Dropping out of college!

I'm dropping out of college to focus on IM and/or MLM.

So far I've stayed because I want to make my parents happy. I want them to feel successful because they've given me an education. But truly, I dont' want to and not gonna work as a nurse (I'm in nursing school right now).

I'm supposed to be graduating nursing school this December and right now I'm failing. There's too much stress and it's very fast paced. The reading is terrible and so are the exams. I've been observing how nurses work in clinical and it's very stressful and demanding. I've decided it's just not for me. I also don't want to work in any jobs. i want to have my own business.

The problem is letting my parents know that I don't want to do nursing anymore. I still live with them and depend on them for money. But right now I'm in a coaching program for internet marketing, and if I focus all my energy and time on that, I'm sure that in 4-6 months I will have the income to be able to live on my own. On a side note, I can easily provide for my own allowance if I focus on IM and not have to ask them for money.

So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    kardesh10,

stay in school, then AFTER you have your degree, you can decide not to go into the field but at least you have a degree. a lot of people never enter their field of study but having a degree will give you an edge, if you have to look for job, if your IM career does not take off as fast as you may want it to.

it is a lot harder to go back to school to complete a degree once you leave your parents nest. IM is not as easy as everyone may think and the vast majority of people will not make money doing it, even if places like WF are full of people claiming to be making money, so stay in school and complete your degree.

trust me on this, you NEED to stay in school and then at least your parents did not waste their energy and efforts to provide you the opportunity. also, at least try to talk to them and let them know how you feel right now, they may be able to help you with your current situation but you will not know unless you ask in most cases.

Making money is more important than going to college you don't like for a job you don't wanna do.
in my case this is my 9th years at college it's not effecting me at all because here in Egypt the college fees doesn't cost over a 200$ per year ( and even it's a little money the education you get isn't worth it!!!
So, if you don't want to be a nurse and you don't like or want to go further in your college you are wasting everyday you go to that thing
I wish all the best to you

I can understand your choice not to continue with your nursing education. You have given it a shot and have found that it is not for you. In my opinion, that is the purpose of getting experience: to find out what you like and don't like; to find out what you are good at and what you may not be good at.

However ... I caution you NOT to make the decision to quit nursing school too quickly. It might just be influenced by the "fun" you are having in Internet Marketing as opposed to the work and drudge that school requires of you.

That is NOT a good basis on which to make a life-changing decision.

I think that you will find that the requirements of business education can be as demanding, unexciting and stressful as nursing education. You might simply be switching one for the other.

My recommendation is to consider staying in nursing school and toughing it out until graduation. If you do that, you will prove to yourself that you have the ability to stick with something, stay focused and finish it to completion, no matter how demanding it is.

And THAT is a skill worth learning. You can then switch your focus to IM and apply the same qualities of focus, commitment and dedication.

First of question why did you get into nursing school in the first place, second how many years have you been there, third don't quit until you make full time income from IM.
IM like any other business has start up costs do you have a plan to come up with that money?
Do you have a plan for after you graduate if you graduate?

Iwill tell you this, many people do not understand IM so explaining this to them sounds crazy but to you and me it is perfectlysound so be careful who you talk to about your future plans.

Those that make money say, "Look at me, I did it you can too." They are joined by a bunch of wabbabes with the same message...which is misleading or false from them. IM is not an easy business to climb to the top. I recommend continue your education...but don't forget your dream. If you have the energy, do both! Actually, you will have a better chance if you have to steal your hours from a busy day to do your IM work!

Hidden in the Warrior forum are thousands of people who may read the material, who want to do the work, but have not done/ cannot do...it.

The point is, it seems easy and straightforward to get started. But, can you guarantee that you will be successful? When you give up future income, you are shutting doors. Better a few years of unused school, than no degree and no income.

Oh Boy. Are YOU in for a shock.

The real world is stressful fast-paced. Find out how fast you get into trouble and how stressful it is when you can't pay your bills.

IM is not a magic wand you can wave to get what you want. There are NO easy ways out. Most of the bills of goods being sold are hogwash.

Many people don't use their postsecondary education in their work life. I don't...at least, not that often. But it's great to have in the back pocket.

Ask yourself why you're failing out. If it truly is because you don't want to be a nurse, then pick a different program to transfer to. But if you do an honest self-assessment, and it comes back that you're simply not working hard enough...how do you think you're going to do without the safety net in the real world?

