The one question to ask...

"I must be mad staying here"; that was a common statement I would hear during my days as an office monkey. Of course the most obvious response from me would be to question their insanity; "So why do you do it then?" Their response is equally mind numbing;

"Because it pays the bills doesn't it"

Is that it? You live your life for 40 hours a week so you can pay all your bills each month? It was at moments like these I reaffirmed my thought pattern of getting the f#ck out of that environment quickly.

Whenever you ask 'why', unless you're asking a moody teenager, you are going to get a story about the reason they are doing what you are asking them about. When you do this you are going to draw upon their beliefs and values about what is important to them.

What is important to them?

From a coaching point it is good for me to find out what is important for the business owner in what they have created and why they are in business. Whilst it is rarely the case that people start a business on a whim, they are not always consciously clear about what their 'why' is.

Why are you in business?

This is a fundamental question that can get you out of a hole after a week of no sales or you feel like your message is not being heard. It is important you are aware of what your 'why' is because it will remind you of what that desire was for you when you initially decided to start a business. If it is strong enough it will drag you up from the black hole long enough to keep you moving forward instead of giving up.

If I was to ask what is my 'why' I would say:

"Because I want to help a new generation of business owners use their mind more efficiently"

This motivates me to learn when im tired

This motivates me to help business owners even if they are not clients

This motivates me to continuing think about ideas how to help them more.

When you are clear about your why it is like your fuel to keep moving. You don't fuel up a car whilst its moving, you fuel up when it's stationary then it can keep moving. Asking your why is a reflection question when you have stopped to think about it. But by asking that question, it keeps you moving towards your outcomes.

We have to strive higher than 'because it pays the bills'. If we want to be part of this current generation of business owners who make a difference and profit ethically it is important we become clear about our 'why' and use it like petrol in your car; to drive you forward without bailing out and settling.

Finding your 'Why'
  1. • Imagine you have found yourself on stage at Britains(or Americas) got talent and you are asked the question "Why are you in business?"
  2. • Now you have to think about an answer that is going to get them on their feet cheering your name and shedding tears of joy from what they have just heard, rather than boo and shout 'you suck'
  3. • What would your answer be?
  4. • When you have said it, ask yourself 'if I was in the crowd and I heard that how would I respond?'.
  5. • Continue until it you get an answer that makes you want to cheer your own name!

Perfectly true. In fact, bringing out your real reason/s on why you are doing something (whether starting a business or something else) will give your motivation a turbo-boost.

This is provided you have strong enough reasons to do what you're doing. You may also discover that there are no strong reasons for you to continue with a certain activity. That's fine too. Because you can then move on to other things that DO matter to you.

    Thanks!
