Clutters

In life, the older we are the more belongings we have and gradually it will reach a stage where it will overwhelm us. The clutters in our house or work place are definitely increasing and if we do not have a good system to handle the clutters, it is only a matter of time that it will affect our quality of life.

Problems of having too much clutters

Whenever we have too much clutters in our workplace or home, it tend to affect our mood and weigh us down.

If we have huge amount of clutters in our work place, we give others the impression that we are sloppy and have a bad working attitude. Clutters in our life tend to affect our productivity too.

Think of the time when we need something and we need to spend a whole 2 hours searching for it just because it is hiding behind our stacks of books. Time is being wasted just because of the clutters.

3 tips to help you clear the clutters

1. Routine - Spend a minimal of 10 minutes everyday to clear up your stuff to prevent the clutters from increasing.

2. Have a good filing system - Organize your files and file up important document regularly to ensure that you can find them as soon as you need them.

3. Throw away things that you don't need - We tend to keep things that we thought that we would need it later on but most probably we will not use it again. Throw away things that you don't really need and the if you had not taken a look at something in 3 years time, most probably you won't ever need it.

Parting Words

By removing clutters in our life, we are able to enhance our productivity and also have a piece of clearer mind. Try keeping your house and work place clutter free and you will reap the benefits.

Cheers

I am a product of a hoarding couple. And I can attest to the fact that if you don't consciously try to change it you will pass it down like a disease. And it effects all kinds of things in your life. Good topic~

      Hi sunconsultancy,

Thanks for the idea. This is a great way to sort out clutter and keep them at where they should be.

If we don't consciously try to change the habit of hoarding clutter, it definitely will tend to creep up on us and affect our quality of life.

I have been helping people get rid of clutter and organize their homes and offices for several years now. I find that people have a hard time letting go of something that they paid a lot for, even if it's just sitting there waiting for you to bang your shin on it. I have to work hard to get them to see that giving it to someone else would make them feel better than living with the clutter. Throwing items like this away isn't even an option when someone paid a lot for an item.

Another thing that people have a really tough time letting go of is something a family member made or gave to them. Especially hard are the handmade gifts...even if they are totally not in line with their decor. They feel guilty, worrying if that person comes to their house and the item isn't there...what will they tell them? When in truth...people don't often do a search of your house to find items they have given you. Just as you don't do that when you visit a friend or relative's house. You are going there to visit them, not their stuff.

Hi, great tips, we tend to keep a lot of stuff we don't need. By donating it, and giving it away, great way to release the stuff and give back to people who need it more than us.

Good tips to start with. I've been actively managing the clutter in my house for almost a year now. I notice that when the clutter builds up for a few days, all of a sudden I cannot focus or concentrate on my tasks, and I end up procrastinating usually or moving to areas of the house that aren't cluttered.

You definitely need to spend time regularly each day to manage it--you have to be proactive about it.

      Hi Denise,

"I find that people have a hard time letting go of something that they paid a lot for, even if it's just sitting there waiting for you to bang your shin on it"

I got to agree on this one. I found that people found it hard to let go of things that they own, especially things that they paid a lot for.

      Hi Traffic101,

Donating stuff that we don't need is like killing 2 birds with one stone. As you said, it helps to clear the clutters and in the mean time we are doing charity too.

This is so true - I know I find that I cannot concentrate with clutter and mess around me it plays on my mind big time.

I've have 2 rooms that need clearing and did one yesterday so feel much happier about it - need to tackle the other now - which is the worse one of two.

Well I best get on with it I will then be in a much better frame of mind.

Please don't just throw it away. If it has use then take it to one of the agencies that will give it to someone in need. Trash=landfill. Giving to an agency=someone uses it. Thank you.

I think clutter is a reflection of my mind. When I'm focused, clutter is unacceptable. I notice overwhelmed people tend to have a lot of stuff.

Clutter is also a function of abundance. Just what to do with it all? Great tips - I'm in the middle of a decluttering myself.

      Hi Elaine,

Clutters does not only make our space untidy, it also cause our mind to be cluttered and affect our frame of mind. You had already tidied up one room, just one more to go!

      Hi Palo,

Thanks for the added point. It seem like giving out those items that I do not need is a better choice.

    Ok, guys/gals great topic.

