The Real Secret To Success

I've been doing a lot of thinking about success and the mind lately, and I've come to the conclusion that in my humble opinion, success is 98% mental, and 2% skill.

Almost every single successful person in life has believed that they will be successful.

A little story that really drives home my feeling about this is the story of Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile back in the 1950's.

Did you know that after he managed that "impossible" feat, 37 other people also did it within 2 years!
Why? Well because they all knew it could be done because Bannister had done it.
Before that, no one thought it was possible to run that fast. Mentally, people thought it was impossible. As a result, not a single human had run a mile in under 4 minutes before the 1950's.
Then suddenly when people saw it was possible after Bannister did it, 37 more athletes did it within the next 2 years!
What had changed? They were the same athletes, with the same training. They just had a different mindset.

That is the power of the human mind, and why in my opinion success is 98% mental.

Just wanted to share my thoughts.

The skill is a result of how much work you put in (derived from the mental aspect).

I agree with the general premise which is that one's mentality/mindset has a significant impact on one's success. It doesn't really matter if you have special skills or abilities -- if you aren't determined to put in the necessary effort, you won't get anywhere.

The percentages may be a matter of opinion and personal experience, but I definitely agree that success and achievement is largely a mental game. We've got to dream it first, then mentally motivate ourselves to do something about it, and then continue to stimulate our emotions to keep us doing things until the goal is achieved.

I'm surprised more people don't post here in Mind Warriors because like you said the mental aspect of “success” is crucial. By “networking” with each other and discussing the inner game of success I think we have a massive advantage over people who aren't aware of how important it is. Great post, by the way. : )

There is one major component you didn't mention: taking action! You can have the mindset and the skills, but if your never do anything with it, you will NEVER achieve success.

Mental attitude is definitely a MASSIVE part of this. You have to believe something can be done, but you also have to try out your theory in a real world setting and take that is far as you can go.

Then you have to learn from your mistakes, adjust your direction and theory and then test it out.

Great post... it only needed a verb!

Yes, i agree. I'm finding both elusive:p and both are essential--belief in yourself and then action.

Good point monkeytrousers. Action is equally important in achieving success.

However, similarly, if all you do is take action (without a "Success Mindset") you'll end up being unhappy no matter how much action you take.

Just ask all those people who end up going bankrupt and unhappy after winning the “Lotto.”

I totally agree! Even if you have the power of the mind and skills but doesn't have an action then you can't achieve success. Take also an action about it.

I have noticed a common theme amongst successful people. They don't fear failure. In fact they seem to rise out of the ashes of failure. Donald Trump is a classic example of this. Success - Bankruptcy - Success

What about talent? Is that a part of mental (I don't think).

Trump is a little iffy because his dad died worth ~$400M; although the elder Trump probably wasn't that loaded when Donald was younger, Donald has a lot of help.

I personally think that often talent is over-rated and confused with hardwork.

Malcolm Gladwell goes into great detail in his interesting book The Outliers, in which he claims that any skill can be mastered in 10,000 hours.

For example, let's take a 7 year old "prodigy" that can play the piano like a master.

Naturally people would assume they were talented, but in reality you would probably find that the child had been playing the piano since it was 2 years old for 8 hours a day.
If that was the case, that would give the child 14,000 + hours of piano playing already, which would basically be sheer hard work, not talent.

Another good example is Tiger Woods. He also started playing golf when he was only 18 months old and by the time he was 5 was beating most adults.
Again though, it was hard work and focus more than talent.

      Interesting topic though

        Definitely interesting.

Also interesting, is the distinction is what you said as it pertains to talent vs. skill. No doubt world class pianists and golfers require great talent, as well as prodigious dedication. I can practice basketball forever, but I'm never going to go far into the ranks (okay, bad example for a 5'9" person -- but you get the point).

Much of IM is a skill. Those you have tremendous talent in a niche of IM can excel; likewise, those with a huge visual and management skills can become legendary (ostensibly said persons need satisfactory execution and ideas).

But yeah, dedication is important, too.

I think the secret is just taking action. If you aren't fully skilled with 10,000 hours of experience in a certain field or topic, if you take action towards your goal it'll only get your closer. Learning from experiences is necessary and this will only happen when you take action. Yes, you may stumble a bit but eventually you will get the hang of it.

We just let our minds get the best of us and create so many mental obstacles that it stops us from taking action and realizing success.

There is no single secret. It's all about the individual. I think it starts with your own definition of success. Some people think that someone who drives a certain kind of car or has a specific kind of job is a success. I think it's about doing something well, enjoying it, and earning a living that gives you a quality of life that makes you happy.

I think the secret to success is to get in uncomfortable situations that force you to work harder, get up earlier, do the things we have been putting off, for example one time I was in the situation where I had something like 6 months course work to do in 1 month or would fail my course but I got it done because the thought of failing my course was so bad it made me really uncomfortable which forced me to do whatever it took to get the work done.

In the situation with the 4 minute mile, once it had been beaten then standards had been raised which put pressure on the other athletes to up there game.

I agree. The more you believe in yourself, the more you are apt to recognize opportunities when they come. Having a huge amount of skill without the right state of mind will equal failure more often than not. More people have become successful with a positive mind state than with skill. A good test of that fact is looking at how many extremely capable and intelligent/genius people are either unemployed, broke/barely surviving or working a "crappy" job.

    Thoughts are things!

Mental and skill must go hand in hand. If you have the intelligence but don't have the skill, you couldn't put into realization the image of your creativity. The same with skill. If you have the skill but don't have the intelligence, you couldn't work well to maximize your skill.

With the right mental and attitude, the right skills will usually comes naturally.. As long as you're eagle to make it happen (success, marriage etc), you'll certainly find a way to make it happen..

I really agree to this thread especially when he mentioned that mental, having the right attitude is much more important than the skill itself (not so much about the percentage though)

This observation has come from coaching and mentoring people to financial success over the past 10 years.

Once you TRULY decide in your mind that you are going to acheive something and it burns a hole in your brain 24/7 all the other aspect like taking action, learning new skills, overcoming obstacles and challenges ALL fall into place.

Focus on creating a burning, unwavering reason "WHY" you want what you are going after the success will follow.

It has worked every time I have seen this occur.

    Stay Strong & Prosper

The best use of ones mind (focus, beliefs, attitude) is to Focus it on what one has to DO to succeed. I have a little formula for that: F.A.R., which stands for:

    Focus + Action = Results/Reality

All of ones mental focus should be directed to what one has to DO to achieve results.
This is the most reliable success formula I have ever come across; it works!