I've been there--when I was 17, I graduated from high school and immediately went to university. I had no focus, had a terrible time, did poorly, and worked as a waiter. Ended up failing out and going to work full time. Did that for a year. Refocused, came back, did two more programs and completed a 4-year degree, 2-year technical diploma and a 1-year specialty certificate with honors...all within the next 3 years. The 3 terms I'd done previously actually came back to help me as block credit transfers. So nothing was wasted.

But what really made the difference was this: the second time around, I was a little bit older, a little bit wiser...I meant it more...and I was ready to work.

DO NOT QUIT nursing school just yet. Just like you said, that college diploma is within your reach. Do not drop out of school now just because the program you're in is "very stressful and demanding." You've managed to stay in Nursing school for years, it is foolish to quit when you are almost THERE.

Your parents may have "forced" you into taking the program, but the fact remains, you were able to survive it. Not everyone can do that. I should know, my cousin had the same predicament. His parents enrolled him in a Nursing program even if he wanted to take up Engineering. However grudgingly, he finished the course, took the bar exams, and passed. He is not working as a nurse now but in an industry where he is faring very well. He plans to practice his nursing degree outside the country in a couple of years, but right now, he has the freedom to do what he wanted.

My point is: finish nursing school first and then pursue IM. At least if the latter doesn't work out, you always have something you can fall back on.

I dropped out of college after spring 2011 semester. I'll be going back in the fall, but I will not be among the masses graduating just to be funneled into a desk jockey position at a major corporation. I'm going to be running my internet businesses while taking classes. In my eyes, a degree is vastly overrated as most of my mentors/role models don't have degrees.

    Just my two cents.

Maybe instead of dropping out, switch majors. Keep working on being successful online while still pursuing your degree. It is not bad to have a plan B, or C, or D or Z.

Sorry guys. My decision is to drop out of nursing school. I won't be able to do IM and nursing school at the same time. Nursing school is just way too demanding and stressful. And I don't like working in jobs

Like I said I'm in a coaching/training program right now and I KNOW I'll be making a nurse's monthly paycheck or more by the time I graduate (this December). I'll just be wasting time in school, time I could've spent educating myself about IM and building my site.

I know I can make it happen. I know it's not gonna be easy but it's gonna be less hard because of the coaching program.

Firstly regarding the bolded quote, you certainly can be in school and learn IM on the side. I co-run my own travel insurance company, working 10 - 12 hour days and still have time to learn on the side. Why? Because I genuinely enjoy it and find time to partake in my hobby.

Regarding the second sentence. Being in schoool is a doddle, sorry. When you're not living with your parents and you have bills, rent (everything) to pay for, being self employed is unsecure (due to constant changes in technology, algorithms etc) and very demanding - Especially in IM.

How about getting a job within a digital marketing agency? That's how I started out (give or take).

You can go in as a junior, get trained up in PPC or SEO by professionls within the industry and get paid for it. within a year or so you will have gained enough knowledge (and money) to launch some small campaigns.

When you start seeing coninuous ROI, reinvest and scale up your campaigns.

        It's the best solution. :

        • You are getting a stable salary
        • You are getting taught by IM Pros
        • You are in the industry which you enjoy
Starting our as a digital marketing junior within an agency has opened so many doors for me I couldn't begin to explain.

        All the best.

How many of you telling him not to drop out are actually making a living from the internet?

If he doesn't want to become a nurse, why waste time pursuing a degree? If he put the same time and effort into his business as he does in college then the margin for failure will be severely reduced.

Just saying people, put your money where your mouth is, the most successful people on the internet do not have degrees, and they WENT to college.

However, if you don't want to put in 110%, then you're wasting your time and maybe you should join the labor force.

      ^This.

To kardesh10: it seems like you're really determined to get into IM and out of your degree -- that's your decision and that's fine. I think that the best way to obtain your parent's support is to show them that you're really serious. You say that you depend on them for money? Find a way to start earning a reasonable income for yourself -- if you aren't able to earn online yet, consider getting a job and work on IM in your spare time. If you're really lucky, your parents will be happy to support you while you work on building your IM business, but if not, the best way to show them that you're serious is to become more independent.

      Just my two cents.

Ok straight to the point... "Coaching program" - forget it.... learn from it, but the nurses down in cali. were getting $40K sign on bonuses" - Get your degree... work and make your $65K a year from nursing and then do IM secondly. 99.8% of people online don't make it... sorry just hardcore truth. I dont care what your "Coaching Program" is telling you.... use that as motivation... not reality. Im sure 100% of the people on this forum will agree with me.... dont belive me... start a thread and ask how many people are actually making a living online... you might be shocked. Ive seen people on this forum post that it took them 2 years to make their first $1 and ive watched people make a $1M in 4 hours.. so yes, dont let it ruin your hopes, but dont get cought up in the BS hype either... focus on maybe just $50 a day or $100 a day... thats still $1500/$3000 a month.. not bad for a hobby, ontop of your nursing.

