Three Years of Unsuccessful Internet Marketing has Finally Paid Off

Hello fellow warriors!

I am pleased to share with everyone that after three years of striving to become an internet marketer, with little success, I finally feel like things are starting to come together.

I've spent the last three years of my llife learning everything I could about internet marketing from keyword research, article marketing, seo, social marketing, website creation, ppc, e-zines, you name it I've researched it.

But even with all my "research" into all of these topics, I still (until very recently) have never found any success with any of the the methods I was learning.

I now know that my biggest problem was that I had a very bad case of "shiny object syndrome." From the very first day that I discovered how "easy" it was to make money online, I wanted to know exactly how I could do it for myself.

Unfortunately I fell into the cycle of immidiately purchasing any IM product that came out promising the easiest path to online success. Looking back I wish that I would have had the sense to stick with one system long enough to make it work for me, but at the same time I am happy that I took that route because now I have a good general knowledge about every aspect of internet marketing.

It wasn't until I finally found this forum that my knowledge and work eithics finally started to benefit me.

My hopes are that by sharing this short success story with you, you will see that if you really put your mind to it you WILL become successful at internet marketing. Trust me, after three years of failure I was ready to throw in the towel, but I'm really glad I didn't because now I'm finally starting to see results.

If I could offer any advice to newbies who feel that nothing will ever work for them it would be the following:

1. Find a good mentor - Trust me on this one. Trying to tackle internet marketing on your own, no matter how good of products you've come across, is very hard. A mentor can point you in the right direction, or give you pointers on how to make things work for you if you're having trouble in a particular area.

2. Avoid the "shiny object syndrome" - If you find yourself purchasing every single WSO of the Day you can afford, or scraping Clickbank just for products that bring a lot of hype but never any results stop now! Find ONE system that appeals the most to you and stick to it. MAKE IT WORK. Now, this isn't to say that you should just stick with any system you've found. Because there is a lot of garbage out there and sticking to a system that is crap won't do you any good either.

3. Network, network, network - the more people you network with, the more you will learn about other peoples' failures and successes. Also, if you network enough and can bring something to the table JV opportunities practically throw themselves at you!

4. DON'T GIVE UP - Like I said before, I had been at this for three years before I ever saw any succcess at all. Now that things are finally coming together I couldn't be happier. I am making money doing something I truly enjoy and could see myself doing this until the day I die.

Internet marketing has changed my life in such a positive way. If you're a total newb, or have been in the game for a while but still have had no success, just stick to it and things will work out eventually.

I'd also like to thank all of you. The Warrior Forum has been the biggest catalyst towards my success as an internet marketer and I only wish that I had found years ago. Thanks for all of your help warriors and I can't wait to meet some of you in NC in March!

Excellent and reassuring to hear. I think three years is around the average amount of time a new internet marketer needs to persist before seeing any considerable results.

Pretty Awesome! Yeah 2-3 years seems to be the turn-a-round point for many people. I think it's because everyone "thinks" they need to know "exactly" what to do and when, but that cycle never ends because everyday you're getting hit with ANOTHER offer.

Best thing to do is implement the things you've learned. Stick with one type of marketing whether it be affiliate marketing, ppc, cpa, etc and master that. Don't skip around or else you'll NEVER see any results and end up quitting.

That's just some of my advice, but what many people need to realize is you'll learn mostly by taking action, NOT just by reading an ebook or watching videos, because at the end of the day trial and error plays a major part in this business. Sometimes things might work sometimes they don't.

IM is always changing and if you try soo hard to "perfect" that affiliate site or whatever the case maybe, and you don't see results you'll just get discouraged and give-up.

But instead, try looking at what you did wrong. Did you pick the wrong keywords to start out with? Do you have too "thin" of a site? Is your competition too strong? How is your content? How is your On-Page SEO? Do you have a well structured site? A lot does come into play, so will you master Internet marketing right off the bat? probably not until you've learned some new strategies and put them to use and the more you do, the more you'll learn.

Ok well that's my 5 cents!

Glad things finally turned around for you.

Congrats on your success! It's really hard to make it in this field, in my opinion. I've been struggling for about 2 years now. I've had some ups but a lot of downs, but I'm definitely not giving up. I really like what I'm doing now and it's nice to hear people being successful with IM. Congrats again!

Internet marketing and making money online is harder than what it seems at first. There are plenty of options and things you can do and offer online and make money off it. But the main problem, ussually, is never having enough traffic and never having enough visitors to your site(s). You could have the most awesome website / blog in the whole universe, but if it only gets 5 visitors a day, it will not go anywhere. Traffic is what ultimately will define your e-presence.

    Thanks for giving me hope!

I also have been 'doing' it for 3years, hardly even touching it for 1 year while I was going through the same learning curve and falling for every other 'new' program I came accross..I think I am finally making some progress.

Thing, is I haven't found a 'mentor' as you suggest. Other than outsourcing some tasks, (which I haven't done), reading forums and learning from more experienced people, (like you) attending seminars, etc, how do I find a good mentor?

    Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing Eric. I am at the 2 year mark and totally agree with your assessment.

I would say about the same things as you with a little different spin:

    1. Write down your goals and time lines and be very specific, revisit them often
    2. Be accountable to someone - coach, mentor, partner
    3. Focus on one maybe two avenues in IM to make money and buy shiny objects only if they are related to those two things
    4. Get training
    5. Keep going, rarely do we start something new and have immediate success, there's a learning curve
    6. Celebrate - small and big successes
    7. Give back - pay it forward

Congratulations, Eric, on sticking with it - now you are getting to see the fruits of your labor . . . . with more on the way, I'm sure. Woo.

    Best wishes,

    Teri

Nice Post, you are right that persistance is the main criteria for success.

It was interesting it reminded me of a podcast of Pat Flynns that I listened to yesterday and the guest was the Podcast Answerman guy. He said that it took him about two and a half years before he was really successful. And that didn't include the two and half years he was doing at as a hobby.

Of course those 5 years lead to being able to have $10000 weeks.

So only 3 years in you could consider yourself ahead of the game.

Great to hear you have finally made your breakthrough.

I love the 4 pointers that you layout for all to learn from, they are so true and with point 1 completed and determined to stick with point 4, the only ones to grasp now are connecting with others and of course ignoring all those great offers from all you brilliant marketers that pull me away from my chosen path.

    Very good!

Persistence is important. After I had done IM for 2 years, my friends asked "are you still doing that? you haven't made any good money from it..." and some said "If it's so easy, why isn't everyone doing it"... But I had never said it was easy! It has now been 3,5 years since I started with IM. My friends are very suprised that I'm still doing it, and probably think I'm wasting my time.

Some of my friends are now taking higher education, and believe the only way one get successful is by luck, or very hard work with low chances of success. They are too lazy to have high goals. They are spending their free time on computer games.
I'm spending my free time working on IM-projects.
I want to achieve financial freedom, so I can have a lot of free time in a few years or later in life, when they are working 40 hour weeks.

People in this IM communitiy are more open-minded than most people.

    KEEP ON KEEPING ON!

WOW, I hadn't checked this thread since the first day I posted it and thank you all for the awesome responses!

I try to make it a rule not to spend too much time in the forum, otherwise my work suffers from it! True, there is a lot of good information here but you can definitely get lost reading the endless amount of posts in here and that won't do you any good if your goal is to make money! lol

For those that asked how exactly I did it, or what I did differently I'll share as much as I can within the scope of this thread.

Now, keep in mind that "success" is different for everyone. My idea of success was just to make enought money to quit my day job and focus on Internet Marketing full time. I didn't even care if I had to "leave one full time job for another." Internet marketing for me is a passion. Even if I could widdle the work required down to a few hours a week, I'd be working at it all day long anyway.

With that being said, the real reason I was able to make the jump is because I've been hired on (by another warrior) to be essentially his full time assistant. Ok, like I said there are diffferent definitions of success. To me, this is absolutely a success.

I'm being put on payroll, making MORE per hour than I was making at my previous job and I get to spend at least 40 hours a week doing what I love. I get access to the tools that I couldn't afford before, learn how they work, and how to ensure they are put to use properly to ensure a successful campaign. Now, when I'm not working for my employer on his campaigns I get to apply what I've been paid to learn to my own campaigns. I don't think it gets any better than that.

I was fortunate enough to connect with a successful warrior on this forum who knew my story (about marketing for three years with no success) and wanted to help make sure I continued on. He alreay outsources a lot of work, but there is just some things that cannot be outsourced, or that could be done better if paid at a better rate. So that's why he brought me on.

I actually have a really good knowledge of what it takes to make a marketing campaign successful (because I did get something out of all the shiny objects I bought). I just never had the resources (time or money) to put my knowledge to use. Now I get to use my employers resources to continue learning and doing at the same time.

I guess the biggest thing I could reccomend to anyone who is where I was at just a few months ago is connect with as many like minded people as possible. I love skype, I am on skype a lot and I like to connect with other marketers and see what is working for them. A lot of them shared what is working for them, and I put my two cents in about how it could possible be better, or what I really liked about what they were already doing. Be careful though, you don't want to make it seem as though you're a know-it-all. Just offer what advice you can, and give kudos where it is due.

That's actually how I managed to land this position. I found my employer on skype and we just started talking marketing. He knew my story, but also saw that I was no dumby when it came to marketing. He mentioned one time that he wished he had someone working for him that could do some of the stuff he does on a daily basis so he could have more time to come up with product ideas.... well that's kind of how it evolved.

Thanks again for all of the encouraging words. To all those that are struggling, stick with it and you will see results. Feel free to hit my up on skype anytime, I love chatting about marketing with everyone that I can!

Good story Eric. This is the way I look at making money online. If thousands, if not millions, of people are really making money then why not me?

The concept of using the Internet to make money is a proven one. The concept of "me" making money is not. It is up to me to change that.
