what a child can teach you about business

If you ever watch a child you will notice something about them that is key to their development as they acclimatise themselves to the world around them. They move around bright eyed and look to make sense of what sparks their sensory awareness.

As days turn into weeks, it is this wide-eyed curiosity that contributes to the child's learning and shapes how they view the world. Because their frontal lobe is still vastly underdeveloped they are not able to analyse and rationalise what they see. As a result they just do and take in what stimuli they have been attracted to.

When in business the ability to learn about your industry, be clear about your customers problems as a way to attempt to solve them and listen to their complaints are all part of learning about how to move your business forward.

Can you imagine a business surviving where you:
a. Knew nothing about the industry
b. Didn't understand your customers problems
c. Disregarded complaints as collateral damages in your pursuit of empire building.

By adopting a childlike curiosity about your market and how you optimise your performance as a business owner you are able to reach new levels of refining your approach. Curiosity breeds exploration and it is through exploration that deep learning can take place.

The problem can come when we begin to engage the frontal part of our brain and begin to make assumptions about our market and infer why things are the way they are. We start to base judgements on low information, instead of operating our curiosity in a way where we can function from a non-judgement perspective and so not allow our cognitive bias to get in the way of new insights.

With social media these days it is easier to discover what is going on in your market and find out what is really going on in the mind of your customers. With Twitter you can discover in real time what your audience is talking about and with Facebook you can create a community and engage with your customers, asking questions that can form the basis of where you take your business.

Just like a child learns the ways of the world by curiously crawling through life, you can curiously explore how you and your business can best serve your market.

Maybe you'll discover just how you can really make a contribution to their lives.

We should also be like a child, dare to dream. When we are growing up, we have lost the power to dream.

  • Kids are so full of excitement and curiosity. For them, the world is full of possibilities and almost anything is doable.

And they’re so tenacious! Especially when they’re hustling money to by themselves candy and chips.
