These Seem to be the 'rules of driving traffic'

What's the focus/things to watch for/rules/goals of getting good at driving traffic?

(If you say 'money', you're not listening... That's like saying 'the focus of math is the answer 4'. It's not what's being asked)

What are the patterns/rules/heuristics/whatever?

Here's what they *seem* to be--and I KNOW I'm wrong, that's why I'm asking!

1. There are two routes you can take: Quantity or Quality.

2. Driving Traffic is/starts out as teeny tiny You VS. the very big "Machine" of anti-spam, Google, competition, Can-spam, etc etc etc etc etc

3. Any "Quality" method that is not "I just spent 436 hours on this and I made negative $80, not counting hourly rates" is vastly overused by your competition

4. Any "Quantity" method you can do is illegal either nationally or on that specific system, or expensive to the point of not having any sort of profit margin due to Rule 5 and Rule 7.

5. Any time you find a method does work, it will only work for a very, very, very short time before it is either completely flooded by competition or changed (usually by Google) to not work anymore.

6. The two routes you can use to find out non-saturated, non-illegal methods of traffic are "Edison" and "Lucky Charismatic". The Edison method is to have the resources (either time or money) to try everything until you find something that works, and the Lucky Charismatic is someone that happens to know someone personally that uses the Edison method and caught something useful.

7. The first problem with the Edison method is it is vastly inefficient/resource draining because you're spending most of your time/money in stuff that is already Rule 5.

8. The second problem with the Edison method is that if you test too hard and you screw up, it messes with your ability to test anything else.

9. The problem with the Lucky Charismatic is if you don't already know anyone, you have to use the Edison method to get to know them... which puts you right back in the loop of number 7 and 8.

10. If you use the Edison method and get lucky once, people will let you be Lucky Charismatic to them, and you can keep Edison testing on larger and larger projects, snowballing yourself into more and more good methods--but only if you hit a 'gold' method on your own first. (this is generally how people become 'successful')

(for clarity of what I'm looking for, here's my 'Viola' rules' (it's a large violin)--These rules work great!)

1. Know your scale finger patterns.
2. No song is too hard, no matter how crazy looking. Start at the beginning of the song and learn each measure until you can play it right. Then move on to the next one. Then string them together
3. Practice like you're competing against violinists, compete against violists.
4. In competitions, know your song to death and pick a song the judges don't know.
5. If you are truly 100% stuck on a song, find somewhere to listen to the part so you know what you're up against.
