Does online business really give you the freedom that you dream of ??

Hey Guys,

Still thinking deeply about this and thought should let this thought bounce off other members as well.

The other day i was discussing about a JV with a established WSO creator on Skype with whom i have become quite pally. He is one of the most genuine people i have come across who has his feet firmly bonded to the ground in spite of the remarkable success he has had. We then discussed about families in general. Later he asked me the purpose of entering into IM to which i replied about freedom that one gets by being a online entrepreneur. He smiled. I knew what he was hinting at.
I have been on leave from my day job for about a week to work on my upcoming WSO. For the entire last week i have been online working for this project. I i look at the time sheet i can see i have put in more efforts and time into the project than my regular day job. I know i will enjoy the fruits of this in near future but has internet marketing given me the freedom that i look forward to?. Is it just me or a passing phase. I feel sorry for unable to give time to my family as i need to wrap up the back end work of the WSO before i go back to my day job.

Warriors..Need some serious advise on this. Experienced ones please share your experiences.

Regards,
Andy.

For me, my way of working and living is now the norm though I do always stop once in a while to appreciate what I have - especially in comparison to other people and I am grateful for it.

I think it depends on what your idea of freedom is. You will have financial freedom if you succeed. You will have the freedom that means you don't have to travel to work in heavy traffic or put up with a cranky boss or other workplace tensions. You can stop and take a break when you want even if its not time for it. If your partner is at home you can go and give them a hug when you feel like it. If you get excitted about your sales you can give a big woo-hoo and stand on your hands and no one will look at you strangely or give you the sack. So what is your idea of freedom?

      Hi Andy,

I think Beverley has summed it up very well.

As with all things the effort required to get the ball rolling is considerable but as you get better at it and as you get feedback then you can tailor the time and effort you put in to achieve what you are happy to receive.

Take good care of those that you love.

I think if done right, then it can give me the freedom that I dream of. I have not been able to do it right yet. But one day, eventually, I might be able to make things work how I want them to go.

I do SEO work for alot of clients, Life insurance companies, technogym distributors matrix fitness etc. motor home insurance companies to wedding photographers to flight compare sites. It takes a TON of my time and I am working 16 hour days. But... I love it! I love what I do and I love ranking websites.

Being at home atleast I am with my daughter and wife all day instead of away from them 8 hours a day.

I am happy cus I love my work and I am happy that I am around my family all day it can't get much better. + it enables me to live in Thailand, the only other option would be a teacher... no thanks.

I bummed my way into this business so I worked my tail off. Now I'm at the point where I work whenever I want and only work when I want. I think that's the goal.

Don't get me wrong, I work hard but it's completely up to me when and how hard I work.

For example, in the winter I work very hard. In the summer, I literally work under 10 hours per week...probably closer to 5. But the reason I can do that is because I worked my butt off to create a grow a business that can operate that way.

So sure you need to work hard to get things going but things become better when the light at the end of the tunnel and the goal and vision is something you really want.

    The internet lifestyle is great!

Having the skills to 'turn it up' when you need to and chill out when you can ensures that you get the best of both works.
A lot of time people work continuously because there is no end point and there will always be something to fill the time so people work on and on.
However its like a car, you have to fuel it up at some point, but if you ran that car continuously and only fuelled up when it completely ran out of gas, that car is going to the scrap heap pretty soon!
But if you looked after the car, fuelled up regularly and respected the engine, you can have that car for years.

It takes a while and a lot of studying and practice to begin, and you need to work hard. But the truth is that when you see results, it a lot of fun. Personally, I don't consider it work most of the time, because of how much fun it is. And if you are successful and have financial freedom, you can do whatever you want.

An online business CAN give you freedom. But like so many others have said, it all depends on what your idea of freedom is. Is it freedom from working for someone else, where you own your business and call the shots, even if you're working 12+ hours a day? Or is freedom for you passive income that you earn while you sleep, so you can be away from the computer most of the day, doing non-work-related things? An online business can give you either thing. It all depends on what you want, what you put into action, and how dedicated you are to making it happen for yourself.

Personally, I can sit at home and work for 16 hours straight without thinking twice about it.

On one hand, it was awesome to quit my day job, but I missed the social interaction. That is why I took a part time job even though i don't need it. It gave me time to think about other things. It provided me with a social life outside of work work work and goof goof goof. Plus it gave me a legitimate reason to put pants on before noon.

Definitely, the more work you put in, the more success you'll realize, but you don't need to isolate yourself from the world to achieve your dreams.

