What's the most important thing life has taught you about yourself?

As the title says, I'm intrigued about the lessons life teaches us.

For me, it's that I can do it, In 1990, at the peak of the last recession, I left a secure job in the civil service to become self-employed. People told me I couldn't do it but I survived that recession and am doing well in this one - I have been blessed!

What's the most important lesson life has taught you?

Life has taught me that most things don't matter in the grand scheme of things. Whatever your difficulty, if it doesn't kill you, it will make you stronger.

Will - you are so right - my mother died when I was young, which has taught me a sense of perspective!

Robbie- careful saying that - it's not exactly popular these days, with people wanting success without effort!

Aaron (great to find another Bristolian!) - summed up perhaps as "where there's breath there's hope"? I like that!

      Thanks guys

This is a bit off topic, but I just wanted to say: Kelly Clarkson!

Her song, "Stronger" is great! I love the line, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!"

I have learnt over time that with life you need to play the game...you only get out what you put in!

    Hi Nic,
Thank you for posting this question as it is very important to remember the good and the bad lessons that life has to teach us.

I feel that the single most profound lesson I learned was while I was volunteering for hospice. I had been visiting an elderly man for over 4 months and its funny how quickly two strangers can become companions when there is something as imminent as death bringing them together. On our last visit I noticed that he was very agitated and was trying to tell me something. I cut our session short to let him rest, but for the life of me I don't know why I didn't say a formal goodbye directly to him, but to his family. As soon as I got in my car I knew he was going to die and to my everlasting shame I did not turn that car around and tell him goodbye. He did die four days later.

That lesson taught me to always tell the people that you know and care about goodbye every time you part.

    Frith,
    Kayla

Life has taught me that if you pull yourself back up and keep moving forward every time you get knocked down, you will be rewarded. The reward might be success, it might be greater strength, or skill, or simply greater confidence – but you will be rewarded in some way.

I suppose the principle is, "You never fail until you stop trying."

    That's a loaded question!

Some great answers already....I think theres plenty more to learn but the main thing is that you have to not take yourself to seriously, but work hard, have fun, and appreciate what you have.

Kay - I know what you mean. I never had the chance to say goodbye to my mum when she died - closure is so important.

pstrachocki - you are absolutely right. Your quote echoes the famous Henry Ford quote: "Whether you believe you can or that you cannot, you're right!"

GT - thanks for reminding us of that simple but often forgotten truth!

SDotSpells - Have fun - now you're talking!

A few life lessons I've learned:

    1) Fear is not real. It feels real, it looks real, but it's almost always an illusion in the mind, and it does not control me, unless I choose to let it. I've learned a variety of techniques to reduce or remove fear and when I experienced my first conscious shift out of fear, I realized from that moment that I COULD live the life I desire.

    2) Being happy or sad, rich or poor, fat or thin, shy or outgoing, etc is totally a choice. I've lost 30 pounds almost effortlessly last year, I used to be tremendously unhappy years ago, and less than 6 months ago, I went from being thousands of dollars in debt, not knowing how I was pay to 2 months rent in a matter of days and a no more than $30 on me to completely paying off all of it in one fell swoop. No joke!

    3) The impossible IS possible. There is always a way out, regardless! But often times we are too busy focusing on the problem that we don't see the solution. The money situation at the time was not exactly the most enjoyable experience, but I got through it, and it proved to me that as long as we don't give up and as long as we believe there is a solution, we CAN succeed!

When you think you just can't go on, that you cannot bear this, that you will not recover from this thing.....somehow, you do.

That the only way to fail is to stop.

That even if you start from less than nothing and are told you are going to die in 6 months and that there is no hope at all, that you CAN make it and that even 5 top specialist doctors can be wrong or that your will can be stronger than their diagnosis.

You CAN, against all odds, achieve goals you set for yourself.

You CAN survive creating millions of dollars only to have it all destroyed and lost and be at less than nothing again and YOU CAN, start again and create it all over again.

But from all this, the main life lesson I have learned is that when all is said and done, whether you have millions of dollars, live in a mansion, fly in private jets and socialize with celebrities or have nothing, live in a mobile home and barely get by, the people who truly love you will be there NO MATTER WHAT and it won't matter to them at all, one way or the other as long as you are happy.

Here's what life has taught me about myself:

    1) Discovering oneself is a continual process. The idea of "knowing thyself" and searching for answers and solutions within (instead of looking outwards) is extremely powerful - and the basis of most spiritual teachings...

By finding out more about myself, I find it easier to understand and relate to other people.

    2) Fear is nothing but a state of mind. Yes, that fear IS real, but when you realize that you have power over it, it becomes less scary.

    3) I'm fully responsible for my success. This helps me avoid blaming other people/circumstances and playing the victim. I'm in full control, "the master of my fate, the captain of my soul".

Anyway, the more you discover about yourself, the more fascinating it becomes...it's a life-long process, I guess...

For me the greatest life lesson I have learned is the meaning of true unconditional love. I did not know the meaning of unconditional love until I had children. With my two sons, I have learned how to give freely of myself, my resources and my love, without any expectation in return. I have learned to overlook their shortcomings and when confronted with a problem be non judgmental and supportive when necessary. Its funny but I never really thought about these characteristics within me until I became a mother.

Now, I find it much easier to share these same qualities with other people. I am much more compassionate for other people, so much more sensitive to other children. I have become a more humble, more caring person than I ever thought possible, and it's all because I learned to love other people unconditionally.

I can also add that it sure helps make life much easier, when you can give freely and not have any expectations in return. Giving freely from the heart, does have its own rewards, and actually just feels like the right thing to do.

Never be concerned with what "they" will think, what "they" will say or what "they" will do.

Who are "they" in the grand scheme of things anyway? Throughout history, "they" are never significant players to be noted, nor figures to learn from or admire.

As a matter of fact, "they" are the ones who ridiculed the true innovators and remarkable figures in history.

Yes, people pleasers get nowhere, they just spin in circles.

But over and beyond that, don't be afraid to step out on a limb and try things differently from the masses. Originality and creativity is what drives innovation. Some times your ideas work, sometimes they don't, but if you never try, they most certainly won't. (did I just rhyme, lol)

Anyway, what I was trying to say was, without attempting to blaze a new trail, you'll never be a trailblazer.

Just like you I resigned from a well paying job and I did not tell those close to me because I know they believe in employment and would not understand and though it is not so obvious to others whether I made the right decision, I know I will achieve what I set out to do and prove them all wrong.