    Let dig a little deeper!
Are you using clutter as an excuse to NOT do things that you need to do?
do you find yourself filing away your papers when what you really need to do is write a new blog, tag it at 2.0 sites, get more traffic and maybe optimize your landing page?

What is more important clutter or being productive?
You cant generalize clutter to mean not being productive, I know I don't have the 'neat' desk like many but what is important is do I get things done?

You see each person is different our brains work differently, I can have a clutter but know exactly where to find what I need - you can say its my 'cloud tagging' like filing feature
while others need nice manila folders and timestamps to file stuff away.

Think of clutter like a symptom - now find the disease that is making you 'unproductive' because that is what you need to fix.

      Hi Alibaba,

For me, the clutter on the table cause me to lose me to lose my focus and it is hard for me to write an article when I am in that state. By tidying up my desk weekly, I find that I am able to work better. As the saying goes, one man's meat is another man's poison, this approach may work for me but not others and I do know some of my friends are able to work better in a cluttered environment.

I had written an article on the 80/20 rule and maybe you would like to read it too. Introduction to 80/20 rule : Lesson by Vincent

      Hi geordie,

Maybe you can try meditation and learn to let things go. Emotional burdens can be more woeful then physical clutters and it will be great if you can learn to let things go more easily.

Great tips. Clutters are like extra 'obstacles' in your mind when you're trying to focus on a task. Remove these clutters and you're left with a clear path towards your intended destination.

Take action and practice it physically, and your mind will be set to it eventually.

      Hi Glenn,

The junk are like mental obstacles that stick inside our mind and this does make it hard to concentrate.

Yes, too much clutter is depressing and really puts a damper on things. I know I feel a lot better and more motivated when my desk isn't covered with junk, junk, junk. It's better now, but the clutter is slowly creeping back.

In addition to spending time weeding out clutter, it may be worthwhile to example WHY the clutter is there in the first place.

    In my case:

    1. I keep getting gifts I don't need. I feel guilty for not appreciating the gifts more, but I also resent the resulting clutter.

    2. I don't have a convenient "home" for everything. I like to read in bed, but I don't have a shelf next to the bed for books. So, books start piling up on the floor. I don't have a specific place for mail, so it gets piled up amongst the books or on the desk I rarely use.

Not only do I need to get rid of stuff, I need a better SYSTEM for keeping clutter under control.

Hey Vincelog - have you thought of using Feng Shui to help with clutter. It is a good tool for organizing things around you.

Here a thought for the day....

Ask yourself how you feel when you look at a particular object. Does it evoke positive emotions, or negative ones? If you're hanging on to furniture and other items that your mother gave you because you would feel guilty for getting rid of it, then the object is only giving you negative emotions. It's clutter.

Ask yourself how you feel when you look at a particular object. Does it evoke positive emotions, or negative ones? If you're hanging on to furniture and other items that your mother gave you because you would feel guilty for getting rid of it, then the object is only giving you negative emotions. It's clutter.
          Hi Collegepro,

I have never thought of clearing the clutters using Feng Shui and it is a new idea to me. Thanks for sharing this great idea and I had learned something new today.

          Cheers

Thanks for the post.. I always have a lot of clutters, and I mostly spend hours clearing them. I am wasting a lot of time, but I am trying my best to be able to cope.

      Hi trishia,

I suggest keeping a weekly routine to help clear your clutters and this may help you to prevent clutters build up and you may spend lesser amount on time clearing it too.

      Cheers

One of the best tips ever - get yourself an office (not at home) and if possible walk to work everyday.

This prevents interuptions if you work from home and the fact you dont have your car means you get more exercise and people will stop asking you for lifts all of the time.

I work to these principles and they made a massive difference to my working life.

Thanks for the tips. For me, everytime I clean up my space and got rid all the useless clutter, I would end up with new clutter within a month or so and then the cycle just repeats. This is something that I need to break.

But yes, after cleaning up the clutter I felt more focused and better in general knowing I have more places to move around. During my clean up I would just throw away all useless things (sometimes is hard for me to let go :p) and donate all unwanted clothes to charity. I also agree that is better in putting all your things into large bins and putting them away is a great way in clearing up clutters.

Big, open spaces is always better anyway

I remember someone saying that our external space is the reflection of our internal space.

If we keep our external space clean it will clean up our internal space too. The same applis to the other way around.
