The Sensation of Working

I just stumbled across an interesting quote and wanted to share it with my fellow warriors:

I no longer work for anything but the sensation I have while working.
~ Albert Giacometti

I interpret this "sensation" that he speaks of as the feeling of elation and drive when one attempts to overcome obstacles and manages to really succeed in his/her endeavors -- whatever those might be. This is the type of feeling that encourages people to continue learning, improving and reaching their goals.

If you ask me, this is exactly the type of mindset that we should all want. We shouldn't be constantly fighting against ourselves to achieve something -- we should want it enough to motivate us through our failures and shortcomings.

Work is a series of bumps and little success that lead to the peak of success... Im sure he's referring to those little success and the bumps that make it all worthwhile...

Given the number of 'failures' in the world today, it looks like most people need a total shift of mindset.

there is a shift going on.. a lot of people who where successful in the system of only a few years ago ..got pushed out of place by events beyond their control..

and after the "joy" of long term unemployment after a working hard and going crazy ...the though of 30 more years of working for others and the "joy" of retiring..with a broken body .."hehe "

most of the people in the us will be smacked around by the fact the old plan does not work anymore ..and that they will probably be working the rest of their lives ..

I just want to do work that makes me feel alive ...

Here's a bit of background on Giacommetti from Wiki

Alberto Giacometti (10 October 1901, Borgonovo, Stampa - 11 January 1966, Chur) was a Swiss sculptor, painter, draughtsman, and printmaker.

Alberto was the eldest of four children and was interested in art from the beginning of his life.

In light of the above, (he lived through the depression and the 1st & 2nd World Wars) maybe at the time he said it he was:-
    • grateful that he had work that produced an income.
    • living his dream and his job was his passion.

It sounds like he was content.

Take good care of those that you love.

    A good mindset to have.

Most people chase the money. Which sees them in corporate drone jobs. None (or very few) want to be there.

Had they worked for the sake of actually working I'm sure they would be doing something different (or the nature of those jobs would be altered).

    I like this;

If you love your work, if you enjoy it, you're already a success.

    JACK CANFIELD, The Success Principles

Personally, I think the vast majority of people in this world don't love their work and have decided to settle for second best.

Most of us have a choice though and it takes real courage to make the tough choices and decide "not to settle for second best"!

I actuallly read the word "sensation" here more broadly and, dare I say it, more 'spiritually' and I think he chose the word deliberately to be that broad.

I interpret it to mean he works only for being-in-the-moment, for all the experiences that working provides, the sensation of expansion, of movement. Sometimes that is elation, or feelings of success, but not always. I interpret it to mean that he is not working for the outcome, for the end result, or the paycheck. And most spiritual teachers basically teach this same concept as the way to get all that you want in the end.
