Do you live each day as if it were your last?

Do you live each day as if it were your last?
Do you ever wonder that each day COULD be your last?

This is not meant to be depressing in any way. It's just that most people here (myself included) focus on long term goals and are set on working their asses off to get there.
While I think that's a very healthy mentality, I'm also wondering how living in and appreciating the here and now is important for happiness and peace of mind.

Save for long term goals, do we often enough stop and wonder what we could do to make the present worthwhile? And would this be beneficial in achieving your goals somehow?

Put bluntly: would it be wise to live everyday as if it was your last? Would it help you to focus on what's really important? And would you live your life differently if you lived it like that? (It definitely has been the case for me. I find that answering the question: 'what would you do if this was your last day?' really creates perspective and forces you to do things you think are valuable.)

i have been thinking about something along these lines ..but it can't be aproached like this yolo( you only live once) trend thar is going on..

live every day like it will be your last but doon't do anything that will make it your lst.. or reduce the number of days you have ahead of you

Of course it would, but we always get back to our cultural reality. In our society we aren't programmed to live like that. It sure would be a challenge to live that way-for me I'd do a lot less procrastinating.

I don't actually, and never agreed with the philosophy. People who live like each day is their last live like they have nothing to lose. People with nothing to lose make a lot more mistakes. I'd much rather stay the course, and let everything else handle itself. Heck, when you do die everything else is over anyways, so let it be.

      I agree Joe.

I couldn't possibly live each day as if it were my last because I'd cram in all of the places to go and things to do as quickly as I could and then there'd be nothing left to look forward to as my life dragged on. :p

But seriously, how can one live like that and wisely plan for the future, make goals, or care about anyone else? Seems to me living each day as though it were your last would sort of create a selfish "all about me" mentality. That is no way to be successful in any facet of one's life, in my opinion anyway.

If today was my last day There are many things I would do differently. I wouldn't do my painful physio, I wouldn't wash the dishes, I would eat a large box of chocolates, I would sped all the money in my bank for a nice restaurant meal (as opposed to leaving it there for my bills).

You don't need to "live every day as if it is your last" in order to appreciate what you have now. That is the point of work - life balance. It is not wise for focus on either of those exclusively.

^^This (and what you said too Terra). If I lived every day like it was my last, I wouldn't have much money in the bank account at all.

I always live like today could be my last. I don't like to plan events far in the future for this reason. Sometimes it's scary to feel this way because there's so much I need and want to do in my life that I can't do and if something strange happens then it will be too late. I guess by that point it doesn't matter since I'll be gone. The double edge sword...

I live life as it comes, one step at the time.

I do not stress myself out about the future. I take things slowly. It works best for me.

One day's problems is enough for me to worry about the following day.

Let each day bring its own worries.

I Agree. I think it's challenging to live this way because a lot of us think that tomorrow is promised...but it is not.

We all know that. But we also need to act on it.

This is a challenge that I want to try to tackle. Living EVERYDAY as it if it was my last.

I imagine that one my last day I would want to be in a state of gratefulness. Thankful for the full life that I had lead and the wonderful relationships that I had. Thankful that my family knew that I cared for them because I showed them love everyday. Since I try to live each day in a constant state of gratitude and love, thankful for each moment that life has to offer me, then I do believe that I live each day as if it were my last.

I don't but I'd like to. Unfortunately, I think most people don't because we're spending so much time working to get to that "dream". Meanwhile, it does not even have to cost much or anything for that matter to treat each day as if it were your last.

I think if we live our life like it is the last day, we become reckless, irresponsible, indulgent, selfish and have no plan for the future. I think its important to realize that we have many years here and that it is crucial to plan for the future instead of living for the moment....

Remember life is one and only one. So enjoy it at its best. Sometimes you should consider it as it is your last day to motivate your performance. But I personally don’t do it much often, instead I do it before some very important event where I need to perform better. It really works as an inspiration because everyone wants to live so he or she naturally wants to fulfill all the wishes of life. Nothing can be more enjoyable than achieving some success in life.

That mindset of living each day as if it were your last only works in some areas.

Like if you're thinking of approaching that person, yea.

But when figuring out what to talk about, no.

When thinking of getting up early to see the sunrise, yes.

When thinking of getting plowed UNTIL sunrise, no.

When telling your partner you love them, yes.

When telling someone you just met you love them to get into their pants, no.

When savoring every bite of your meal, yes.

When stuffing yourself silly because it's your last meal, no.

      Appreciating your income, yes.

      Spending ALL your money, no.

Living each day as if it were their last is for fools.

Live each day as if you're going to wake up tomorrow and have to live with the decisions you made today.

Great comment. I believe focusing on the here and now, (your present moment in time) is very very important. this is a great point you bring up. When you focus on the "now" you give power to that exact moment and you tend to forget about the problems you may be having in other areas.

When you live each day as if it were your last, you will automatically feel better yourself, and we all know that how we feel on a daily basis attracts what we get in life. It's no so much what we say, as much as what we FEEL. So......if you enjoy everyday to the max, you will feel better, and there fore you will attract better results in your life. Great point.

I prefer to take things slowly and treat each day as I would have treated any day. It works for me. I am happy with where I am now and I don't want to pressure myself.

  • No, I have many mouths to feed.

If it were my last day, we wouldn't care about all that.

But since it's not, hopefully, I'm working.
