Do you believe that God & Law of attraction are the same thing?

In the movie "The Secret" they did mention that all cultures across the world give it several names such as "God", "The higher power" etc...Do you feel it's one and the same?

"God" (or whatever the label) is everything... so in that sense yes.

However - the Law of Attraction is simply a rule of the universe (like the law of gravity on the physical plane), and the rules are part of the whole but are not the whole.

Here's a little tongue-in-cheek, casual, cavalier start to an article ( "Is The Law of Attraction Attention Starved?" ) I wrote for our Masters of The Secret Members in 2007.

( this should give you enough info to know my answer to your question :-)

      = = = = = = =

"We luv ya Big-daddy LOA ... and can't think of any other LAW to cherish, adore and fondle with during these late night rendezvous."

[ Pan to the LOA dressed in a silk robe, kicking back on his Futon with a $100 cigar in his mouth and his faithful groupies leaving in the wee hours of the morning saying their goodbyes ]

Yep, just another glorious evening for the Mack-Daddy of all spiritual laws (currently anyway).

And, before he finishes his cigar, he looks up at his Mantel and bows down to honor a picture of The Secret logo enshrined in GOLD.

      The Secret
has amalgamated itself to the Law of Attraction (LOA) thru grassroots, kick-butt, guerilla marketing (Look, let's all just bow-down to this feat. It's impressive).

Like we often inaccurately say "give me some Kleenex," when our nose is dripping with snot (Tissue is the real product - Kleenex, the brand), the masses are going to eventually be saying, "I've slurped down, and came to terms with The Secret," when asked how they learned to regulate, shape, and modify their life. After all, that's why the LOA was put into existence, operating behind-the-scenes, for us in the first place:

Like our liver, which is intimately involved in almost every aspect of the body's processes, the Law of Attraction operates, without demand, like a master metaphysical organ -- it automatically, based off your flow and concentration of 3-prong energy (mental, emotional, spiritual), attracts or removes people, places, things, and circumstances into your experience.

We'd be in a constant changeless state without it.

Is there any question, in your mind, as to why this LAW was the FOCUS of the FIRST edition of The Secret ?

Yet, still, there's something that's just gotta be mentioned here (the rub that's hardly been talked about lately): Even after all that glorious revelry - even though it is indeed an essential universal law, it's still only ONE fricken LAW ..... My gaaaaaaawwwwwdd.

Let's get this thing off the totem pole please and realize, just like the body needs a Heart AND a Liver (not to mention a bunch of other organs) to function with grace and expansion, er, so does our energetic-spiritual (soul) body.

Gessssssh .... ya'd think by now the poor neglected "Law of Faith" would come creeping out behind the dark corner and yell, "Hey, hey, hey ... who started the crazy non-stop party without me? Aut hummm, I've been in a peaceful, super-restful, hibernating slumber over here, well, just because I never needed all the attention. But, now that my buddy the LOA is getting all the wet kisses on the cheek, I'm ready for a damn drink out of the punch bowl."

I must grow my spirituality a lot more.

I think with so *many* definitions about what/who god really is...it can get very frustrating as to where to turn for guidance.

That's just part of the journey.

Keep learning and you'll come to a solid conclusion. Although I said I'm not sure I believe in God I actually do. Because I've had a lot of spiritual experiences. I'm just angry that I've been through so many terrible things. And confused why I don't receive any guidance anymore.

I recommend prayer because in the past that's helped me connect with "Higher Intelligence." What works for me is being humble. I personally don't believe that God is something like a Universal slot machine that will give you everything you want just because. I believe that he wants to best for you however there are certain Laws (if you like) that must be obeyed. And humility has always worked for me.

When I've been in trouble and suffering I've often experienced things which have strengthened my belief in God however I don't get that anymore which kind of makes me feel alone in the World.

The point of the post is to keep searching and to try prayer. Like learning about every subject it's often confusing in the beginning but makes much more sense further down the road.

      Good luck.

At the moment I don't believe in LOA and I'm not 100% sure I believe in God either. So my answer is "No." I often change my mind about things though. Personally I think LOA works because of sound psychological principles. It would be a disaster if people could really manifest external things and experiences because there are a lot of bad people out there.

The fact that you are honestly searching for God (or whatever the label) is the most important step! If you are earnest in your desire, it will be met... I mean, thats the LOA

I think it is important to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY of our own spiritual journey. Too often, people will "outsource" their spiritual education to others and then sit back and wait for it to happen... and then wonder why it doesn't.

