Just what do YOU have to be grateful for ?

Hey Guys,
Here's some of the things that I am grateful for and which I try to remember to give thanks for each day.
  • my parent - the nurturing they gave me, the values they taugh me, the love they showed me, the education, the food, clothing and shelter they gave me
  • my family and friends and the relationships we have and the love we share
  • my body - how well it performs even with the old injuries I have
  • my education - the fact that I can read and write and enjoy exploring new concepts and ideas
  • the country I live in - where I have a good lifestyle, freedom of speech and a capitalistic marketplace where I get a fair days pay for a fair days work
  • my home - which gives me shelter
  • food to nourish my body and the money to purchase the food
  • clothing to make me look civilised
  • the people that I have worked for and worked with over the years who taught me many things
  • the people that I have met that I didn't like because they also taught me things about myself
  • the ladies that I have loved & lost and shared years of my life with
Perhaps you would like to add some of the things for which you are grateful to the list coz I'm sure I have forgotten some. Oh and BTW there is no mention of the wife or kids as I am not married and don't have children.

Take good care of those that you love (including yourself)

    I'm most grateful for:

    * my children - they are the reason I strive to be the best person I can be every day.
    * my husband - he is the reason I am living the life/dream I have today.
    * my business partner and friend - I have learned so much in my journey through him.
    * my health - my goal is to keep up with my kids for as long as I can
    * my parents
    * did I say my children? :-)

It's always a good exercise to stop and think about what you are most grateful for in life. Some times it's easy to get too caught up in the things we don't have, so thanks for this.

This is one of my favorite topics. My top 4 are always the same.

    1. God and Christ because they are way cool.
    2. My awesome husband because he is way cool.
    3. My awesome kids because they are way cool.
    4. My intelligence because it is way cool and should not be judged by the fact that I use phrases like "way cool." lol

After that, I am really grateful for almost everything. I keep a gratitude journal quite often and list 25 things per day, sometimes I end up with 50. A lot of people laugh at me because some of my listings are kind of silly to them.

Things like a spoon and a jar of peanut butter. Or the fact that I have 3 M&Ms left. Or that my bird chirps like crazy when I crank up some Iron Maiden. But, if you aren't grateful for the small insignificant things, how can you really appreciate the big things. And life is too short not to be as amused by it as often as possible. Yes it can be serious but it can be very amusing too.

Also, by practicing daily gratitude it truly does make life more remarkable.

        Wow!

As I thought about it and began ticking off the many things in my mind, I had to ask myself, Wait, what are you not grateful for?

There isn't anything! Even the tough and trying times have ended up to be a blessing in disguise in the long run.

I'll admit I didn't like some experiences at the time, but I'm sure a butterfly doesn't enjoy all of the struggling to get out of the cocoon either, however, without the struggle, it would never be strong enough to able to take flight.

I am grateful that I have an "Attitude of Gratitude". Many people in today's society are so self absorbed and focused solely on what is wrong and then focus their attention on who to blame for these so called wrong doings. They operate with a "victim mentality" and give away their power. I am grateful to play the role of "Victor" and not "Victim" becuase it is me and no one else that determines my destiny. Stay strong and prosper!!

  • Hmmmm ?

    Grateful "to" and/or grateful "for"....

This is a great thread - thanks for starting it, RobbieT, and to all of you who 'stole' everything I was going to say - lol

I am grateful "to" GOD, Who makes all good things possible (and often times, 'real') for us... every day !

...grateful "for": life, and even death; good health, and even ill health (it's better than 'no health at all'); the good, the bad and the ugly - otherwise, how could we know and embrace the good, steer clear of the bad (except when it is to help people), and appreciate beauty (which is not always found in the 'wrapper' in which it presents itself - the 'physically' ugly person can have the most beautiful 'soul').

...grateful "for": my life; my faith in God through Jesus Christ - my/our Savior, by His precious body and blood given and shed for me/us, by the ower of His Holy Spirit; the love of my family, friends, parishioners, and fellow warriors/marketers; each of those individuals mentioned in the previous line; the good health I 'do' enjoy (especially after having had 2 recent, serious hospitalizations); my home and that we are still able to pay the mortgage - lol; so very, very much more... and the fact I didn't read my name in the obituaries today

...grateful "for": faith; hope; love; opportunities;....

These thoughts came in only 5 minutes !

The important thing about this 'exercise' is to "REMEMBER" it and re-count it "every day" - especially since most of those blessings come from 'outside' of us - from other people 'to' us - a good reminder for us to not be smug and self-centered, a.k.a.- the "self-made" individual.

We decide/determine what we will do with our lives, but the 'blessings', however small they may seem, come to us from God, other people, places, life experiences, and things.

Thanks for this thread and for the opportunity to reflect "with you", as this is something I do every day... with "Him"

    Your friend in Christ,

    Rev. Hal Humphries

My sincere thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts in the thread. Hal (the post above) touched on something which some of you may not be aware of yet.

Without the spaces between the notes there would be no music and you must experience the cold weather to appreciate the warm weather so sometimes the "bad" experience you have sensitises you for the good experience.

Here's a real life example. A middle aged lady tells the audience she is now grateful for being sexually molested as a child for that lead her to studying to be a teacher so that she could help children who have been traumatised by a similar incident. Her speciality is teaching troubled / unmanagable children because she can relate to what they experienced and the problems that it is causing them. She has also spoken with and forgiven her abuser. She has turned the "bad" negative experience into a positive and moved on. Smart lady!!

I must admit it took me some time to get my head around this concept but after giving it a lot of thought I finally "got it".

So sometimes a bad experience can have a good outcome.

    It's worth thinking about.

Take good care of those that you love.

    WATER!

Just spent the past week trying to get our water system working again and man it feels good to take a shower! LOL

You don't know how much you appreciate things until you don't have them for awhile. The only running water we had this week was when we had to go "running" down to our church to fill up five-gallon containers of water to run back home with! LOL
