it work?"

I would answer you, "Sometimes yes, sometimes no." But regardless, I live better just knowing about it. It's foundational, you see.

Which brings us back to those who begin the day with a prayer and a good positive attitude. Win or lose, folks who think and work their day in such a aren't terribly surprised when good things come their way, or nearly as devastated when things don't work out.

And they sleep better at night, too, because they know with right thinking and a good attitude, things always seem to work out for the best, sooner or later.

Yoga in bed - A propped pillow Peace Practice

Do this small practice everyday or even just a couple of times a week - once you start though you may find you will want or need to do it everyday I think its a wonderful way to start your day, it takes just a few minutes.

Before you open your eyes, feel yourself awaken. Let gentle inner smiles spread all over your body. Yawn & stretch. Slowly let your eyes see the room. Roll over and then prop yourself up with pillows into a comfortable position, make sure your back is supported.

Sit in any comfortable position. Stretch your arms toward the ceiling and spread your fingers wide. Reach up and sway from side to side. Breathe slowly and fully to awaken your brain; massage your head.

Lengthen your legs forward on the bed as you point and flex your heels and toes a few times. Rotate your ankles in both directions and then 'windshield wiper' your feet back and forth.

Take a deep breath and then exhale as you slowly look to the left. Inhale to the right, gently moving your head to loosen your neck muscles. When you settle back to centre, consciously breath in, and on your out breath whisper 'peace'. Repeat 3 times or more if you like.

Lick your index finger and touch the centre of your forehead or the indentation at the eyebrow centre. Feel the cooling effect of this action and direct your awareness into this third eye point. Visualise your perfect day. Should challenges of the coming day arise in your consciousness - meetings, scheduling, deadlines - redirect your attention to the 'peace' mantra.

Bring your palms together at your heart. Receive and send the gratitude unfolding for this glorious day. Energy always follows thought. Let your intentions of confidence, compassion and love unfold. Now. Know all this is well. Slowly get out of bed to begin this day with purpose and ease.
    Enjoy

The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is have a shower.
Without it, I wouldn't be able to function properly. It's refreshing.

After the shower I have breakfast. A bowl of oats or a couple of Weet-bix, then 2 pieces of toast.

    That's it. Simple isn't it

I use to work out in the morning, immediately after I woke up, but lately I've stopped doing so after finding extra time later in the day to do it.

After that I hit the gym for some heavy weigh lifting (upper body one day... lower body the next day) and stop in town to check for mail in my Post Office box and to grab a light brunch. Then back home because I usually have two or three 30 minute photo sessions to shoot... yes I'm addicted to $1000+ daily paychecks. Then I'm finished by noon and spend the rest of the day going to the beach or working on my business taking care of marketing and selling images!

    Cheers,
    Steve

I like to wake up and immediately give thanks. Another day to experience, to laugh, to cry, to help, to heal, to....well, you get it. It is usually followed by qigong and then some coffee on most days. Weather dependent, going outside is a great way to connect as well. I enjoy alone time in the morning, to program and put forth my expectations for that day. It really helps to carry a smile for the whole day and a calm sense about you.

By switching on the news watching and listing to all the negative stories just kidding...that would be the wrong way to start your day...unless you're Richard Branson of course

I start my day by "Creating Positive Energies" when I wake up I think about my "Ultimate Desires" then think about my goals and what I need to do to that day that will bring me closer, then I jump out of bed, clap my hands together and say out loud
"Today is going to be a GREAT! DAY!! by the time I'm in the bathroom the Positive Energy is already in motion

My morning awakening and freshening is more mental than physical so I start my day that way.

Soon as I wake up, I say a short prayer of thanks, have a glass of orange/mango juice that I squeeze myself, take a shower, have breakfast of hot chocolate, a slice of wheat bread and something more solid like friend egg, a slice of ham, sausage or corned beef.

I cap my breakfast with a slice of papaya and a finger of banana.

Then off to either the tennis court or the gym. I am back home a little after 8 a.m. and start pounding my laptop.

How's that to start the day?

my son had sensory integration dysfunction and he has taught me so much about sensory input. So now I get up and head straight into a power shower of peppermint shower gel. That really wakes me up, then I make a cup of fantastic Italian coffee. I sit for 10 mins in silence and savour my coffee, the smell and taste of it and I count my blessings. Then I put on spotify top tracks for about 20 mins and dance around the house getting ready.

Then I go and enrich the world with my joy.

Always try to wake up early, ideally with the sun rise (if you have not worked till mid night). If you cannot do it yourself, get an alarm clock or simply use your mobile. You can also take the help of some family member to make you awake. Then feel relax about the day without thinking any difficult task that is due later in the day, instead think it is your day. Be positive. If you have time, you must activate in some physical activities like running or jogging or do some physical exercises in your home. But it is always recommended to make time for exercise for at least three to four times in week - whatever be your schedule . Then get ready - have a morning shower, take breakfast and dress yourself but never take any stress thinking about you are getting late or something like that (if you wake up early you will never have to face that). Then think about the activities you need to do today. But again the warning - never let negative thinking swallow you. Eat healthy breakfast, it will boost your body as well as mind

I used to meditate every morning and I really am going to get back to that habit. Now my morning goes approximately like this:

      1. Wake up early
      2. Have a big mug of black coffee while checking my mails etc.
      2. Feed the family
      3. Bring the son to daycare
      4. Workout (HIIT or strength training, on alternate days)
      5. Shower
      6. Quick low-carb breakfast
      7. Work on my blog, study IM, take actions, listen, learn, read, make money, take photos...

My plan is to get up a bit earlier and have my meditation/thanking/positive thinking session right after waking up.

That's what I used to do but nowadays I'm awake so late in the night that it's not that easy to get up very early... For the most of my life I used to get up at 5 am! Now just 6.30 am. Have to get back to that habit.

Great question - and good variety of answers!

    My routine:
    1. Get up immediately alarm rings - around 6.30 (often I wake up 2 mins before it goes off.)
    2. Peppermint tea
    3. Computer!
    - Clear emails
-- Do an email task if less than 5 mins, else
-- Put in Evernote as a To Do
    - Check calendar for appointments for the day
    - Clear in-tray
-- Same as for emails re: 5 mins /Evernote
    - Review/tweak my To Dos for the day (I use Evernote for this too.)
    4. 15 minutes stretching and muscle strengthening exercises
    5. Shower
    6. Breakfast
    7. Work through my Evernote To Do list

    This works for me!

How do you like to start your day?
I was really into running in the mornings which I loved. The one problem I've run into in Canada is the winter.

I don't mind the cold - I actually enjoy it when I'm running. It's the snow. Many areas don't plow the sidewalks and salt the ice, which makes it very difficult to run!

Looking forward to summer when I can get out a run again

How do you like to start your day?
I read this quote a while ago and kind of disagree. I like to exercise--walking mostly--in the afternoon or evening. I'm a morning person and already have high energy and bubbling ideas, so it makes sense for me to hit the office as early as possible and be super-productive. By the time my energy is flagging, I'm ready for a change of pace and then a walk.

Although it's hard to argue with Gary; he was good at what he did!

Edited to add: The worst way to start the day: rolling out of bed and checking your email.
