Is it possible to make money and remain honest?

Even though every person's logical mind is different, sometimes people think of someone's success as a linear process. They either have something, or they don't.

But those people probably figured out very unique ways, that work in their situation only. They have accomplished that because they were able to apply their logical mind to the problem, forced themselves to develop discipline, and apply their knowledge and skill to produce a physical result (a web page, an ebook, etc).

As their efforts began to pay off, they realized that if they did more of that, they would make more money. At this point, their focus was on "what made money in the past", and not "how to offer value to people".

Let me explain what I mean. Offering value, is writing genuine thoughts and helpful information and distributing it to others. "What made money in the pat", means... well, just that, I can't get any more literal than that.

So, unless we combine both:
1) Striving to create and send something to interested parties
2) Make money

We can't possibly be genuinely honest about running our business.

Writing an e-book with the desire to teach others what you know is an act of generosity.

Writing one e-book and focusing on driving more and more traffic to it is an act of pursuing self-interest.

When you make money do you feel that you are doing something good for others, and not only for yourself? What makes you think so?

I think it's a limiting belief to feel bad about making money. If you are truly offering something of value and you know it will change someones life, isn't it natural for you to want them to have it? These are called "win-win" situations. And deep down everyone knows whether they are doing it for the right reasons or not.

From Steve Pavlina's blog, there's 2 types of people, lightworkers and darkworkers. You're probably a lightworker--but you might be a guilt-tripped darkworker.

Lightworkers are wired to help people. Darkworkers are wired to help themselves.

Each person can do really good things. A lightworker being honest will only be honest while helping other people. A darkworker being honest will only be honest while helping themselves. The same eBook written by a lightworker will be about helping people, while for a darkworker, it will be about bringing traffic.

What you should be is honest to yourself.

Help me understand this, can you write an e-book without targeting a lot of traffic to your site? Why not kill two birds with one stone - get as many people to your site to read your e-book!

I can't really imagine why people think that you need to be dishonest to make money.

Of course there are a couple of bad eggs like Bernie Madoff etc but most people in business I think are quite honest, perhaps even more so than the general public.

Reputation is very important in business and generally I just think it is short term thinking to try and "get one over" on other people.

I don't agree, to take your own example, driving more traffic to your site isn't of selfish interest if your ebook has value. The purpose is to bring more people to discover and have the chance to have access to the value.

Everything is a matter of perspective, don't you think?
I can assure you that the richest people in the world have always used the "Give value to get money" law and that those who don't live by it can make money of course, but won't keep it long or won't keep getting money for long.

As Napoleon Hill words it: "No wealth or position can long endure, unless built upon truth and justice."

This right here sums it up quite nicely.

Suppose you buy a daily latte from Starbucks. Do you feel ripped off when you fork over a Lincoln for that beverage? Not at all, I'd imagine, because you'd gladly pay for that thing that is of value to you. Beyond that, Starbucks has created a comfortable atmosphere up front that you probably enjoy, and you find yourself happy to fork over money for that luxury. The company has provided so much value up front that you have no qualms parting with your money. You are glad to do it.

That doing good for others is why Starbucks broke into an already competitive market and dominated. They thought about a consumer need left unfulfilled and positioned themselves to fill that void, to provide that good for the customer. And their owners are rich as a result of it.

It is exactly the fulfillment of needs and desires that attracts money, so there is no reason to feel unethical about it in the first place, assuming you are actually fulfilling that want or need and not bait-and-switching your customer.

On a separate note, I will have to slightly disagree with Napoleon Hill -- many a great wealth has been built and maintained on mass exploitation. Then again, this depends upon one's definition of wealth. That. of course, is another thread entirely.

If you want to make a real business, and make real long term income, the only way you're going to do it is through providing value, and trust.

Honesty is the only way in my opinion.

The truth in your final question is that it is a matter of ones heart. Some can and some can not. A lot are moved big or small by greed but some are not. Again a matter of each persons heart. It is the great test of us all. A test several will not pass and also the source of the fear behind why most do not try.

Of course some fortunes were made from exploitation but they didn't last.
I mean think about organized crime. Of course they are all making A LOT of money but their whole business revolves around distrust and exploitation.

The heads of those organizations don't stop changing and nobody has absolute and long-term control on an exploitative business. It just won't last.

That's the difference between quick cash and business.

  • Honesty is the way to go.
That is what "Attraction Marketing" is all about.

I am very honest on my Blog, and this gains trust with my readers.
They trust me, and tend to follow me into business opportunities, or purchase products on my recommendation.

Making money while remaining honest is harder but way more stable and long lasting.

Honesty builds a foundation of character, discipline and hard work in you, and as time passes, people will appreciate that.
