Am i too ambitious for my age?

Hi Guys,

my name is Michael and i am 16 years old. (Yeah i know, another 16 year old looking to get rich quickly over-night). Well no actually, i have been working on web programming, learning HTML, PHP. Studying managing web applications, i have set up 3 websites all in the past 3 years. So please dont mistake me for typical kid.

I have recently invested $$$$ which i saved up over the 3 years into a web business which i can outsource the work for, im hoping to hit $15k by the end of 2012.

I have a passion and a need to make money online, i dont know what it is. I have always been very ambitious from a young age, i thinkt he main reason for that is that i have a hug fear. A fear of failure, and a fear of not being able to support myself as i grow older and start a family. A fear that i might just end up in an ordinary job.

Sometimes i look at the people arounnd me including my friends and i wonder what they are doing with their lives. They spend the majority of their time at parties, drinking etc.
I dont think its necessarily bad, but i just cant imagine doing it. I dont really know how to relax.

I limit myself to around 6 hours sleep a night so that i can work a much as possible, although at weekends i do get a little bit more sleep.
Reading this back through it sounds like a mess, but the general idea i am trying to get across is... Am i too ambitious for my age?

Thanks,
-Michael

You have a great first name, since its the same one I have! I wish I was your age learning all this. I'm a lot older than you are and anxious to learn as well. Just keep going and don't let anyone stop your progress.

I am also a big believer in this quote. If you want something then go and get it, no matter how big it is.

Age really doesn't matter at all if you're starting a career on your own. But it's a lot better that you have started early just like me. I started at the age of 15, it took me a long way though, but its worth the time and effort that I spent to become successful.

    Michael,

You are at a great age to start business. Forget fear with action. Right from your post I can tell that you have the passion, the drive and the expertise to get what you want. It seems that you have bypassed the looks and foregone what other people want you to do.

Hang on to that drive that you have and just stay busy doing what you're doing. You are on the road to success.

Too young for this business? Not by a long shot. I commend you for being who you are and hope for the very best for your future.

There is no such thing as having too much ambition.

The biggest danger is having too much ambition for the wrong things. Remember this: you don't have to be rich to support your family. The quest to making millions will suck up all of your time. Sure, you'll have all the money in the world but you'll have spent all your time making it!

My advice is to try to figure out what you really want: time or money. It's hard to have both, at least at the start.

    Hi Micky,

I am 21 this year and I just started. I am so envious that you started at 16. I wished I started at 16. Unfortunately, I don't have much experience in web design nor html.
I am not sure what you can read out of these, maybe I'm just encouraging you.

I guess we should help each other out! haha.

    Regards,
    Kelvin

Age will only matter if you let it matter. Some people will be prejudiced against you because of your age. OK, so they are letting you know that it wouldn't be worthwhile for you to work with them. Other people are prejudiced against older people (45 and up, let's say). You can never make everyone happy, so don't try to. Work with people who respect you and what you bring to the table regardless of what your age happens to be.

This fear of mediocrity is a common motivator for those who often become extraordinary.

If you develop some skill, then there will be lots of people out there who will want to work with you. Also, if you intend to sell over the Web, you can remain relatively anonymous if you choose. For example, I don't care who fulfills my book orders on amazon: as long as I get what I asked for, it makes no difference to me who sends it. However, if I have had a good experience with a particular seller, I'll go with them again even if their price is a little higher.

Make sure you have an overall purpose for what you're doing. I think you are developing this. Also--and this comes from my own experience--don't get stuck in the trap of having this one thing being the only goal in your life. Some people have alluded to this above.

Let me stress it again: do what you do and enjoy it. But have other, enjoyable things that you do in your life as well. If you work your butt off at this and it ultimately doesn't turn out the way you want it to, you do NOT want to end up with the empty disappointment and bitterness that comes from getting so close to your big goal and it passing you by.

I spent four years of my life doggedly pursuing a goal that I thought was my life purpose. I devoted everything to it, even putting relationships and my career in a holding pattern to subordinate them to my larger goal. I got the expertise, support and experience that I needed...and the time came to reach for it...and it didn't happen. I was bitter for years about it. Literally years. I would like very much for others to avoid the same result.

All in all, you sound like a hard-working young person who will be a success by any measure, if you stick with it. Just make sure to stop and smell the roses from time to time.

    Hey Michael

I feel I can relate to you the most here and I'll let you into my story a little

I'm 18 years old and 2 years ago, like any 16 year old kid looking for a job, tried looking at the online world and I got sucked into the "make money online" niche. I fell into many traps of internet marketers as squeeze pages can be very convincing. I only ever bought a few ebooks that were of very low value, so I never put myself out of pocket. However I just researched the internet like mad and slowly began to figure out ways of how to make money online. 2 years later, I've built quite a few websites (I'm mainly a designer so I outsource the programming part) and I'm earning a comfortable 4 figures a year - might not be a lot to the big shots but for a student who has no mortgage, no family and no bills to pay - its 100% disposable income that I can spend on what I like, or save how I like.

With everything in life, you will bump into people on the internet who will not take you seriously due to your age. Just rise above them and show them who is boss. If they don't take you seriously, then they aren't worth your time in the first place. I often look at people my age and my friends as well and do wonder what they are doing with their lives, I do go to parties and go out drinking because Its a good way to have fun, I do believe that if you work very hard you deserve to treat yourself and half a break because it will refresh you and keep your mind fresh for work the next day (Unless you have a hangover )

But seriously - keep at it! Age has nothing to do with it, why would age affect anything, just because your 16 doesn't mean you cannot be ambitious, there is nothing that says there is a limit to your dreams

    So go for it!

I learned PHP when I was 10 (I'm 18 now) and was similarly ambitious. I still have the same ambition and fears you do from when I was young, even making a generally stable income. Stay ambitious and let your fears keep you determined and motivated to work hard at your dreams.

I started working when I was 12 (there was no internet back then!), but it has never hurt me. By the time I had a family, I had enough resources that I was able to stay home and watch TV with them in the morning when they were little.

Money is neither good nor bad, it depends on what you do with it. Chose wisely!

Although i do not particularly enjoy being young. I am not a typical teenager, i want to do the work now so that i can support my family when i am older, and give them whatever they want.

Youre on the right track man. I think all of the older people here that didnt start young wish that they had, including me. So take advantage of your age. I predict that by the time youre in youre 20's that youll have youre financial troubles eliminated. The majority of the billionares of the world had the same mindset as yourself so you shouldnt fear being unsuccessful. You have PLEANTY of time! Trust me.

      Thanks Dyer!

Nice to have your support, although its very easy for someone to say "you will be rich because of your mindset etc.". Its a very different thing doing it though :/

Its annoying seeing people post on these forums like "How can i make $5000 by tommorow?" - Thats maybe a slight exaggeration but its a little agitating seeing people say they want successful, when they are not willing to put int eh work to do it.

      Thanks,

Ambition is great at any age. If you've found something you love to do then, by all means, do it. Many people don't discover a passion until later and have to work just as hard as you are now...but they don't have as much energy as you do now!

I would advise you to stick with things. Ambition is great, and so is patience. Learn as much as you can from people who are actually doing what you want to do. Be wary of get rich quick promises. That's all I can think of at the moment, good luck to you!
