And if you're not on his list already, do sign up!

Jay gives away tons of his stuff that in my opinion, are just about the best marketing resources you could ever get your hands on.

Great thanks, but it doesn't say anything about his education. What i really want to know is when he started his consulting, was he working for a marketing consulting company? I'm assuming so? I'd like to know how he got his "foot in the door" so to speak.

    Thanks!

He has a set of videos titled, "My life in marketing". I think they're 2 hours a piece, 4 tapes, about 8 hours. He goes over his whole life story, ups and downs.

He worked for a bunch of different companies in the 70's, I think he got started in the late 60's?

Off the top of my head, he was...

      A cost accountant.
      Leased/sold trucks for Hertz.
      Worked for entrenpreneur magazine
Worked for icy hot (I think its still sold today in stores).
I think he worked for different associations in the 70's.

He basicallly accumulated a lot of experience (and trial and error) working for a lot of companies. Then started consulting, I think in the late 70's, early 80's. Working for investment rarities, newsletter publishers, etc (which you hear on his tapes).

I dont think he has a college education (I could be wrong, I wonder if he ever went back).

-He's tried a lot of different things. I don't think it was just one thing to get his foot in the door.

Yep, he says in My Life in Marketing that he didn't have a college education (maybe he does now), and that he learned his skills in the real world - "through on-the-job, empirical experience".

        Jay's a genius.

There's a couple of ways you could find it.

-It was produced as a vhs tape originally, so they don't show up very often on ebay. Maybe craigslist? Maybe garage sales/private sales? I don't know. People that have big marketing collections that they don't want anymore.

-It was taken from one of his protege courses (1990). I have both, the seminar and the videos, and its almost word for word. He did protege courses in 1989 and 90. I think they only come in a blue binder? You see them every once in a while.

-He talked a little bit about his background on his tony robbins interview tape. Thats a great tape to get started with jays philosophy/ideology.

There's also a book of his ads, I forget the name. Best ads from my private collection? Something like that. There's 10 or 15 examples of letters he wrote when he was consulting. Like, "How your cpa business could double by doing this ___". Then if these things suit you, call me. These were probably from 1984, or early 80's. They show how he solicited business.

If you get a collection of his stuff from the 80's or 90's, it'll probably include the ads and videos. I don't think he talks about it as much in recent seminars.

-The interesting thing, is it's all from on the job experience. He was doing something 30 years ago, joint ventures, or selling the back end, and now he's just giving it a twist.

      You should

I'm not exactly his biggest fan, but when it comes to developing a powerful marketing mindset, he's the man to learn from, along with the other legends of marketing.

Jay Abraham's stuff blew me away when I came across them about a decade ago. Simple, almost simplistic strategies and distinctions, yet they work like magic. When I read THE STRATEGY OF PRE-EMINENCE I started seeing business and success in life in a whole new light. Thanks for wondering. It would be fascinating to know the great man's ''roots''.

My life in marketing is for sale on occassion...someone mentioned craigs or ebay that is correct. Along with some googling you may find the 2 parts as well. I would just contact the man himself and ask if he have a copy lying around for a token amount.

    Thanks for the articles John.

Jay is a one man operation, but are there any larger Marketing firms that do what he does - go into a business and increase their profits with marketing consulting? I'd like to research future.

While studying his books and materials, I got the impression that his start in marketing was really jolted by reading books like:

My Life In Advertising/Scientific Advertising, by Claude Hopkins
    (Crane Books, Chicago)

Think And Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill (Fawcett Books, New York)

The Lazy Man's Way To Riches, by Joe Karbo (Karbo, Huntington
    Beach, CA)

Tested Advertising Methods, by John Caples (Reward Books, New
    York)

How To Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Caregie (Simon
    and Schuster, New York)

The Robert Collier Letter Book (Prentice Hall, New York)

Indeed these are some of the books he recommends.

He makes you forget about instant profit and look instead at lifetime value. Then you can make dramatic improvements on what you are using your budget for.

There should be a thread dedicated to nothing but some of his teachings. Pure Gold.
    I wholeheartedly agree.

Anyone could become a hundred times the marketer he or she is just by reading (and more importantly applying) some of his stuff, and studying the guides he recommends.

      Agree with both of you.

He's a real living example of how hard work and perseverance pays off eventually. He had it rough in his start, glad that he shares much of his experience

Undoubtedly, Jay Abraham is one of the masters of marketing. His audio workshop entitled, "How to get from where you are now, to where you want to be" is absolutely brilliant.

It's a brilliant course, I agree. Maybe his best course ever? He walks you through step by step what to do.

Looking forward to going thorough these. I only hear good things about Jay Abraham... however, ironically, I never see many of his products or receive a marketing message from him.

Hey guys. Brand new to this site.

I have paid the $12000 for Jays 1 year program. His JV program. It led me to a 1 year program thro his colleague Gordon Bizar. Best $24,000 I ever spent. When Jay talks about the strategy of preeminence and the power of joint ventures, and Gordon throws in the power to Buy businesses strategically, it gets me a lil bit turned on, not gonna lie. LOL.

Jays start from all the info I have.

He was 23, with a girlfriend, kid on the way, broke, unemployed. Wanted to go to the mall to get the newest hottest music on 8 track, but didn't have a vehicle. Saw an opportunity. Why not sell hot new music at convenience stores. Easier to get to. Upselling unexacting customers. 100% walk by advertising. (No one goes to 7-11 for music... but some do buy while there) Found a music wholesaler that would give him the excess 8-tracks on consignment. (They had 1000s in a warehouse just sitting there.) He made a deal with the conv store owner to lend him 3 sq ft of his store for 33% of the sale of a consignment product. Free money in a sense. Every week he would have the music dropped off. For easy math say he buys it for $1 the store sells it for $3 everyone make $1 per transaction. I cant remember if it was 2 or 3 years later but he was doing 100,000 sales a month. (put that into perspective, at $0.01/ sale he makes 4x more than my grandpa did. And he raised 13 kids) If I remember correctly he was a millionaire by 25 and in the 60s thats like having $50MM today. He had all the time in th world to learn anything and everything about being awesome in business. And proof/motivation that it works.

He was a student in Indiana. He met a professor, Dr. Weckesser. The prof ran a mailorder business. Jay was interested. The Prof hooked Jay up with a S.. CA Entrepreneur, an expert. The Entrepreneur agreed to take Jay "under his wing". Jay was a good student, learned much from his mentor. In fact, a great deal of his work, and that of his associates have seen their roots in the Mentor's teachings. His mentor was Harvey Brody.

In addition to Jay Abraham, other marketers who went to S. CA to learn from Harvey Brody include Joe Sugarman, Gary Halbert, Joe Karbo, Ben Suarex and a long list of successful Entrepreneurs. All have gone on to build their own businesses and added twists and turns to their knowledge gained from Mr. Brody and all will give a tip of their hat to one of the very best, least known publicly, and with students like those, a great teacher and mentor.

This is a thumbnail sketch. But Jay got his start in the Marketing Game via Harvey Brody.
