Feeding Your Mind: What to Read
At the time, I did not have a comprehensive reading list put together, but following that session I decided to compile one – well, actually three. The first list is the BBC's top 100 books, as voted by the public. It is a good list because the books all have some literary merit and a sufficient number of people felt they were valuable enough to be on the list.
When I did a part-time degree, some years ago, I remember discussing the merits of the canon of English Literature with one tutor. The second list is an attempt to list those classic books which, at least according to my tutor, are just good for you. His attitude was that they are books you should read whether you like them or not. I'm not sure I entirely agree, but nevertheless, it is useful to have a list of classics to dip into from time to time.
The third list represents what we might call wisdom literature. It includes various religious texts and other ancient writings that have been passed down the generations. If you use these three lists as a basis for choosing your reading, you certainly won't go far wrong. The books on these lists got there because, one way or another, they have merit and are worth reading.
Here is the list ...