This is like the patient who doesn't understand their own disease, and expects the doctor to cure them. They might get a temporary reprieve of symptoms, but if they don't change what caused it, then they are not really cured.

We must take responsibility for our spiritual health as we should for our physical health... obviously this assumes that you have the goal of being healthy and happy.

    Consider this:
    1. God is omnipresent - present in all times and places
    2. God is omnicient - all knowing
    3. God is omnipotent - all powerful
So - God is "in" everything, and is expressed in every moment. As far away as the stars and as close as your own heartbeat.

Be careful! The map is NOT the territory... the menu will not satisfy your hunger... the word "water" will not make you wet.

"God" is just a label or word... which represents that which we discuss.
"Its like a finger pointing the way to the moon - don't look at the finger or you will miss of that heavenly glory!"

When you find doubt or questions in your search, remember this! The God that we talk about, discuss, read about, argue about, KILL about, etc... is not the real God.

God can be experienced, but can not be put in a box.

This is my own invocation for my meditation and prayer. It contains the LOA, but its mostly a reminder to let go, allow and have faith. I hope you find it as useful as I have!

"There is only One power, which can no be contained by words,
Which exists in complete harmony and total fulfillment.
We are all extensions of this power, therefor
We all exist in complete harmony and total fulfillment.
In accordance with the laws of Free Will and Random Chance,
    SO IT IS."

IMO law of attraction is a convenient packaging of simple, easily explained principles of human nature. it is one of the few things i've read or seen that i find to be complete garbage.

of course thinking and focusing on something gives results, but what goes on in your head at any given time has no physical effect on something far away... remember, IMO

And even when you ask, you don't get it because your motives are all wrong--you want only what will give you pleasure

When I want something I seek God for my answers. I check my motives. That is the secret.

    OpIvy -

I would agree that the way ALOT of people "package" it, it is garbage... Some people are out there "Selling" the concept, but don't really understand it.

As for what you think not having a physical effect - thats a grey area. If thats what you believe, then the will be right

However, Quantum Physics (you know, science?) teaches that the mere act of observing something changes it... that means that on the quantum level when we observe an atom we are affecting it...

Though it is not quite as immediate, the same is true on our level of existence. We could spend days and days discussing possible reasons why (and if you want to, just start a new thread and lets get going , but we know that there is something to it.

Have you ever been somewhere and felt something... only to look up and have someone staring at you? Its because when they observe you with intensity, you pick up on that vibe.

Also, consider that from a certain perspective (which is a quite popular one, and just as valid) there is no "physical" reality. There is only our own interpretation of sensory input and we exist each in our own universe. Thats why two people can observe the same situation and "see" something different.

All of that is really meaningless, though... because it can't be proven OR disproven. Not really anyway. It is what I believe and what I (and many others before and since) have experienced.

You can believe whatever you like, and thats TOTALLY VALID. There is nothing wrong with it (and thanks for putting in your 2 cents).

I would suggest, though, that since we can believe whatever we like, believing that we can "manifest" and influence/co-create our reality is alot more fun than just existing as a passive observer.

And really - whats the point of this grand game if not to enjoy life and have fun!

    thanks for your comment!!!!

    kindest regards,
    Ron

PS maybe we could formulate an experiment to see if LOA could produce some type of interesting result?

No, I don't think they are the same. In fact far from it.

The LOA teaches in the power of positive thinking, nothing more, nothing less. To 'equate' this to being God, is to say that God is some kind of 'Sugar Daddy' that wants the individual to have anything and everything they want.

This is contrary to the nature of the God I know.

The God of the Bible is explicit in that he say to "be holy as He is holy". Can this be said of most people today? He also demands obedience to His commandments which is obedience to Him. Do we see this in most people today?

To think that I can have anything I want, without understanding the basis of wanting, can mean I can get more evil than good.

Maybe the problem is that too many people want to use the LOA for means of self gain, instead of things that matter.

So basically no, they are not the same.

    Thanks,

Law Of Attraction is just a name that has been given to a timeless unalterable universal law, Just like naming a Lion - Lion.

It is only a law like sowing and reaping, etc. there are laws of higher dimension than the Law of attraction which are:-

      Law of Faith
      Law of Hope
      Law of Love

And the greatest Universal Law is Law of Love.