I'm not entirely sure its a good idea for you to continue studying. I don't know a lot about nursing but from my own impression it seems like a pretty stressful and sometimes distressing environment to be in. I have a lot of respect for people in the medical profession but I don't envy them.

Maybe you should frame your decision to drop out as taking a break from your studies. If you explain your reasons including the stress you are under I'm sure your parents will understand. I'm not sure how the American College system works but you can probably cross credit the papers you have taken if you want to continue your education and change academic disciplines.

On another note I think it is really important to continue learning no matter what you do. A warrior shared a link for Udacity last week which is a new concept in open tertiary education. You can learn programming and its free. I'm currently taking the course on Python and its really impressive and I really like the idea of removing the price barrier to top quality education

You can check it out here: www.udacity.com

I'm going through a similar dilemma, but think I can offer you some advice.

I'm 23 and halfway through my business degree (finance and marketing) and I have lost my motivation to keep going. The reason? Because I fell in love with internet marketing. And more recently, CFD trading.

Now, here is the difference between you and I. I am making a large, consistent income stream from my internet marketing. Secondly, I am making money from trading (albeit an inconsistent income).

The two income streams will set me up for life. My grades started off great in my first year and a half of uni and then started to suffer as I ventured into other interests. I think I will still finish my degree one day. But for now, I can afford to take some time off from study. In fact, I still chose one subject to study this semester. I am learning Chinese. I took a break from the boring, usual subjects to do something practical and enjoyable. This is something that I will actually use one day.

Ok, my advice.. You cannot rely on money you think you will be making at a future time. IM is often unpredictable, things change very quickly. A couple of years ago I lost a $5k/week income overnight. These days, I have diversified in order to lower my risk. Therefore, you need a backup.

If you REALLY don't want to keep studying, take 6 months off. Forget about study. Support yourself with a part time job if you need it, and work HARD on your IM. If this is what you love, working hard on it will be easy. The profits will follow. BUT you should return to study when you are ready. Do it part time. Take your time. You are so close to finishing that you might as well finish it and keep it as an emergency backup in the future. I have two reliable income sources now but I will still complete my degree as a 3rd backup

Since you are only a few months away you should concentrate on school and finish it. Having a nursing degree can open doors in your IM career if you apply it properly. You can use your knowledge of nursing to build IM based sites and a degree with give you some sort of authority. If you would at the early stage of college it would be feasible to drop out. So late in the process you would be foolish to quit so close to goal. What kind of example are you setting for yourself by quitting an important project at 90%.

    Man up and step up.

Personally, I don't think you should drop out either.

You are too close to the finish.

IM is unpredictable and you are not earning yet. Maybe if you could support yourself, then it would make sense. But in this case you are still dependent on your parents. I know what its like to be filled with hype and seeing big money just around the corner. However a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Don't give up something solid to go chasing dreams and fantasies. Spend the rest of the year and finish your degree. Make positive steps to earning an income now. If you have cashflow then show that to your parents. If you don't then you seem crazy and they may kick you out and force you to get a minimum wage job.

The wise thing is to stay, stick it out. Get your degree. Do IM on the side. Get a job. Continue doing IM. When you can replace your income by IM and you have multiple streams of income then you can quit or drop out. Until then...Stay the course.

I agree with everyone that you should at least head to the finish line with your degree and do IM on the side until it makes money.

The best way to show that you can successfully earn with IM is to complete nursing school. Nothing is easy. I don't know whose coaching program you signed up for, but they are definitely a great salesperson. If you really need more time, then try going part time. It might extend your graduation date, but it is better than throwing everything away.

I come from a different perspective because I'm a blogger and not a marketer, but I recently left my career to write and blog full time. Part of me does regret the money I spent on 2 college degrees and the years I wasted in a career I hated. However, I DON'T regret having something to fall back on if the internet changes and blogging is no longer a lucrative field.

I'm reading a lot here about diversification and not putting all your eggs in one basket (which is why I'm reading up on marketing). If you can stand it, I think you'd be smart to finish school even if you never plan to use your degree.

@kardesh10 no one here can tell you what to do with your life and if that is the decision you have made I wish you every success.

