2 Poems That Keep Me Going

32 replies
I find that it can sometimes get frustrating working on your own business and keeping at it when things don't work out the way that you want them to. These are two of many poems that remind me not to quit and that I ultimately choose how I react to any given situation. What poems and quotes keep YOU going?

Don't Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

    Very nice poems you got here, especially Don't Quit. It reminds me on how I almost quite my IM career until my good ol' friend told me that I should never quit no matter how many times I fall.

    Awesome find, Verice

    It's amazing how we can draw strength from the simplest things. All we need to relax and be refreshed is a moment of silence and something small and beautiful.

    We've all been there. I'm glad that your friend was supportive. It can get tough to find your footing in the IM world.

      Verice, thanks so much for providing those two poems.

      I especially love Invictus. Thanks for typing it up here, I’ve been wanting to read that one.

      I just came across a poem at a Silva Manifestation seminar that I took this Friday and Saturday.

      Here it is:

      Do It Anyway by Kent Keith.

      People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered;
      forgive them anyway.
      If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
      be kind anyway.
      If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
      succeed anyway.
      If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
      be honest and frank anyway.
      What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
      build anyway.
      If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
      be happy anyway.

      The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
      do good anyway.
      Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
      give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

      You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God;
      it was never between you and them anyway.

      Love to know what you think of that one.

    Love Invictus!

    I also really like Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" ...

    Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
    And sorry I could not travel both
    And be one traveler, long I stood
    And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

    Then took the other, as just as fair,
    And having perhaps the better claim,
    Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
    Though as for that the passing there
    Had worn them really about the same,

    And both that morning equally lay
    In leaves no step had trodden black.
    Oh, I kept the first for another day!
    Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
    I doubted if I should ever come back.

    I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
    Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
    I took the one less traveled by,
    And that has made all the difference.

    Awesome poem! Whenever I feel less motivated at times, I continue working towards my goal, even if it is only a little action I take for that day, for example, even an hour or less for that day, where I am so low in motivation, because my belief is that unsuccessful people go through life always waiting for the inspiration, and only take action when they feel like it. Successful people are just the opposite. They constantly take action and very often make more mistakes than the unsuccessful people ever do. However, the successful people are always moving forward by taking action, whilst the unsuccessful people just stay still. So, I am sure we all want to have the greatest success, so keep on moving.

    I've been drawn to these words since the first time I heard them. Thanks for reminding me about the empowering belief that the individual really does have the ability to be able to create their own life.

    Great poems, Verice, I'm familiar with them- in fact, "Don't Quit" happens to be one of my favorites.

    And- "Never, never, never, never give up."
    Winston Churchill

    "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost is another old favorite; and I'm with you Trisha, on successful people keeping on moving forward by taking action.

    Love "Do it Anyway" , Natalie. These works are like old friends, very comforting and uplifting.

    The Victor

    by: C. W. Longenecker

    If you think you are beaten, you are.
    If you think you dare not, you don't.
    If you like to win but think you can't,
    It's almost a cinch you won't.
    If you think you'll lose, you're lost.
    For out in the world we find
    Success begins with a fellow's will.
    It's all in the state of mind.
    If you think you are out classed, you are.
    You've got to think high to rise.
    You've got to be sure of your-self before
    You can ever win the prize.
    Life's battles don't always go
    To the stronger or faster man.
    But sooner or later, the man who wins
    Is the man who thinks he can.

    I'm normally not a huge fan of poetry but provide it in the right context and it is moving.

    The 2 lines that stuck out to me in the Invictus poem was:
    I am the master of my fate:
    I am the captain of my soul.

    Always good to keep that on the forefront and realize you control your destiny.