      Great discussion guys.

I've been full time working online since 2004.

      It does take some time to get used to the life of working at home which can be quite a shock after having a regular job. You can feel lonely etc to begin with. A few things that have helped me are;

Important from day 1 to keep some passion outside of work. eg for me I played guitar in a band till 2 years ago. Now I fly R/C planes and helis for time out from work when not with family. We all need to be able to get away from work into some other head space regularly.

You need a good outsourcing team - they can take a lot of the drudgery out of the work which allows you more time to be creative and spend time on the BIG picture things or to just chill more. Most of our team are all full timers now so don't need to waste all that time looking for new staff all the time for each project and deal with workers who don't get the work done or take forever to finish a simple project. We now have how staff who recruit and train all our new staff with only minor input required from us. It takes time to set that up but now if we need a new staff member, or someone leaves, there's always a staff member trained to find a new staff member and all the training has already been developed (ebooks and videos) so it's not too painful.

If we can do it, anyone can do it.

Make some internet buddies or get a business partner with complimentary skills! I have my brother as business partner who is the geek of the business and I manage the marketing. We live 500 odd miles part so we live on Skype but it works out well. I have soem friends I can talk shop with now and then...

Have an office in the corner of the house. When I started out, I had an office downstairs near the lounge near the front door. I felt like I was always at work, even when sitting in the lounge because the office was always right there. Now I have my office upstairs in the corner so unless I'm in the office, I don' t see it so don't feel I'm at work all the time anymore.

The only thing I haven't worked out though! How to explain to non internet marketers what you job is. They just don't seem to get it.

I wouldn't change it for the world though. Iv'e been lucky to be at home to see my daughter growing up and have a lot of time with my wife and friends.

I reckon it depends on who defines freedom. I found at one time I had none, Now I pretty much do what I want, their are exceptions, but outsourcing is the way I got more free time to do what I do best. The people I outsource to do what they do best.

I have written a few recent blog posts about this exact topic (both on my own website and in my WF blog).

My experience is that I spend more time on my Internet Business than I did when I was working at a J.O.B. outside of the home . . . but that's because I LIKE doing this! It's not work to me.

In my blog posts, I note that many marketers, especially in the beginning, must devote a great deal of time to their online business. Over time, it starts to balance out.

Here is what I personally like best about working from home: Time FLEXIBILITY!

Rather than time "freedom" that we all talk about, and which is a bit of a myth for many Internet Marketers, I enjoy time flexibility where I work if and when I want to and I can do family things or deal with emergencies or whatever as they come up (not when a BOSS is "kind enough" to let me go home a few minutes early!) lol

Perhaps the best way to look at the situation is that you will sacrifice your time now to create a sustainable business for you and your family. Once you have made it you can leverage your time by outsourcing most of the work and spend more time with your family.

    Hi.

I might venture to say, that a human individual is never truly free, nor simultaneously, never truly contained within an enclosure of confinement. Free is a manufactured word for individuals of the humankind, to assign to attributes of tangible sonic, and virtual principle forms of communication. This is done to encourage a familiar knowledge of a coordinate position of presence within what we term, 'reality'.

This particular prescription of 'reality', is designed in consequence of a human character attribute we know as, 'survival'. The least amount of resistance towards the attainment of this dynamic attribute, is a preferred state of condition. Both the intelligent and instinctual consciousness of an individual embraces this condition at varying degrees of attention.

What might serve us better in terms of understanding, is the recognition that their is a more significant existence of actuality, behind the cosmetic vales of 'reality', which have nothing to do with any incarnation of a manufactured word.

Free or 'freedom', the manufactured word, exist to enable the removal of the hybrid emotional psychic sensitivity, that we understand to be, and know as, 'Fear'.

'Fear' of an unknown, generally means that there is more of a chance for less exposure to the supportive features of maintenance towards a survival; thereby more of a chance for less survival.; Get it?

In our present condition of humanness, there is a behavior of associative reference, that pertains to various states of emotion, and prescriptions of balance or counter-balancing thought trend and their relative associated behaviors.

But enough of the fluff. Let's go deep to the core essence of the circumstantial word' free'.

Freedom is a singular point of radiance that expresses from within the observable conscious acknowledgement of the particle of mind that yopu as an individual contain.

There's more to this story of being 'free', even in terms of an individuals desire to experience a conjured reality within a tangible environment of everyday living. Something to think about...

Does online business really give you the freedom that you dream of?

    NO!