One area of your post does concern me;Nursing school is just way too demanding and stressful. Unless you have a full system in place for your IM, I would expect the beginning of your career in IM to be stressful and demanding, especially considering you have to meet a quota (matching your current payments).

With that in mind I would explore with your coach your coping mechanisms you have in place for these stressful moments so you don't find yourself in a situation down the line where your back is against the wall and you're freaking out.

But part of being in business is taking calculated risks, so good luck to you.

      Hey,

Too many options and too many variables to ever give the right answer here.

The best guide is your own gut instinct. If your gut is telling you that to drop out is the right move and you are sure you will succeed, then fine, do it. If you have any doubts, then the answer is don't do it!

You are so close to the end of studies and this will give you a higher level of credibility throughout your life to stand by but again it is not the be all and end all. Confidence and self motivation will override qualifications in most cases ezpecially if you are planning a roue of self employment.

So, stand in front of the mirror and tell yourself you are doing the right thing then do it, whatever the answer, you need to know it deep inside because it is that belief which will keep you moving forward when the odds come stacking against you from time to time.

Best luck whatever you decide.would also say that you shouldn't drop out of college man... it's always good to see things through to completion once you've started on something.... and since December is only a matter of months, it's better that you get a degree while continuing to learn Internet Marketing thing on the side...

Many people have backup careers...just in case. Nursing would be yours. Barbering might be someone else's. I know several people who consider their specialized education as a safety net.

I could have used a backup education several years ago when my business (irreplaceable products) burned to the ground and my skill set didn't quite match anything on the market. It was a prolonged rough patch, including several failed start-up projects. IM was not on the horizon at the time, and it was the corporate world that bailed me out.

Best of luck to you in whatever you do.

    You can do it.

I was attending one of the best universities in the whole world in IT/engineering.

Currently I paused after finishing the 2nd year and I'm 8 months through the "paused" year. And guess how much money I'm making. More than the average doctor probably, working much less and sitting in front of a computer.

Eras change, and today's the world of Internet and computer.

Just do what you like but be prepared to stay at it 16 hours a day until it works. That's what I did for months.

Your situation is very similar to mine, I really have no intention of working hard in a job for the next 40 years, that's why I have decided to stop my education as well.. for good!

Nonetheless, the business & IM world is very uncertain, I'm speaking from my real personal experience, I started IM 2 years ago and really wanted to make it big or at least able to support myself and not rely on my family within the next 6 - 12 months.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to.. I failed many times.. I invested lots of money on IM products and information but those money invested didn't seem to come back at all.. There were many many many times during my IM journey where I really wanted to give up.. I thought to myself, I might as well go back to school or at least find a stable job... at least that could have brought in some money every month consistently.

The purpose of me telling you all of these is NOT to bring you down, demoralize you or whatever S*** thing.. that's NEVER my intention, however I just want you to realize that IM is really a business (just like any brick and mortar business out there), it require time, action, consistence, money, effort etc.. in order for any business to succeed, it's not a get-rich-quick scheme.

There's really NO certainty in the business world.. you are able to make money this month, but that doesn't mean you'll make the same amount of money the next month..

Just a headsup! I just want you to be better prepared on what's ahead of you.. It's really a big thing, because your success in business/IM will determine your future and career. If you fail, you will either go back to school or start going to the working society (I assume), which I don't think you ever want!

I really want you to be successful, because being successful in business means you have the freedom to spend times with your love ones, your future kids, whatever you love doing etc..

If you forget whatever I say in this post is fine but just remember this 2 things:

    1) "Do it (your IM business) for the Lord our God"
    2) "Don't you ever ever ever ever ever give up"

Also remember to take consistent actions and learn from your mistakes along the way.. I'm looking forward to hear your success stories!

    God bless you,
    Jeremiah

P.S. Luckily for me, finally after 2 years in the IM world, which is just a month ago I begin to make some money.. although it's not a lot of money but at least I'm able to support myself, able to tithe, able to give a little to my parents, and re-invest a little back to my business.. So please don't give up!

P.S.S. With God all things are possible!

If it's not very difficult you should probably graduate from college, not much long to go till December if you think about it. Having a degree is a long-term benefit which I do confirm, while the desire to make money now and quick is much more a short-tem benefit.

    Stay in school.
Once you graduate - Start your IM career.

IM is also fast paced and stressful. In most cases you need a capital to start of to create web sites / sales pages / pay for PPC etc.
So, again, stay in school, so if anything you got something to fall back on if anything.