God is bigger than all these laws, for he instituted them and commanded them to do their job. God is the invisible Substance that fills the whole creation.

God cannot be measured for He is TOO BIG.

He cannot be contained, for He Fills every space and void. Hence no one can runaway from HIM.

He is the Law & The Law of Attraction is not GOD.

I think that this is an important point. Alot of "gurus" are teaching that if you believe/focus on the things you want that they will be given to you. This is a great way to sell books and courses (and technically it can work that way), but there are a few problems:

      1) People tend to focus on what they don't have... which manifests more "not having." Its a mental shift that they just aren't making.

      2) People also tend to focus on manifesting things that don't solve their problems or meet their needs.

Alot of folks think that all they need is more money, and this will solve their problems. While its true that monetary wealth is very useful and can solve many problems, its personal power (spiritual wealth) that they truly crave. They just don't know it.

These people are striving to mask the symptoms instead of curing the root.

I have people all the time tell me that they want more money, when really what they truly want is not to worry about money. They want their families to be healthy and happy, and they want to spend their time enjoying life.

So - the "trick" is to manifest or attract "life enjoyment." If you really need money for that, then it will come. If you need a relationship, it will come. If you need a teaching, it will come.

There are dozens of stories of people who have won large sums (hundreds of thousands or more) in the lottery only to end up WORSE off a short time later. Bringing in more money/energy does not help if you can't flow with what you already have. Its like having a car with horribly aligned wheels - the fster you go, the more it shakes and shakes... until something breaks.

LOA is a convenient way to remind ourselves to focus on what is important.

God (or insert your own label here) is much, much larger.

Thanks to all who are contributing and sharing!

Thanks for the post, ryanman! It's sparked some great comments. In direct response to your inquiry, I would have to answer in the negative. I do not believe that God and the LoA are the same thing.

In response to some of the other posters here, I would disagree with their perspective that the LoA doesn't exist. And, also disagree with other posters who have offered that God does not exist.

Now, having said that I feel it important to step away from those comments and suggest my agreement with others who have at least implied that both the LoA and God are experienced personally. They can only be known, or not known, personally.

So, for me to say that both God and the LoA exist, and do so independently of one another, is what I personally accept. That does not require anyone else to accept the same belief set.

    No,
God and 'The Secret' are not the same thing.
God created all the laws of the universe. He created gravity, he created fusion and fission, he created inertia and every law that governs the way we move and live in the universe.
He also created the Law of Attraction (which is "The Secret")

Personally, I have begun to see God in everything and through everything. This is not a traditional Christian perspective though it is entirely compatible with the Bible; and I think many people do also see God in that way.

Once you have that perspective, a good deal of the New Thought ideas do fit into the notion of God. When Wallace D Wattles speaks of the 'Thinking Stuff' or 'Universal Mind' or 'Supreme Intelligence', he uses the terms interchangably with the term 'God'.

The difference between Visualising your outcomes and prayer, for me, is very tenuous - and perhaps even one and the same thing.

I think they're different. Because with The Law Of Attraction a person is concentrating on something they want. And with prayer a person can ask for forgiveness. They're thinking about something they want to be forgiven for rather than something they want. I've personally experienced that and it's much different than The Law Of Attraction.

I agree with ZigZag in his statement "Because with The Law Of Attraction a person is concentrating on something they want." We can spend a lot of time concentrating on we want, but it's not a 100%guarantee we're going to get it...and this is where God comes in...because what we WANT may not BE what we NEED for our soul's purpose or life path. I think people spend more time thinking/wishing about they want rather than be thankful for what they already have. If what "I" want isn't granted then I have FAITH that there is a reason for it. Sometimes we find that we are being guided toward traveling down a path other than the one we have "planned" for ourself. I put effort into laying the foundation and constructing the road I want to follow toward achieving what I want, but I also remain open to all unlimited possibilities available and TRUST that I will be guided toward that which is best for my soul's growth and purpose during this lifetime...being thankful for all the gifts and love that are a part of my life NOW.

There is a movie called "The Secret Things of God" which delves into this topic.

          This is what I believe...

We are always attracting whether by default or by choice. Now...when using the Law of Attraction to manifest good...for me...this only works with fervent "faith"ful prayer with love and gratitude to God expecting that whatever I am seeking will manifest according to His will. Action is necessary...and Miracles do happen! But this is for another thread...

