Anyone else into working out, lifting weights, running on the treadmill, kick boxing etc?

I find it a great way to relieve stress and get fit. Sitting in front of a computer all day takes a toll on your body.

I like to got the gym but lately ive been training at home, ive got an awesome home gym in my basement compllete with 3 punching bags, weight rack and treadmill. Maybe post some pics of your setup, my phone is in the truck so ill do it later.

I try to run 4 times a week, 4-6 miles each time. Staying active is important. Be good to your body. It helps you stay focused and healthy.

So before IM grabbed me by the throat and dragged me in I was doing JKD and Jujitsu three times per week....but after going through run of broken bones and injuries, I now slap on a pair of running shoes every day and run a few K. Good way to clear the cobwebs and get back to focusing on the important stuff. If I don't, its very easy to sit down, start jamming and find the daylight has disappeared...

I have a treadmill but I prefer to run outdoors with my dog, either along the foreshore or through the forests. I think that way I get the physical benefits of running as well as the mental benefits of being in a beautiful place.

  • Hey there.

Yeah, I'm a big health freak.

I run 5 days a week, workout 3 days a week, and yoga two of them.

Soon, I'll be adding my rugby training and matches, and either wing chun or muay thai to that list.

And further down the line, swimming and surfing!

Yep, couldn't agree more, even to the point where I try to get away from the computer every hour and do some jogging on a mini trampoline for 10 minutes and some deep breathing exercises. When you get more oxygen into the blood you feel more awake and alive.

Here's a horror story for you all. I worked in a Cycling clothing shop and had a girl in her 30's (regular customer) come in who hadn't been in for a while. Remarked that I hadn't seen her for some time and she said that she had been working her butt off (8 to 10hr days) to finish a project at work, literally glued to her desk and hadn't cycled for weeks and guess what. She got a deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

The moral to the story is USE IT OR LOSE IT.

Take good care of those that you love (including yourself)

I'm a believer! However, I've let it slide recently so one of my themes for 2012 is to get fit! Kettlebells are a very efficient way of exercising for me.

That's funny you mention the gym...I am getting ready to walk out of the door right now to go!

I love getting a good workout in the morning before hitting the IM world all day....I bump the metal music, get that release, and also visualize what a great day, week, month, I will have with certain projects.

Working out goes hand in hand with me being productive, focused, and feeling good about sitting behind a computer most of the day....it has become an essential part of my routine.

Oh and Nic, I love kettlebells!! Did you happen to read the 4 Hour Dody by Tim Ferriss? Great chapter on working out with Kettlebells.

Absolutely, though my experience with kettle bells precedes that. About 10 years ago, a Russian by the name of Pavel Tsatsouline started writing about them at a site called Dragondoor. Really good strength training information was shared at that site, not just about Kettlebells. Got my deadliest max well over 460 lbs (210 Kgs) - not and for a skinny guy!

I work out 4-5 times a week, doing some cardio and yoga, but mainly lifting weights. It also helps that I have a health and fitness site as well (Wrestling In Jello), so since I need fresh content (on top of things that I've learned over the past 20 years), it's a great motivator to stay in shape! I guess you could say that I live my work LOL.

I've been doing long walks, but I used to work out in the gym at least 4 times a week and I'm starting back up. I'm going to be doing the Madcow 5x5 program which if done right is very intensive. I've done all sorts of different programs and this works the best for gaining strength and endurance. In reality I'm more focused right on the mind benefits of working out and this program works great for that also.Working out makes me a far more motivated, positive and clear thinking individual which is perfect for helping me tackle my IM goals!

I have my own gym set up in a spare room with multi-gym, exercise bike and punch bag.

I agree with you about stress relief... especially the punch bag, lol.

I think regular exercise is extremely important if you're spending all day sat in front of the computer with virtually NO physical activity.

I also like a few beers and a pizza to unwind now and then and those can really take their toll on your waste line if you don't hammer it out in the gym!

I've had a sinus infection (I think, I've had "bugs" like this before) the past few days that's limited my fitness regiment. I'm about a month in P90X -- love it. In a month or so when the whether becomes nicer regularly (if there is such a thing in central Ohio), I'm going to start running again. I would like to run the Columbus half marathon in October.

Yes, sitting in front of a computer screen for hours a day
can not be healthy for your body. So I like to take occasional
walks during the day. Especially if I encounter a problem in the
IM work I'm doing, then a break from work with a walk can clear
my mind and allow me to approach the impasse with new insight.