Freedom comes from a 'clear perspective perception', that agrees with a desired degree of confidence, that is formed or forming in places or environment that are away from an unknown. As such, freedom is a matter of perspective, which can manifest in numerous material explanations. In simpler terms,an individual attains a freedom if they think, feel, and believe they have. Go figure!...

And so; The singular point of consciousnesses within an individuals particle of mind, colors a manufactured word symbol that is used for purposes of communication, with imaginations of the residual aspects of an emotionally charged concept of 'behavioral desire', with a tangible solid of environment.

    Something to ponder!

YES! I believe an online business CAN give you the freedom you need, provided (as mentioned above) that there are some parameters to define what this freedom is

I worked a full time job since 2004, and my first job was as a content developer/editor for an online biz company, companies that make money off their websites.

Was exposed to many forms of online marketing and that got me started on my wild chase for the internet lifestyle freedom (rich and young with plenty of time)

I've tried many times, setting up something and try to make money out of it, only to eventually give up and dedicated my time to my actual job to perform better at it.

After 7-8 years of working a full time job and learnings from all the failures in the wild chase, here's what I realize:

The 9-5 game won't change much, it's a rat race, and even if you do climb all the way to the top, you're still gonna be bounded by 9-5 timing, a boss to report to, deliverables to deliver although you don't like any of it, bla bla bla (at least it's true for those in the advertising/digital agency field)

The second thing I realize is that no matter what online biz you start, if you're only in it for the money, it's 99% not enough to create that success to create the freedom you're looking for. GENUINE PASSION is what you need.

To succeed in an online business, you need skills, experience, the right contacts/partners and all, but most importantly, you need genuine passion about it to keep the flame burning, to keep you motivated, to make the work fun so it's no longer work work per se

After yet another long self-discovery phase and stumbling blocks in my 9-5 game, I'm happy to learn what it really takes to build an online business, and I'm happy to set new directions for myself moving forward in my new online business venture, one that I have genuine passion about and one that I can confidently say to myself that I'll be doing this for the next 5/10 years

So to answer your question, yes, an online business can give you many levels of freedom, passive income with a 24/7 business, global audience meaning global revenue opportunities, and definitely much less work compared to a 9-5 (at least true when you hit that success)

Few things to keep in mind though:
    - what's the idea?
    - is there a market for it?
    - genuine passion for it?
    - how much time and effort can you spend on it
----- definitely much more than a 9-5 in the early years
----- before it hits success, you still got a day job to keep paying the bills
    - how much do you need to make before you can turn full time into the business
    - what milestones can you realistically set for yourself
----- pls don't believe any hype about automation, make xxx amount in 3 days with no work or any of those BS, I personally have tried many of them and either it's truly BS, or if requires too much time (given there is no genuine passion for it to begin with)

hope the above helps, and good luck to us all in achieving that internet lifestyle we want!

Well ,it cannot be more inprisoning that what I am doing right now.I work 16-17 hours a day in a small space with no real conversation with any human people other than complaints from clientel. Thrn my bosses keep giving me more work to do because I been around the longest. And worse one of bosses tries to blame me for everything and when it comes out I had nothing to with it, I just get an"oh well" then she spends the next weeks trying to find some to chew me out about.(not my imagination, my coworkers make jokes about how I am her favorite target and punching bag). my 2nd job is not much better.I work hard, the bosses get the credit something goes wrong they are ready to pounce. If it wasn't for having a responsibilty to my 9 year old daughter i would away from both these jobs tomorrow. So for me yes,it would me ythr freedom I desire, even if means Iwas woeing 10 hours aday, I could see my daughter more ,my dogs more,(Ifeel like Iam neglecting them sometimes) and i would be working for me, not getting bonuses fro my bosses, making the owners rich.I would be working for myself and my family. It would sooo worth it.

Building an internet marketing business is just like building any other business. In the growth phase when you are starting to build products, websites, writing content and everything else that is needed you definitely need a full day's work to make any significant progress - what makes that difficult is that most people hold a day job and do their work in the evenings and during vacation. Of course that requires us to put in tons of work in as little time as possible.

But think about it - once you go into the harvesting phase you do not have that full time job "stealing" your time anymore and you can constantly work on your IM business.

When I first started I worked non-stop. Now that I do this full time I will have weeks where I work full time 16-18 hours per day because I want to finish something. Then on the other hand there are many weeks where I exercise in the morning, go out for breakfast and then perhaps even the pool for a bit before I put in a few hours of work.

It most certainly gets easier once the foundation is built.