Regarding evil...God gave us all free will. Think negative... dark thoughts and you will attract like results. You will be broadcasting at a lower vibration...negative energy. Some people use their free willl to do bad things...and they will be judged by God....again...this is what I believe.

It is up to us how we use our free will. Just like good seeds with proper planting and attention will yield good harvest...so will good thoughts...

God is Love and all is Love..God is ALL!

          Peace!

          Sonia

BTW..The Secret movie has at least opened the eyes of many to new possibilities..but has also made the LOA seem like a "magic wand" that has worked magic for those in the movie leaving many wondering why their golden parachute has not dropped yet from the heavens.

They certainly had a great crew that knew how to pull all the stops to make it a hypie...sensational and extremely lucrative production.

Some of the actors created a $2000 program to teach "seekers" the big secret! Granted...while they are using public domain materials they have added their own inspirational and motivational materials.

          • The thing that both God and the LOA share is that they are both vague and ambiguous.

God is known by many names and faces around the world, and is interpreted differently by different people. God is an abstract concept dreamed up by a tiny brained patriarchical and hierarchical society that has an emotional need (lack) for something greater as an explanation.

The LOA is vaguely explained in 'The Secret' with differing interpretations of what it is and how it works. The LOA is an abstract concept that says you have to 'Think', no 'Feel' before 'it' happens, it always works (apparently) and if it doesn't work for you, you are doing it wrong, even though you have never been given explicit 'how-to' instructions.

The LOA is also another aspect of the tiny brained society that is based on the egoic feeling of 'lack', which can only be resolved through the accumulation of material things (wealth).

The LOA is no law, it is the 21st century version of 'Think and Grow Rich' or 'Positive Thinking' and an extension of the philosophy often eschewed by the raft of wannabe (direct response) marketing clones who promise that you don't even have to do anything to achieve your dreams or heart's desire, because 'The Universe Owes it to You'.

What the LOA is, is a brilliant piece of marketing that makes exquisite use of all of the subtle human psychological triggers, and delivers them in an irresistible package using the 'definite article' to make it sound more important than anything else (example The Holocaust rather A Holocaust).

You can sit around for as long as you want dreaming about cheques coming through the post, nice cars, big houses, a huge income and a trophy wife. But all that sitting around dreaming (or positive thinking/feeling) means jack sh*t, unless you go out and do the work or take the action that is necessary to accumulate all of this stuff.

Another example of the American Dream - "You deserve wealth, and the Universe owes it to you!"

All of course based upon the false assumption that only with all of the above (money, cars, houses etc.) can you truly be happy.

Do you want to know 'The Real Secret'?

I'm a Christian first of all, so realize that. But this isn't time to preach (although I'll accept any PMs with questions [after 15 or 30 posts, whichever it is]).

You have to have the right mindset to succeed in God's eyes. You don't hear about David going to face Goliath with all these thoughts of failure, do you?

I believe your mindset plays a huge part with God, but it's not a way to get anything you want. He can say 'no,' 'not yet,' and 'OK' just as easily as He can to your prayers or anything else. But, how can God give you anything or allow you to ... do work for Him (isn't always opening a ministry or going to unknown places to preach), if you're not willing/ready?

I've pondered this a bit, because - obviously - there are people who "succeed" with illegal activities/want to reach their goals for the wrong reasons, and who despise Him. I believe this could be the work of Satan, because sin (lust, greed, illegal activities, etc.) puts a wedge between you and God, hardening your heart.

Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory; and he said to Him, "All these things will I give You, if You fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Begone, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.'"

That was when Jesus was tempted by the devil in the Bible.

I really haven't researched LOA, and I haven't successfully "summoned" an apple or anything... but I believe it holds truth, and I hope that it is of the Holy Spirit and no other when it works for all of you.

    God bless & good luck,
    Jesse

edit, it appears LOA isn't what I thought, reading posts above (I tend to just reply to topics like these). But nonetheless, I believe your mindset plays a huge part in your success.

Love...Love...Love...Our Creator is Love Personified! Wouldn't a Loving Creator, create a Loving Universe/Cosmos?....and place within it principles and laws in action. That when properly applied, had the potential to manifest all of his creations dreams and desires?.....hmmmmm. I think so!

Nope, God is God. The law of attraction is far more different. It is a law for attraction that deals with partnership.

I don't believe that God and the LOA are the same thing at all. The LOA is an arbitrary law set up by people who endeavor to believe in it. I believe there are way too many circumstances beyond our control to summon this physical law and avail it to our will when we desire to manifest it.

