I was wondering if IM can be considered to be a career. I'm still unable to decide and plan about my career. I was just thinking about internet marketing to make my career but I don't know if it has that much potential or not.

Professional Sales is a career, so why not Internet Marketing? It's all about marketing and selling.

There is as much potential in Internet Marketing as in any other kind of business. It is not a question of the potential of the business. It is a question of the potential of the individual to learn the business and practice it enough to become a successful professional.

I believe IM is one of the greatest unrecognised careers of the modern era. Did you know that MLM (as a business model) was not recognised for decades? now the business model is being taught in many of the worlds top universities. It is only a matter of time before Internet Marketing will follow suit.

I think that IM is a career - it's a full time job and there are many areas that you can expand into. I don't see why it wouldn't be called a career.

I think that many more jobs in the future will be more difficult to define as an actual "career" because people will be doing more work online and perhaps having income from multiple sources.

I would definitely say that IM is a career though.

Why wouldn't it? Just like creating any business' banner or salesletter is a career, doing the selling is indeed a career.

I agree with GT -- IM can certainly be a career if you make it into one

Ofcourse IM is a career, but I also believe that it is much much more than that.

    It's a lifestyle.

Internet marketing, like sales, has the potential to make you a lot of money. So it can be a job, or more precisely, a business.

Whether your internet marketing business is a career or just a job is based on two things: money and self worth. If you can't make ends meet at it, it's not a career. If you don't derive self worth from it, it's not a career.

If you make money consistently at internet marketing, you have a business. If you make a lot of money consistently at internet marketing, you have a successful business. If you make a lot of money consistently at internet marketing and you derive self worth from it, it's a career.

Of course, you just can't apply for it; you must work toward it.

IM can be a very promising career but one is required to be patient and focused as you have spend a lot of effort, time and even money before the results start to trickle in.

    I say as others have...

    Yes, IM is a career...

Yes, it is so much more...

Granted, I am just getting started in my career, but I am planning for it and working at as anyone would looking for advancement and professional develop.

To me, it is a career, but not a job: I can actually diversify, and control, my career, but not do with a job.

  • To put in it's simplest form, IM is just a means to market something. It's a method (or set of methods) to promote, market or sell to a particular audience.

It can be either seen as a noun or a verb. I like to often compare IM to martial arts.
There are so many techniques and moves that you can practice, refine and master which take a great level of discipline.

And to answer your question - yes it is a career. There's no shame in handing out a business card with your name on it and saying 'Internet Marketer' or 'Internet Marketing Specialist', etc. etc.