I do believe that your thoughts are likely to have an effect on what comes back to you in your immediate surroundings. Like the timeless book, "As a Man Thinketh," by James Allen, I believe your thoughts can affect your life.
Maybe the real secret is we become what we think about. Our lives could be considered self-fulfilling prophecies to an extent. I think that your caretakers and peers can have a profound effect on who you think you are. If you grow up under constant scrutiny and criticism, you will learn to doubt yourself. If you grow up in a relaxed encouraging atmosphere, you will learn to trust yourself. I think a child's early formative years have the most profound effect on what "secret" will manifest itself in their life. While an off-handed remark to a child may seem of no consequence to you at the time, it can live in that child's mind forever. How many of you run a litany of thoughts through your mind daily that echoes the ruminations of your parents and peers?
My point: we are not only what we believe we are; but what others have taught us to believe about ourselves. Check the stats for the number of people who have or are now receiving psychotherapy. Maybe we are all a little too idealistic in our belief that we can so easily manifest our destiny.

I think its important to point out that the WORD "God" is just a label and it represents the infinite... that which can not be contained.

LOA on the other hand, is a HUMAN-MADE description of how part of the universe works. Laws are human made descriptions...

Example - gravity existed before we did, and the "law of gravity" is our way to describing it and PREDICTING how it will influence things.

The Infinite Divine can not be contained or predicted, while LOA is a description of how the Divine/Universe operates.

One thing has nothing to do with the other. The law of attraction works this way whether you believe it or not. When you clear your mind of past beliefs, (like thinking that you should be working) the mind acts like a magnet, attracting people around you so you can help them.

After you began to help other people all kinds of good stuff comes your way. Surprisingly, most people don't appear to understand that concept. Religion and God should not come in the play here. Whether you believe in God or not, should remain personal and stay that way.

      Jimmy.

This is where I got a bit confused. Some say that whether you believe in god or not...You will still have a judgement day. And the same thing goes for the law of attraction.

Guess there are some things we might never know.

They are very different from one another. One explains how things works and the other is Man's greatest manifestation.

Most certainly, I agree that applying the law of attraction cuts across all religions. It is more about our inner connection to the divine. It can be just about any religion. If you do like what you have in your life, you've been successfully using the Law of Attraction. And whether you believe in this or not, this is working all day every day in your life.

consider this all the principles that LOA and the Secret can be found in Bible, so can all other things that motivation speakers talk about, take a look in the Bible and you will find it all.

It's amazing how all these people reword and package up and sell principles found in the bible and make tons of money from it.

You know where the best seminars to go every week are that help you with life and business? it's call church and it's free!

It's even more amazing how the bible packages up and sells principles found in dozens of pagan religions, and people like you can still get pissy about folks recycling the bible.

The bible isn't anything particularly special. It's one account of how the world works. The world worked that way before the bible, and it will work that way even if the bible is forgotten. Telling people how the world works isn't ripping off the bible any more than writing the bible was ripping off the world.

I believe there are universal powers that are in play that will make the LOA work. For me I am not a believer in GOD but I do believe there is a higher power or force in the universe at work. I also believe that I can control or utilise that force by chanelling my thoughts.

Which is why I'll only say one thing to this :

"I believe that the Law of Attraction is one of the ways God works."

Although I have never read this report, Through personal situations I have learned that God's Laws reign supreme. LOA is not really a law at all since thru Christ and God all things are possible. Dealing with the spirit realm there is only one law, which is the only way to the Father is thru Christ. And Christ's commandment was to Love one another.

I personally don't believe that you can attract something just by thinking about it!
I did all the Abraham stuff - used to be on their forum etc.

I believe that God created us with inbuilt radars that can be now packaged as Law of Attraction. No doubt Quantum physics has proved that there is an intelligence beyond our senses.

LOA calls it source energy and its already waiting for us - I wonder why it should wait when I desire it it should come to me why after all I am thinking about it. But I guess I'm not in alignment and the rest of the suckers on this earth who fail to understand it!

I wonder if all the Super Gurus on WF attracted all their riches or actually worked for it. I would go with the latter. Its all good to be positive but when your dreams are in your head that's where they stay, I find Abraham Hicks advocate taking inspired action let it in - ok!

Ill take no action universe please deliver me some CPA sales this week! Will update to see if LOA worked!
